Title: I, the Jury (1953)
Post by: cigar joe on October 23, 2022, 08:42:00 AM
Can't believe we didn't have a seperate thread for this

This is all I could find on our board and it came in the "Best Mike Hammer" tread

I've seen "I, The Jury" (1953) with Biff Elliot in the role of Hammer and  Peggy Castel as Charlotte Manning and Tani Guthrie as Mary Bellamy were hot. Elliot on the other hand was a bit miscast

Now it's due for a real review...

Wow a restored release

People often say that, but look at the way Spillane himself plays Hammer in The Girl Hunters. Biff is doing Mickey, and Mickey (in his mind) IS Mike Hammer.

Restored Alton? Ordered! (And reportedly shipping today for those ordering directly from the manufacturer).

Tracking UPDATE UPDATE: In da haus!

Wow, from order to delivery: less than 48 hrs.! ClassicFlix (and USPS), I'm impressed. (Meanwhile, those idiots who buy through amazon have to wait until November 8th. Ha!)

As stated, I don't have a 3-D machine, so I'll have to settle for 2-D. I'll get back to you all soon with my report.

(Btw, great poster; thanks, Mike! Hey, doesn't "Richter" mean "judge"?)

Story: 6/10. Photography: 10/10 Transfer 11/10.

Lots of great extras, too, including a couple of commentaries, an appreciation of the 3-D (very helpful for 2-D viewers) and some TV shows that might or might not be related (loved the one with Peggie Castle). Maybe the best extra is a pilot for a Mike Hammer TV show that never aired, written and directed by Blake Edwards, starring Brian Keith. Unlike the later series with Daren McGavin, this show was truer to Spillane's vision, with a Mike Hammer who actually kills people. It would have made a great series, but it was, you know, ahead of its time. Edwards rebounded from this failure and came up with Peter Gunn, so things worked out well for him. Brian Keith finally landed on (ahem) Family Affair.

Anyway, there are two kinds of people: those with this release in hand, and those who don't give a rat's ass about film noir.

I'll get it eventually, lol.

CJ, more good news over at the ClassicFlix newsletter:
Quote
I, The Jury isn't the only Mickey Spillane sourced film that is finally being made available on home video as we can now share that next spring we'll be releasing 1954's The Long Wait. Beautifully photographed, the gripping film noir stars Anthony Quinn, Charles Coburn, Gene Evans and Peggie Castle and will be debuting on 4KUHD, Blu-ray and DVD.
Wow, more Spillane, more Peggie Castle!
