An interesting question, Gladiator was very good, Leone might have done it better, the recent Gangs of New York also may have been done better, perhaps Leone might have tackled a SiFi flick, they are similar in structure to westerns. I'll ponder this some more and post again...

You're probably right, Gangs of New York would have been something for Leone...

SciFi, interesting...  Imagine him making the new Star Wars-flicks...  mmmm.

It's hard to say, because there are few films today that are so intense and serious like Once Upon a Time in America was...  And if he would have lived, would he be making the same kind of serious pictures?  Or something more light-footed, like the Dollars-trilogy? ???

I heard somewhere that the script of the Godfather was proposed to Leone before Coppola.

Leone didn't accept to to this film in order to make a most personal one, OUTA.

Been thinking more on this and maybe a detective film might have been a good one for him to try. The dectetives like Marlow, and Archer were loners similar to the man with no name playing the cops and the bad guys against the middle.

I heard that one too.  Anyway I think The Godfather is a very good movie, made by Leone or not.  I would consider it a better movie than Once Upon a Time in America (sorry guys).  Is there going to be a fourth one, because I heard there were plans to do so...?

There's a project indee, based on an other Puzzo's story.

But the fourth part would tell the "adventures" of young Sony Corleone (the caracter played by James Caan).

I saw Andy Garcia's last performances (Ocean's eleven for example) and I think he is really mature for the godfather role.

I can't agree with you, Il Buono, Godfather is an excellent movie (specially the first one) but it has nothing to do with OUTA.

I would have wanted to see his project about the siege of Leningrad, would have been much better than "Enenmy At The Gates", although I liked that film as well.

i think Leone would have made a good comedy director.Look at the Dollars films, there are loads of laugh-out-loud moments. And the first half of Fistful Of Dynamite.

As for excisting films,it is very difficult.I suppose Saving Private Ryan.It was good and Ilike Spielberg but Leone would have made it better.

I don't forget that Sergio is Italian and so in a particuliar feeling with Italian-American Directors: Scorcese, Cimino,
Ferrara
The Godfather ? indeed !  but also ....Funerals, Year of the Dragoon, Deer Hunter, King of New york.

Obviously I strongly regret that he never could realize the Leningrad project .

He was a great battle Director before Western

Among all the films you mentioned, the idea to have him direct 'The deer hunter' seems brilliant to me.
Of course I love Cimino's movie, but somehow I feel that Sergio could have rendered DeNiro's and Walken's characters even better.

Thanks guybrush,  when Il Buono will open a New Topic "wich are the actors able to enter the Leone world" we could answer "Chris Walken".
I suddenly realize that Chris played also in "Funerals" and " King of New York"  ;)

Miller's crossing ( Cohen brothers) ?  Some scenes in the wood , the guy dying and still shooting with his machine-gun
the infinite sadness of  the heroe.

ditto aaronson.

when johny casper sends  tom, frankie and tic-tac out into the woods in search for bernie burnbeaum's body
frankie starts singing what sounds like a beautiful itialian lullaby.

again when casper's hitmen are coming up the stairs to get leo. leo, listening to an opera, calmly puts his cigar down and reaches for his revolver. he then picks up the still lit cigar and slowly walks down the street pursuing the hitmen in their car while his opera is playing finishing car and fleeing hitmen off.
this film has that dreamlike leone-esque feeling.
eddie dane/j.e. freeman has that same angel eyes like evil to his character.  i'm going to put you in a deep dark place and i am going to enjoy doing it"
jon polito did a superb job in miller's crossing.
"one in the back and one in the brain
show us you're one of the good guys"

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.  I can't hope to really do it justice here so I hope some of you have read it.  It's like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly with a strong dash of The Lord of the Rings--that's the feeling, anyway.  It's a seven-volume, 4500 page story and I think Leone was the only director who could realize the SCOPE of the thing, and was both skilled and ambitious enough.  And, of course, Morricone would have to score it, and while I'm fantisizing, let's put  a late-1970s Clint Eastwood in the lead role as Roland, the protagonist.  Gives me goosbumps.

An adaptation of the famous Japanese films: Ogami Itto , "the wolf with a kid " from a manga

There are 8 or 9 colored, violent  films . The second one is the best .

The heroe is alone , victim of an unfairy plot, beginning a killer , paid for fight .

I'm assuming you mean the series of films that was called 'Lone Wolf And Cub'in England,if so,YES,very good films, and Sergio would have been perfect! The 'hero' in these films is very much like The Man With No Name, really more of an anti-hero.

I would have liked to have seen his interpretation of The Godfather (4+ hours for certain), but there's no way it could have been any better.

I have read that Leone really wanted to do a remake of Gone With The Wind. I cannot fathom how that would've turned out.

Enzo G. Castellari's 1973 epic police crime drama film La polizia incrimina la legge assolve aka High Crime. Even though he did an outstanding job (Italy's answer to The French Connection that completely destroys it), I can't imagine what Leone could have created....

How about Lost In la Mancha. (Although i still would like to see what would have become of the film had Gilliam completed it).
Or the usual suspects...I can picture it now.

A war film by Leone would've been very interesting.

He was planning a Leningrad-World War II-film as he died in 1989. It would've been a great film!

But "Gangs of New York" by Leone would've been great, too!

John Boorman's Hell in the Pacific would have been great in Leone's hands. It's very, very slow almost nothing happens the whole film and there are only two actors, but the film is fun to watch due to great cinematography and would fit perfectly to Leone's style: Two men marooned on an island, manipulating and irritating eachother and trying to kill each other off. And I think that Morricone's score for A Fistful of Dynamite would fit this film as well, better than Lalo Schifrin's rather empty score. I don't know if you agree or if you've seen this movie. If you have tell me what you think.  ::)

Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, just think he would have taken the sentimentality that ruined it away.............  also would have died to have seen OUATICUBA, (Is it true that he was thinking about a Film about "Che"?).

Most of the flicks I could see him doing his influence is obvious in, including the two Godfathers.   He would have improved anything.

I would have liked to see him tackle a martial arts flick, a crime noire, and a Raymond Chandler adaptation.

Zorro, obviously, too.

Well he did peplum, westerns, gangster.....would love to have seen him tackle World War 1 story. For movie already made it would have to be a detective, CHINATOWN or FAREWELL MY LOVELY. It would have bin' interesting to see what he would have come up with but sadly.....we'll never know!

A Bond film.

For instance, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (with Connery and Bardot instead of Lazenby and Rigg. But that's just my personal preference...)

On a related note (and not to denigrate the great John Barry) it would be fascinating to hear how Morricone would have handled a Bond soundtrack.

i don't know about genres... i mean he already made the best western, war, and gangster films of all time... i guess a modern day crime or noir film would be next, I think if he did a horror/thriller it would have been amazing.

What would i have liked to see directed by leone of existing movies? how about everything done after 1970...haha...
...but If i had to pick one existing movie for him to direct it would be CONAN THE BARBARIAN... the movie and score are near perfection as is and one of my top 10 favorite movies... but i couldn't imagine how amazing it would have been with leone and morricone... although milius and basil p. did an amazing job anyhow.

Being new to westerns and having only watched The Magnificent Seven once,  and even though I think it is a good film, I wish so badly Leone had directed it that I get frusrated when I think about how he didn't. Imagine how excellent the story would have been in Leone's Dollars style? That is something I would love to see.

I wonder if he ever wanted to do this one at any point? Especially being a fan of Kurosawa.

p.s. - I also think he would have made an excellent Lawrence of Arabia. Many other films too I guess.

I agree, as the public, we really got screwed, all the publicity at the time went to Clint and Sergio got left at the wayside.

If he would have gotten the same publicity that say Tarantino gets today, Leone would have been flooded with scripts no doubt, whether or not he would have done any is another question altogether.

One of Leone's collaborators, I can't remember who, said that during the 13 hiatus between Duck You Sucker and Once Upon A Time In America was trying to urge him to make a smaller in scope film a Film Noir, but it obviously never happened, but it would have been nice to see what he would have done with a Noir.
