Title: The ubiquitous GBU sound...
Post by: Jupa on February 15, 2003, 10:09:29 AM
I think the GBU main theme ("Ayeayee,wah-wah-wah") is the most widespread movie sound/music ever.I has been featured in numerous films, series and commercials, and usually it has been presented in a humorous context.

Would it be possible to compile a list of all the films/series/commercials that include that legendary sound? If you can think of any,let me know.I can compile a list on the basis of your replies.

Speaking of worldspread scores, I also think about another magnificent Morriconce soundtrack, the worlwide famous "Mission" with De Niro and Irons?

But there's and explanation for this: imediately after the film release, Catholic church all around the world "adopted" the score as the catholic "official" music....

It is true that the magnificent sensibility of this score let us know God much better than plenty of monks....

there are surely far too many to even consider indexing them all.  I mean there must be an ad out in every country in the world which somewhere uses that clip.  I wonder how much moricone made from that song?  Royalty and advertising wise?

Its funny you brought it up, I just heard a new Buick commercial with Tiger Woods  and golfers of the past that uses it. Totally out of context, not impressed with it at all, but great to hear the theme.

There is currently a tv ad. running in atleast Finland using the theme song. Bertolli Pasta I think it is. Like 10 years ago I remeber some Camel Boots ad. or Camel Thropy.

U.S. motor oil commercial a few years back used GBU main title, Morricone arrangement; but I can't remember if it was Valvoline or Castrol.  Inspector Gadget used GBU title for showdown on the bridge (was actually a Pittsburgh bridge).

it has to be used in every spook ever, i don't think one person who ain't a leone fan could ever guess who wrote it, or that Moricone's work is far more exstensive than a few bars of whistling

I can add some GBU sound allusions here too.At least one episode of Xena had the sound. It was a humorous episode that I think took place at Christmas time. The sound was heard when Xena shot an arrow with a toy bow. Then the sound was used in the MTV Movie Awards 1999 when Will Smith rode on a horse to the stage.

Please send in all the GBU sound uses that you can remember!

Here are a couple of more:

- MTV Europe (and maybe MTV US too) has an ad with a cartoon cowboy. The sound is used at the beginning, before the cowboy starts dancing.

- A recent (?) Conan O'Brian show from this year had a bit where Conan interviewed "Presiden Bush" via video screen. The sound was used after all,or at least some, answers "Bush" gave.

Anyone remember the good ol' CB radio days in the '70s and even part of the '80s?  I don't know how widespread this was, but on the "road channel" (was ch.19 where I live), people used to key up their mikes and play the GBU theme over the air.  I thought it was amusing - and it was.  Even in the early '90s, when the CB briefly made a comeback (at least it did here where I live), people would key up and play the GBU theme over the air, but in the early '90s, technology was better than in the '70s and '80s and so, you could get a chip and have it put inside the radio.  Then, all you'd have to do is press a button or flick a switch on your radio, then just key up.  Way back in the '70s, I think you would have needed a tape recorder or some fancy, hand-held gadget that you would hold up to your mike, then key up and press the button on your gadget.  Anyone else remember those days of the GBU theme over the CB airwaves?

Somewhere on this board, there is a topic and post where someone explains how the sound/movie theme was created.  It's really interesting to read.   It does have to do with a hyena sound.

I don''t know if you know a brand of tires that sells here in Mexico the name is Uniroyal, about 20 years ago they used the GBU sound in one  commercial of a tire named "Laredo" (something like this: "Ayeayee, La-re-do")

Greetings from México (and sorry about my english, I think it''s worst than Tuco''s)

Welcome Benedicto! Don''t worry about your English you just may be indespensible here.

I''ve been waiting for a poster from Mexico, we have posters from all over the world (a few from South America), but none from Mexico.

Now that you have arrived I have a few questions that I''ve been wondering about for a long time.

1., How were these Italian-Spanish westerns recieved in Mexico at the time or now even? I always wondered about this, especially how Mexicans reacted to a South West/Mexico that was filmed in Spain?

2., Did the Spanish town sets look real to you, or were there any glaring differences that any Mexican could point to and say no its not like that here?

3., How did the actors and extras playing Mexicans look to you, your opinions?

4., Are there any comparably great Mexican Westerns that you can put us on to, I''ve never heard of any but don''t know if that is because we just don''t see them or if there are none? What I know of the Mexican Film Industry is nada.

Thanks in advance,
Cigar Joe

I''m from Arizona, and the landscapes in the SWs look pretty much like lots of Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas to me.  And for the GBU sound, how about my Alltel GBU ringtone (and it was free).

You will notice on the new live Ennio DVD ARENA CONCERTO that he uses a wind instrument (like a clarinet...maybe someone can clarify) to produce the sounds, although it doesn''t sound quite like the film score, which sounds more like a human voice is being used.

Once again, GBU theme music turns up.  Today, while watching NBA basketball, saw a new Mountain Dew TV commercial with the GBU theme, in a showdown.

GBU title music turns up again in "Racing Stripes", 13 minutes into the film (currently on Cinemax).  The mailman and the zebra face off, with close ups to eyes, and to hand of the mailman.  Ennio Morricone credited at end of film.

Early 20 seconds or so of "The Ecstasy of Gold" turned up on History Detectiveds today on PBS HD near about 45 minutes into the show, at beginning of the third "search", trying to authenticate a poem from 1780 written by a Daniel Goodhue.  GBU music turns up everywhere - has to be the most "honored" film score in that way.

You're right about that, but I believe the Rocky theme is more overused and ruined by pop culture.
Title: Re: The ubiquitous GBU sound...

I would have to say no. I think the GBU theme is used far, far more than Rocky theme, or any other movie theme, for that matter.

And thank you Cusser for telling us all those GBU uses!  :)

Shows up again, this time in "We are Marshall".  Matthew McConaughey whistles it to the Head of Marshall, after telling him to approach the NCAA in person, with a gunfighter's mentality.  That was in 1971, so GBU was already out a few years.

what about the title?!!!!!!!!!
talk about a phrase becoming part of the language!

Ironically, the Italian is good, UGLy and Bad.
I doubt that version would have become so famous (Sergio and hizza titles).
You gotta giva United Artist credit for re-ordering the title. Of course "bad' should follow 'good'

hi guys,
just to clear this up..........

the original soundtrack motif, ay-ee,ay-ee, ahhhh!, is to my ear, a mix of someone screaming a one single pitch and another screaming the actual motif.
also there's a lot of distortion (audio overload) and reverberation added, but it's different each time.
those days, audio was very basic and you couldn't do computer stuff like cut and paste.

Have you seen the movie? Ecstasy of Gold isn't used in the film itself, just the trailer. It does pay a large degree of homage to OUATITW (among other films), but I don't see that as an inherently bad thing.

the wonder years is about as honest of a portayal of the growing up process as a big network show can let it be (this sentence is awkward, my apologies). I recently saw this episode and forgot about the GBU reference, thought it worth sharing. I tried searching for the GBU reference thread but couldn't find it, so I had to make a thread.

sorry for the pun, they suck.

at this year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Fox had a little piece on Yasiel Puig called The Good, the Fun, and the Puig. They don't actually use the GBU music – I guess they didn't wanna pay for it – so you can hear other music (I assume newly composed) that is obviously inspired by both the main theme of GBU as well as the Ecstasy of Gold. I recorded it cuz I figured some of you fags who don't watch baseball might still wanna see it
