I'm riffling through Vincenzoni's book of memories Pane e cinema (Bread and Cinema), published some years ago. It is full of anecdotes but it tells little about Leone. An interesting episode is the one about his relationship with Anthony Quinn, for whom he had written Barabbas. He met the actor in NY after the american release of FFDM and asked him how he liked it. Quinn, much in his cups, began insulting him because he hadn't suggested to Leone his name for Volontè's part. He answered he had no power about the casting (well, a much easier answer could have been that Leone couldn't afford Quinn) and that ended the matter. Some time later Quinn (hired for another film in which Vincenzoni was involved) recalled the episode and, excusing himself, admitted he wasn't sure he could play that character as good as V. I think he was right.

Interesting. He probably couldn't.

Also agree.

IMO, Indio in FAFDM is the greatest villain ever in a Western.
The Ramon character is also awesome -- and perhaps it's my second-greatest Western villain -- but the Indio character is better (though that may be more due to the script).
Heck, it may be the greatest villain in any movie ever. Off the top of my head, the only ones that rival him are Hannibal Lecter and Dr. Evil.

I agree. My boss was definitely the most memorable villain and no one could have played him like Gian Maria.

IMO, Indio in FAFDM is the greatest villain ever in a Western.
I also count Palance in Shane. Or Fonda in OUTW.

There were so many incredible villains in westerns. A lot I found more fascinating than Volonte as Indio. (Who was very good in FaFDM and only Ok in FoD)
Van Cleef and Fonda in the next 2 Leones of course
Palance in Shane, yes also
Wolff in God Forgives I Don't
Johm McIntire in The Far Country
Richard Widmark in Yellow Sky and The Law and Jake Wade
Kinski in Il grande Silenzio
Dan Dureya in Winchester 73
Richard Brooks in Hombre
etc, etc ...
