Title: New Restoration?
Post by: dave jenkins on May 17, 2014, 04:49:09 PM
Is there a new restoration of his playing at Cannes?
http://www.cinetecadibologna.it/news/n_150
Here's the relevant passage:
Quote
Venerdì 16 maggio, ore 21.30, Cinéma de la plage
FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (Per qualche dollaro in più, 1965) di Sergio Leone
Restauro realizzato al laboratorio L’Immagine Ritrovata da Cineteca di Bologna, Leone Film Group. Si ringrazia Alberto Grimaldi

Yes it's a new restauration. Hence the restaured outakes.

That's the question!
Is this the answer?

Per un pugno di dollari: Cineteca di Bologna, Unidis Jolly Film, The Film Foundation, Hollywood Foreign Press Association;

Well, don't tease us Mike! :) What did he think? Did it have the extra bits and pieces like the beating scene intact?

Here is the text of that tweet by Kino Lorber:

Coming in 2018!
Brand New 4K Master!
Sergio Leone's For a Few Dollars More - Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Gian Maria Volonte, Klaus Kinski

We have already discussed the awful piss "restoration" of GBU. And there was a piss "restoration" at Cannes several years ago of FOD, and it seems that is going to be released on disc now by KL http://www.fistful-of-leone.com/forums/index.php?topic=13018.0

Did we ever clarify if there was also a Cannes piss "restoration" of FAFDM?  There was some confusion about it earlier in this thread.

Anyway, as noted in the thread I just linked to in the first paragraph of this post, it seems that the new FOD disc is going to be the 2014 restoration, but this new FAFDM disc will be a new restoration. So hopefully the FAFDM will not involve piss.  Of course, if you all who are in contact with KL on their message boards want to start harassing them now about it - to make sure they do not follow the piss pallette - maybe that would be productive  O0 O0

Anyway, I'm not dying for a new version of FAFDM. The MGM BRD of FAFDM looks nice and has great bonus features. Some people prefer the Mondo, though that does not have English audio.

If you forced me to name my single-favorite movie of all time, it would be FAFDM. And I'd be happy to watch that MGM disc for the rest of my life :)

Which may not be all that long. Be careful what you wish for. >:D

If I remember correctly, the MGM release of FAFDM was actually the only one presented really well in their original BD box set.

It appears that although they marketed the 2014 Italian release as a restoration of the trilogy, they only did 4k scans of FOD and GBU (and made them both green/yellow). It looks like from the stills on this page linked below that they used the old scan of FAFDM.

Currently the only way to get this movie uncut is to buy the German version, the Italian version is still cut by a few seconds during the beating scene. The German version uses some poorer quality materials to fill in the missing material, but at least it's complete.

For some reason I was under the impression the German BD looked better than the US.
I just realized it's not true...at least not on my set-up.

So I just re-watched the US BD and there is a crude edit between the beating and Indio's following dialogue.
I gotta put the German version on and see if this is where the footage was cut.
I wonder if it was some absurd ruling where 1o seconds of violence was permitted but not a second more?

Also, concerning the thunderclap, with Manco's introduction... both have it mistimed.
However, the US version was much closer than the German release which helped in my decision on what disc to watch.
The German release wasn't even close
I noticed the problem lies with a break in the music during Manco's entrance.
I hope Kino has this fixed but I won't get my hopes up since their releases have been less than stellar lately.
