Title: DVD-collections and wishes
Post by: Blueberry on June 09, 2004, 05:44:51 AM
Just wondering..

Which are the best 3 non-Leone movies in your personal DVD collection?

And which 3 is on top of your personal wish list (you know, when we get the money...)?

The first question I can't answer myself since all I've got is Leone and a couple of Carpenter flicks - and the Magnificent 7.

My personal wish list:

1. Fitzcarraldo (Herzog)
2. Godfather Box
3. Blade Runner de Lux-edition

Looking forward to be inspired!!

Blueberry, you need some Kubrick and Scorsese in your collection.  They hold up to repeated viewings.

Michael Mann never gets boring either - "Thief" and "Last of the Mohicans" are my favorites.  Last of the Mohicans has a great soundtrack, really nice marriage of image and music similar to Leone.  Thief I love because its his first movie and shot on location in early 1980's Chicago, very gritty - James Caan was really good in this movie.

Fave DVD's would be:

 1. Raging Bull ( I agree General, every collection must contain Scorsese)

2. Fargo

3. Cinema Paradiso (Directors cut)

A wish would be for MGM to release a three disc box set of James Cagney's Angels With Dirty Faces, White Heat and The Public Enemy.

Wants:

Bladerunner would be good. maybe the 1982/1992 cuts in a those branching DVDs
like last years version of Ridley's A L I E N.
Theres suppose to be alot of Producer/Director bad blood, with Licence of Bladerunner concerning the Original/Director's Cut. Which is why it hasn't had its DVD special edition treatment as yet. Alot of stuff has been done Ridleys been looking a prints back in 2002. extras are done (Inc Mark Kermode's 2001 Channel 4 Doc 'On the Edge of Blade Runner' worthy on its own)... but its dead in the water. and Warner are very hush.. hush.. about details.

Wouldnt mind that Aki Kaurismaki Japanese Boxset. Not a cheap thing thou.

Decent copy of Robert Frank's Stones film C%$ksucker Blues. But this will never happen. Have to make do with Dodgey bootleg VHS transfers.  :P

I didn't care for the "Director's Cut" of BLADE RUNNER.  I liked the Director's Cut ending better, with the film ending on the elevators closing instead of them driving away and Decker saying the girl wasn't built to die early like the other replicant.  However, I thought the voice over added to the film and was a nice nod to the movie's film noir feel.  And that unicorn was STUUUUUUPID.

Favorite non-Leone DVDs are:
1.  Brazil (Criterion Collection)
2.  The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus Collection
3.  True Romance - Director's Cut (this Scott brother knows how to make a director's cut, adding more kickass action and no stupid unicorns)

General - you're right but I've seen the Scorsese and Kubrick films so many times already... in film clubs, on tv, rentals...etc.

I just mean, if one had just enough money to buy three DVDs and couldn't buy any other for a whole year, what would they be?

I haven't seen Malicks Badlands for 16 years or so, I have good memories of it though - I want it!! And I want Millers Crossing and Blood Simple in a decent version.

And by the way - yesterday my very limited collection got company by the restored version of Hitchcock's Vertigo - looking forward to seeing it.

Shorty - are those the best (non-Leones) in your collection or the ones you want really bad?

I got that Pixies DVD about a month ago. very good. European tour footage, Debaser video... nice 4ADD menus that morph the bands faces.

My wish list (of fictive dvds):

A special Edition of Blade Runner would be nice, with both the cuts on it.

A special Edition of Apocalypse Now, with the original version and the redux on it.  Personally I didn't really care for the extra scenes added to the redux.  It was a great movie as it was.

Kill Bill-the complete film

Top 3 in random order:
The Great Escape (though lousy extras)
The Godfather Trilogy
Back to the Future Trilogy

Don't know if I could narrow down my top 3 non-Leone films, but I'd say my favourite film of all time is Kurosawa's Ikiru. I rate all Kurosawa's films highly. My favourite non-Leone spaghetti is Keoma. Other favourite films of mine include The Wicker Man, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Mad Max 2, Nosferatu, Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, Lady Snowblood and the Lone Wolf and Cub films. And of course Kill Bill, but since everyone likes that at the moment, I don't like to go on about it.

As for DVD wants well, at the moment I'm getting into Italian neo-Realism and German Expressionism. So my top 3 wishlist would be...

1. M
2. Ladri di biciclette
3. The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari

Tough to narrow it down to three, but I would have to say...

Chinatown
Sweet Smell of Success
Blade Runner

And special mention to Punch Drunk Love, Apocalypse Now (original cut) Goodfellas and Raging Bull...

 8) DVD!!! I have many! region 1! uncut! collector's editions.... blah blah blah. there are a few more of my favourite movies of all time that are still to recieve the 'special edition' treatments they deserve:

MAD MAX 2: THE ROAD WARRIOR

FACE/OFF

BATMAN (1989)

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (CRUISE)

HEAT (I think this is coming soon...)

LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL ( I have the uncut Euro-version but there is room for improvement)

SOUTHERN COMFORT

BLADE RUNNER (the works!)

yes, if God were to bless my collection with these classics with directors' commentaries, trailers, teasers, etc. my life would be complete (man! I need some sleep!)

My No. one DVD wish, would be to own GREED. A 1923 movie directed by ERICH VON STROHEIM. I have seen a version of it, and it has one of the most stunning endings I've ever seen. But the version on release has been chopped to hell. The remaining scenes are, rumored to be buried in the vaults of, whats left of the MGM studios! :-\
Number two would have to be the BURT LANCASTER starrer ULZANA'S RAID. Again, I've seen a version of it and again the cut scenes are buried by UNIVERSAL or somebody else.  :'(
Number three. Well, number 3 would have to be the still lost but shot sequences in OUATITW. I.E. where Bronson is beaten up by the sheriff.
If I had a 4th, it would have to be all the movies I love with all the scenes intact as they were shot originally by the directors! :'( :'( :'(

This is always so hard, especially if Leone doesn't count.

Favorites:
1. Cinema Paradiso (Directors Cut)
2. The Adventures Of Robin Hood
3. The Deer Hunter

There are so many new/restored releases and old treasures that I want to get so listing a top three is impossible.  :-\
