I love running out and buying SPAGHETTI WESTERNS reccomended on this site. Most of them are well accounted for in books etc. I.E. THE BIG GUNDOWN, THE HILLS RUN RED etc. Are there any sneaky classics out there? One's viewed by site members that never come up in discussion? One that invokes a fond memory?
I'll kick it off with a movie I saw in the mid sixties called MINNESOTA CLAY, a SERGIO CORBUCCI flick. As a kid, I found it STUNNING, but that was a long time ago. Come to think of it, around the same time I found NORMAN WISDOM movies to be STUNNING! Ah, time is a strange thing. So, if there are any of those forgotten spaghetti's out there.....bring em' on! ::)

God's Gun is a fairly overlooked SW, especially considering it stars Lee Van Cleef and Jack Palance. It's by the same Director as Sabata, but is much better, albeit much less well known
-
I think most non-leone spaghettis are rightly forgotten, lol!! ;D
-
Well, until I got my restoration copy "La Resa de Conti", the "Big Gundown", would have been my choice for this topic espcially here in North America. (I think FOD fits that description now.)
TBG, Its like having Leone's "6th" western. lol.

There's plenty of good "forgotton" non-Leone spaghetti's. A good one with Lee Van Cleef that you can find fairly cheap is "Beyond The Law". I found it on a collection that included "Death Rides a Horse" (pretty cool), "God's Gun" (pretty weak I thought :)) and "Boot Hill" (unwatchable, but would like to see a restored version). "Death Rides a Horse" is the one you hear about the most, but I actually prefered "Beyond The Law". It was fun.
Another somewhat forgotten spag. is "Hellbenders". I got it on another cheap 10-movie brentwood collection. It's a fun film with a great Morricone score.

My local store has an old VHS copy of ACE HIGH (1968) starring TUCO himself, ELI WALLACH.
Anybody seen it?

Have just watch two spaghetti westerns back to back. The first was A REASON TO LIVE, A REASON TO DIE (1974) with JAMES COBURN. No classic but very watchable.
The second was DEAF SMITH, JOHNNY EARS (1973). An undiluted pile of crap with ANTHONY ZORBA QUINN! Save your hard earned cash. I'm thinking of suing the producers to get my money back. I've always thought BAD MAN'S RIVER with LEE VAN CLEEF was dire until this. In comparison, BAD MAN'S RIVER is a twelve OSCAR winning masterpiece!

I picked up God's Gun from the local 99cent store and I must say I want my $1 and 90 minutes back. ;D What a load of crap, not even Lee Van Cleef could save that movie. The worst acting, directing, and photography I've ever ever seen.

Lol, boy I know there is a lot of crap out there. Captian Apache was another winner, LVC even sings on it.
He must have been having a ball making these low budget films and living high on the hog in Europe, beats being flung upon the waste heap of old bypassed hollywood actors.

Captain Apache.....my God.....pile of crap. And that song.....AAAgggghhhh! Hell on earth! Was given a VHS version of it many years ago by a family member who knew I loved LEE VAN CLEEF! That family member is now out of my will! >:( >:( >:(

I couldnt agree more. With the widescreen english resto project and possibly the best score of any spag !

Forgot to mention Face to Face. Faccia a Faccia in italian with Volante and Millian. I have yet to see it but it sems to rate pretty highly. Anyone ??
-
Well, all I can say is that I'm on a quest for the rest of Sollima's spaghetti's after reaquainting myself with "The Big Gundown".
-
Have you guys heard the song The Grand Duel on the Kill Bill Vol 1 soundtrack? Is that from the Big Gundown?

No its from "The Grand Duel" I believe, never seen it but its part of a LVC Collection DVD from Japan I believe with "The Big Gundown", "Death Rides a Horse", and "The Grand Duel"
-
Face to Face...yes i would recommend this. One of the better ones. Also try Requiscant.
Has anyone got the email address for ordering the Big Gundown restoration.

Email FrancoCleef:

Many thanks Cigar Joe. I am going to email him straight away.

Just watched an old VHS version of A TOWN CALLED BASTARD. Pretty poor. According to FRAYLING, the story was derived from SERGIO CORBUCCI and GRAHAM GREENE!!!!! A TOWN CALLED BOLLIX might be more apt! :'(
-
Yeah, I've got a version of that on the 10 movie brentwood collection that has "Hellbenders" on it. On there, it's called "A Town Called Hell". It's a really crappy transfer, but the movie's so bad I don't think it really matters. :P

If you're into the comedies, I'd recommend Buddy Goes West with Bud Spencer. I enjoyed it as much as the Trinity films, and it was actually made as late as 1981. Sergio Donati co-wrote, and it's basically about Bud Spencer walking around beating people up. What separates this from other Spencer vehicles, is his crazy Indian sidekick. Lots of slapstick, and actually pretty amusing.
-
Theres a lot of good ones, Face to Face, Companeros, Buddy Goes West , all with Morricone scores to boost the the effect ! Unfortunately Buddy was his last western score.
Cleef in the Sabata's, but are these choices forgotten enough ?
