Title: IMDb discontinuing its message boards
Post by: cigar joe on February 03, 2017, 02:21:07 PM
Just got this in the header over at IMDb

IMPORTANT: IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Although there is a case to be said that some of the boards were useful in actual discussion (I haven't seen any but is the evidence of absence the absence of evidence?). From what I have seen, it always looked like a cesspool of people calling each other idiots.

That's the new culture brought to us by the internet.

Does anyone remember the troll JohnTexasBapster from the western boards? He would start every message with something like "Verily I say unto thee".

Those boards have been a mess for over a decade but there can be some useful information posted from there. CJ has quoted some good stuff over the years.

I always found it incredible how IMDb took the place of what at least in terms of "American releases" should have been the domain of the AFI Catalog. I mean, how many people actually go to the AFI Catalog to get information on an American film before IMDb?
Title: Re: IMDb discontinuing it's message boards

I think this is a weird decision. The most noticeable parts of the message boards are idiot trolls who's stupidity makes three stand out, but 80% of them are pretty legit comments and discussions from both normal movie goers and cinephiles.. And for popular films they are very active.

I never posted more than 10 times in over.l decade, but I often read posts after I watch a movie to hear other people's perspectives and learn interesting facts.

Not sure why they're getting rid of this. I won't really miss them, but I'm sure many will

I understand a lot of people like 'em, but I think from the 15 times altogether so far I searched for something on those boards, I found something useful maybe 2 times.

What about all the message boards that have been there until now? Will IMDB archive the stuff that is already there? Or will they delete it?

Well it's going to bring some new discussion, I'm already getting PMed from folks worried about reviews being spammed on Western indexes, lol. It's definitely getting reactions.

The thing to do is discuss the new reviews and the points being brought up in them.  O0

My advice is not to post that much rewiews in such a short time span. At least not if he wants others to read them, or maybe even discuss them. I already stopped reading most of them, cause It is too much.

Spikeopath post them by and by, but maybe not more than one per day.

I pretty much told him the same thing, it's running me ragged trying to add them all to the indexes, where he can copy and paste, it takes me 4-5 minutes a piece putting them in the indexes and making sure they work.  ;)

Post by: drinkanddestroy on February 10, 2017, 07:14:38 AM
Yeah I agree -the reviews are nice, but posting ten a day makes it too overwhelming to read any. Posting two a day will make for some good discussion. Of course, that means it may take 100 days to post all their reviews, but so what? it means we'll have good discussions for at least the next 100 days  :)

I am another one, and I totally understand the hesitancy of some SLWB members to welcome a stampede of IMDb posters, but there were still a few good folks over there.

What I'm trying to say is... not all "road apples" are bad ones.  ^-^

Well it was originally newbie, but we thought "horse apple" would be more appropriate for a Western based board.

We're happy to have any good person join  :)

Just make sure he follow the exact process noted by the signup page. We have a thorough - and very successful - signup process in order to weed out spammers and automated signups. We used to have lots of spammers; since the new procedures were implemented we have, Thank God, had none. Leone is  only famous for six movies, so there is a limit to how much those can be discussed. A new discussion usually flares up when there's a new Blu-ray/DVD release,  but it's usually about the disc rather than about the movie.  But it is nice every once in a while when we have a discussion about a Leone movie  :)

So what happened to DJ's "Unofficial Peckinpah Board"?  :D

I know. But I took the opportunity to mention something serious – that I do enjoy when we have occasionally have a Leone  discussion  ;)

I think we are all drawn together as kindred spirits by Leone, but it is the non-Leone discussions that really sustain the board. The Sam Peckinpah forum is essentially moribund now since once everyone ran out of Peckinpah talk there wasn't much left to sustain it. I for one still have lots to say but it seems I'm talking mostly to myself over there and a couple of others. It's a shame really....

As for the noir info on here - helluva job CJ (and everyone else...). This is becoming a fantastic resource.

No doubt about it, the SLWB only survives and thrives because it is a forum for discussing all movies (and everything else!) But once in while, when we get a good Leone discussion going, I enjoy it  :)

I actually recently watched the new extended version of OUATIA, and I'm going to discuss it extensively. But I have not had the time lately to sit down and write a long post. I'll do it eventually  ;)
