Title: Mad Men
Post by: Cusser on May 19, 2015, 11:03:01 AM
Anybody watch Mad Men?  I saw the series finale of "Mad Men" last night.  The ending was quite reminiscent of the end of Once Upon a Time in America, with close up of Don Draper and Don breaking into a Noodles Aronson smile, to show that Draper was finally happy.  I'd call it a Leone homage or copy, for sure.

Was he smoking opium?

From what I heard, he was at a bus stop. It's more of an self-identity ending than a "living in the past" one but I definitely want to see the final scene.

(I never really watched Madmen, seems to be high quality, ambitious (in a good way) and boring stuff)

Yes - totally! I thought exactly the same thing! Even down to the way he smiled.

Was he smoking opium?

Ha, no. However the ending was ambiguous as it arguably is in OUTIA.

SPOILER ALERT.

Did Don Draper return to McCann and create the very famous and very real "Hilltop" commercial for Coca-Cola or did he "retire" as he claimed he was doing? Personally I favor the former interpretation.

From what I heard, he was at a bus stop.

Huh  ??? - you heard wrong!

No Draper wasn't at a bus stop at the end, nor was he smoking opium.

I thought Draper was going to come up with the term Lite beer for Miller's diet beer they talked about a few weeks ago...

It is high quality, ambitious (in a good way) and very entertaining stuff.

But the 6th season, which I finished a few weeks ago, was less good. Still on a high level compared to most other series this season was less inspired and gave me the feeling of repetition and standstill. Similar tot the 5th seasonof the Sopranos.
I hope that the split 7th season comes back to form. When it ends on the high level of the first seasons Mad Men can become the greatest of the new millennium series.
