Title: Bandidas (2006)
Post by: Guerrilla on September 26, 2004, 09:54:15 AM
Mexican newspaper El Universal reports that new Western comedy, Bandidas, will be shooting in Mexico
The movie is set in the 1880's and tells the story of Sara (Salma Hayek) and Marнa (Penelope Cruz), who are enemies at first due to the difference in their social classes, but then join forces as bank robbers.
The film, budgeted at around $35 million, is produced by Luc Besson and helmed by Norwegian directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg.

The production will shoot for two months in the state of Durango, two weeks in San Luis Potosн, and later will return to Churubusco Studios before wrapping in December.

Woohoo, Norwegian directors! The last time a Norwegian directed a western, was in 1996, when Nils Gaup made "Tashunga" from a script by Sergio Donati. The film starred Christopher Lambert (who also produced) and James Caan. The result was pretty dreadful. Let's hope this on will be better, although it could easily become another Bad Girls.

The directors were interviewed at a Norwegian talkshow. They showed an extremely short clip from the film. If the clip is representative of the film in its entirety, the film will be crap. It was cut like 99% of all hip hop videos on MTV. Not very promising, but the short clip might have been from the trailer, which might be the explanation for the godawful editing. The directors stressed that this was a western-comedy, not just a western. Supposedly Cruz and Hayek goes through a "bank robbing school" before they become actual bankrobbers. In other words, don't expect Leone here. Then again, why would we expect something truly great when Besson is producing. His has directed some great films (and some awful ones), but I can't recall having seen anything good produced by him.

Salma Hayek & Penelope Cruz have saddled up south of the border
to make a western movie about two female bank robbing outlaws
from the 1880's.  Filming finished in December and the release date
is now set for Jan 6, 2006.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph!  Two of the hottest women in Hollywood today together in a Western?  What a great idea!

My personal fantasy for the movie would be a sort of feminine version of "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" with Claudia Cardinale, Raquel Welch, and Sophia Loren. . . but, that's just me.  (And of course I mean in the '60s and '70s, stupidos.  :P)

I think Jeanne Moreau is so sexy, I didn't know she was in a western, who directed it? But one question. Why would Salma and Penelope wear corsets  if they didn't have too? I have a couple and they totally kill.

Any movie, and a western at that, with Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz can't be that bad.  And Steve Zahn, who was really funny in Sahara, is in Bandidas, so if nothing else the cast is good.

I don't know much about the movie, but I'm thinking the pairing of Hayek and Cruz will bring some moviegoers in even if the film stinks.

If it stinks and really loses money who is going to invest in any western project?

But you know what Leone says about women in a western and then you have the two leads as women, what are they thinking. It must be the women/horses angle they are trying to mine perhaps.  8)

ok we'll see, but don't say I didn't warn you. ;)

cigar joe, I'm still not sure if I'll spend $9 to go and seen Bandidas if the critics rip it apart, but I might wait till it goes to the dollar theatre or maybe on dvd.

I agree that if the movie is panned critically, it'll do mad box office-wise.  Hopefully, it does well and isn't another nail in the coffin of westerns.

Not a problem.  It's just that we might all be surprised by the film.  I'll admit the trailer looks... iffy, but I've seen films with awful trailers that turned out to be great and films with great trailers that were total garbage.

seriously, does anybody have any leads onto the release of this here in the states? Ive checked the web site and it says nothing about it coming over here.

If BA saw it as an advanced screening then I guess it came here and then vanished quickly but I doubt thats possible. Anything with Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek together is bound to be a main stream movie.

did a search on it, and found that the directors themselves gave the movie a 4 and a 5 on the dice. haha. what a joke.

it premiered in theatres here on 07. april 2006
and it seems that the only country with a dvd release so far is france. I think the movie was made partly with french money.

Seeing that the "Bandidas New Pix" is still in the top 5 for Most Viewed Topics, I thought I'd post a mini-review here.  I rented Bandidas not expecting a lot, but I did enjoy it.  It is not a great movie, and it's not a horrible movie, it's just one you're supposed to have fun watching.  The main reason of course is Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz in a western.  If you need an explanation for why that's a good thing, this probably isn't the movie for you.  Both women are incredibly gorgeous and the movie gives ample opportunity for them to show off their "talents."   ;D  Sorry though, no nudity, except for Steve Zahn's butt.

Overall, some good action scenes, including the last two bank robberies, there's some good humor, Hayek and Cruz have a great chemistry, Zahn is funny, and Sam Shepard has a small but good part as a veteran bank robber.  As well, Hayek does her best Britt impression, and Cruz is a whiz with a gun.  So all in all, worth renting, maybe not worth buying, but it's a fun movie that kept me entertained throughout.  And for your viewing pleasure....

I own the film. I had to buy it being I'm a huge fan of westerns and I absolutely love Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz. I think people jump the gun and bash this for no reason. It's a fun little western with comedy thrown in. The one thing that this movie has going for it, is it's beautiful cinematography. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. And, again, Salma and Penelope, WOWWOWOWOW! O0

I thought it was a huge dissapoinment, even for a comedy.

Bah, I don't know what was I thinking going to watch this. Couldn't even finish it.

The days when I could watch everything, good or bad, are I'm afraid behind me.

Well, I thought the movie was quite OK albeit nothing outstanding. Two cute women, mean-looking baddies, a few hilarious scenes involving horses, even a couple of scenes of bullets crossing a room that seem to be taken from The Matrix, an OK musical score, nice cinematography...What more could one ask from a western-comedy in today's day and age?  8)

Poor movie and boring western shoot em up.
No surprises thrown except a neat CGI gunfight towards the end.

The only way this could be watchable is if it exploited the two leading ladies more than it did.
I'm talkin' nudity, sex, the works.

Of course you could say that for about 80% of most Westerns,  O0

Yeah, but 80% of westerns don't have two hot ladies as the two main leads.
If you go out of your way to make a woman the star of the western and play up to her sexual attributes (as this film does) please be prepared to make her do anything.

Hannie Caulder has this same problem only that movie is worth a look.

2\10. I gave it 2 points just because the scene where the 2 girls seduce the investigator isn't very bad.  The movie should have followed that line, but grindhouse times are past...
