The guy is way out of line with regard to the CoR. It has points of interest because later memorable sequences in SL's oeuvre were first tried out here. The peeing on ants in DYS, for example, was prefigured in Rhodes (fire drops out of the colossus on escapees; the shot is filmed to make it seem its coming from between the statue's legs), as was Frank's final choreography in OUATITW. It's not just for completists: anyone who is interested in Leone's work and how it evolved should be interested in CoR.

UPDATE: I documented some of this in an earlier thread (http://www.fistful-of-leone.com/forums/index.php?topic=5111.30)

Unhappily, not all the screen caps survive.

OTOH, he makes a fabulous case for putting FAFDM in third place. Ultimately, though, he is not persuasive: the three films shot by Delli Colli must go highest. To deny this is to have no regard for cinematic lighting. Comparing FAFDM and DYS, I must again choose the better lit film (which also has better characters and a more interesting plot). So the correct order, top to bottom, is:

a DC film
a DC film
a DC film
DYS
FAFDM
FOD

CoR

You?re making a weird argument but in the end the order is correct so it?s all right.

Colossus of Rhodes would be so much more enjoyable if its runtime was under 90 minutes. There's definitely some good stuff there, but it's way too long.

I don't know if I'd rank DYS over the first two Dollars movies, which are iconic. AFOD changed movies in many ways, and who knows what becomes of the Spaghetti subgenre if it wasn't such a hit -- and it's a great exploitation/lower budget genre movie. FAFDM can be seen as the first buddy action movie.

DYS is definitely the less influential movie Leone made (after CoR of course). It?s still a much s  II period movie to the first two dollar films imo but yeah, if you erase it from history not much would change, while I don?t know what movie history would be like without the dollar films.

Nice. I did notice something that I never noticed before when discussing OUTIA. He shows a clip of the scene just before Domenic gets it at DUMBO because of the way he edited it I noticed the high rise apartment building on the left that looks a bit too modern for the 1920s. BTW that apartment house is on the other side of the East River a half mile away. Normally your focus is on the kids if you watch the film.

Sehr gut !  Ich verstehe !

So in Spiel Mir das Lied von Tod, what does Frank say to young Harmonica as he shoves the harmonica into his mouth?  "Spiel mir das lied von tod", or something else ?

Exactly that.

It's so much better than what Frank says in the original version.

The best Leone line that Leone never invented.

Agree: I would've better liked "Play me the song of death".

But English-speaking audience wouldn't know it was his brother or who was being hanged.  Did the German version refer to that earlier in the flashback?

No, here in Germany we all thought it was his father, cause of the big age difference.

Actually I have no idea why it is not his father?

Father might make more sense.

Of course, even if it was not a relative, could still be haunting Harmonica for decades...

IMO, regardless which line you prefer Frank said, as a movie title, ?Once Upon a Time in the West? is much better.

Yes, but only in the context of the film's deeper ambitions.

And maybe is does not sound that well in the English translation, but believe me, here in Germany this sounds incredibly good. And surely was one reason for the film's enormous success here. Over 13 mio sold tickets compared to 1,15 for GBU.
I don't like most of the German titles for westerns, they are mostly very generic or even really bad, but this one sounds pretty good, and works well in the context of the film. And to call the death rattle going through a harmonica a song of death, is as bizarre as it is great. I 'm sure Leone would have loved that, if it had been his idea.

''Spiel mir das lied von tod'' sounds over-the-top to me.

It often happens with various kinds and types of translators/translations - they try to 'better the original' - while most often than not accomplishing the exact contrary.

Maybe it sounds better in German and to German speaking people, but overall, psychologically - in terms of Frank's character and his development throughout teh story (if we can call it as such) - seems out of place.

"Hello. My name is Harmonica. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

No explanation was needed, as the age difference gave all the info you need. As long as no other explanation is given it is a natural assumption.

No, the question is why OuTW did not have instead the line: Make your loving father happy" ?
