My original screen name was Valentin Zukovsky, after the character played by Robbie Coltrane in the James Bond films "GoldenEye" and "The World Is Not Enough".  I believe I changed it to the Cigarette-Smoking Man (or some variation thereof), because I was on a huge "X-Files" kick.  Now, my character is named after Luigi Pistilli's character in "For A Few Dollars More" (you could probably guessed).  I've decided to stop changing my name so that I'll cease confusing people.  :P

well chum is my favorite word(it means both fish guts and old friend) and when I was first getting a web based email address I chose to have grandpa preceed it(even though I'm only 19 years old) as opposed to some random number I'd never remember following it.

When I was about 10 (early 1960s) I cussed, and a friend a few years older playfully slapped each cheek and exclaimed "why you little cusser....", and it stuck.

Cussboy is a variant (when Cusser is taken) from when my brothers and I started calling each other "boy" after van Cleef's calling Manco "boy" and later calling Bill "boy" in DRAH, and Eastwood calling Bruce Dern "boy" in Hang 'em High".

Well, I initially posted under the guise of Half Soldier (as I do on SWWB).  But because I didn't want to tread on (the lack of) toes of the Half Soldier already on here, I changed it to Marco Leone.

Marco Leone is the jokey name I gave myself, as part of the Leone Brothers (with my pal Tony Leone), when we filmed some spaghetti spoofs in Almeria.

Well, I love Leone - and I'm a geek. I'm a geek who loves Leone.
I'm such a fan of Leone that it crosses over from fan, to geek.
There's really no point in trying to maintain some cool about it.

I am Leonegeek.

I saw the cover of the single with the music of FOD (which was a big hit in Italy in 1964) at a friend's home, probably before I saw the movie. I was (and partly still am) befuddled by this non-"title" (well, in italian titoli, apart from being the plural of "title", means "film credits"),  and couldn't understand why they couldn't find a better "titolo" to the tune. I think Morricone, like all the rest, was surprised as any by the success of the movie and hadn't cared about it.

This name is inspired by that great Austrian(i think) SW actor William Berger who starred in the role of Banjo in Sabata.Apart from acting and dressing really cool(yes, including the bells on his trousers!),i like the duplicity of the character - you are never really sure what his motives are and whether he is as he says"just passing through".
Also as a musician(i like playing anything with strings) i made a homemade banjo instrument out of a hand moulded fimo clay(sort of plasticky) body with an old tambourine skin sewed onto it and a length of wood inserted to act  as a neck and head. Finally i glued matchsticks as frets, hand carved 4 tuning pegs and tied on fishing line as the strings.Apart from being a bit on the quiet side(i 've also attached  a cheap electric pick-up!) it sounds pretty good with that distinctive twang.I play it with a plectrum. And my party piece? - yes you guessed it-BANJO'S THEME!!!

Title: Re: USERNAME ???
Post by: marmota-b on September 29, 2006, 05:35:58 AM
Mine is pretty complicated...

When we were on a holiday camp with my sister, the children there were parted into two groups, older and younger. The older were Beavers and the younger were Marmots/Groundhogs (according to what name for that animal you prefer. ;)). As you can guess, I was Marmot; and my sister was Beaver. When we were meeting, we always were saying "Hello, sister Beaver" - "Hello, sister Marmot" - and it stayed. My nickname is "Svišť", i.e. Marmot.
When I was creating my e-mail adress, I just didn't want to use my real name at the moment, so I used my nick - in Latin, because it sounded good. And because the provider made people have dot in their usernames, I added the first letter of my surname after the dot. marmota.b
When I joined IMDb (I think it was there), the dot was turned into dash. I liked it, so I decided to use this username everywhere.

Well, tell me more, Silenzio, tell me more.

I thought it was darn good, Mifune was marvelous, and there was some truly memorable dialogue:

"Stupid friends are dangerous."

"Go away, or I am liabel to kill you."

It was just all around good, strong plot, strong acting, Kurosawa's direction is great (as always), and it's a solid film. I'm really not one to leave  lengthy reviews, unless prodded to do so (like in that one Duck, You Sucker thread). I'll just say I preferred Yojimbo, and though Sanjuro was very solid, it didn't have that special "something" that movie like Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Ran, Yojimibo etc. had.

Out of all the Kurosawa films I've seen (8 or 9) this one is probably one of my least favorites, but that doesn't mean it's not a good film, it's still great. Soon I'll be watching Ikiru, which I'm long overdue to see, and after that, probably Red Beard.

If "Yojimbo" is a rhapsody of desolate winter, "Sanjuro" is a rondo of spring. They are good companion to each other. I love them both.

Enjoy "Ikiru" and "Red Beard". They are more serious films. Let me know what you think of them in Off Topic Forum.

Ooops, I have not talked about my username, have I? As many of you may know already, Sanjuro is a hero's name in Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro (Tsubaki)". Clint Eastwood's character in "A Fistful of Dollars" is based on Sanjuro in "Yojimbo". You know that already too.

Ha, my case is totally the other way around. I don't have "Yojimbo" DVD from Criterion but I do have "Sanjuro" DVD from them. The reason I don't want Criterion version of "Yojimbo" is that the title sequence is written in English. That's a big turn off for me. It's gotta be the original dynamic brush stroke Japanese titles. So my "Yojimbo" DVD is a Hong Kong Version. But I'm trying to buy Japanese DVD from Toho.

"Sanjuro" from Criterion is worth buying it. Good transfer. Film itself is great too. Quite a comedy. My only complain is that the credits in Japanese are chopped on either side (just slightly). But that won't bother you.

Wait for the remastered edition, out soon (maybe December). I have the Toho DVD (which doesn't have sub-titles) and Criterion will undoubtedly use the same source for their disc, so the re-release should look fantastic (the Toho certainly does).

It's very good, but not all parts have equal interest. I really hate the "cute" little kid in the final episode. Kurosawa often fell into kawai, unlike Ozu who always portrayed Japanese children (at least, Japanese male children) faithfully.

First of, I know it's skeleton, not sceleton.

I have the same username on IMDb; I just thought it would be simple if I used the same name. Originally I came up with this name when I saw a Leone fan called moviewerewolf and thought her name was cool. So I just changed werewolf to sceleton (yeah, I know I'm a big copycat  ;D). I was going through some kind of horror movie phase at that time.

He's German.

eh, what do you mean by that?

I was refferring to Sabata's BANJO, Austrian actor William (Wilhelm) Berger..

Gianni Garko (Garcovich) was born in Dalmatia (yesterdays Jugoslawia).
Love him too. Lots of bad films too, but he surely had something to offer.
Just watched WATERLOO the other night...

In an interview, I own, Garko says that Berger is German.
Could be a mistake.

Metallica, the greatest heavy metal band of all-time -- were always well-known as big drinkers (they were nicknamed "Alcoholica") and at concerts, they often jokingly changed changed the names of their songs to alcohol-related themes or some other joke. eg. "Harvester of Sorrow" became "Harvester of Sapporo"; "Whiplash" became "Dickrash," and "Seek and Destroy" became "Drink and Destroy." I used the name Drink and Destroy on the Metallica message boards -- the only other board I have ever been a member of, but which I haven't written on in many years, it's a bunch of lunatics screaming "Fuck you!" NO, "Fuck YOU!" No, FUCK YOOOUUUU!" NO, FFFUUUUCCCKKK YOOU AND YOUR MOTHER!....")

When it came time to choose a username for these boards, I tried few Leone-related names which were all taken, so then I decided, screw it, I'll go with the only message board name I know. So that's how I became (in)famous as drinkandddestroy.

[bNow, here is the best part of the story: it just so happens that Metallica is responsible for getting me into Leone in the first place! [/b] In a very brief nutshell: at the start of every concert, Metallica walks out onto the stage as a recording of "Ecstasy of Gold" plays over teh arena's loudpseakers. That is as much a part of Metallica lore as anything. (Look up any recording of EoG on YouTube, and half the comments are from Metallica fans. I heard it was from some movie named GBU, so I figured, what the heck, lemme watch it, which I did about 8 years later. the rest is history.......

if you are really bored and want the longer version of that story: So I heard that the song EoG was composed by some Italian named Ennio Morricone for some movief rom 1967 called The Good The Bad and The Ugly, which was categorized as something called a Spaghetti Western???. So I figured that eventually, I'd have to watch that  movie. About 8 years passed, I occasionally remembered, eventually I gotta see that movie that EoG is from; and I was also reminded cuz the movie was also mentioned on an episode of Seinfeld; at that time in my life, I had two obsessions: metallica and Seinfeld (I must have seen the 180 episodes a total of 20,000 times. No exaggeration needed). well at some point, I believe it was 2009, I was in my law school dorm, bored, wanted to watch a movie; in those days I rented movies off iTunes, I'd just discovered I had so many movies available to me, and I decided, hey, what the heck, I'll watch that movie GBU now [in those days, I had zero interest in westerns, I didn't even know it was a western until it started!] well I turned on the movie, kept waiting and waiting for EoG to play, of course it doesn't play till like 2 and a half hours into the movie!
well, while waiting for EoG to play, I suddenly realized that I was watching greatness, pure and simple. I was BLOWN AWAY by the movie; after watching it, I went online to read about it on wikipedia, I read that it was directed by some Italian named Sergio Leone as part of something called the "Dollars Trilogy," so I figured, hey, lemme watch the rest of the trilogy................................................ the rest is history. It's been love at first sight, every moment from the first moment to now. pure, unadulterated love and obsession, but the kind that doesn't ruin a man....... Until that moment, I was a casual movie fan at best. watched movies occasionally when bored, wasn't any big part of my life. From the moment I began watching Leone, and then studying more about him through Frayling's commentaries and books, that turned cinema into an obsession for me.

Okay, my time is up here  ;)

I didn't know anything at all about it. Didn't know it was a Western, didn't know it involved the Civil War, or anything else. All I knew was that it was a 1967 movie starring Clint Eastwood THAT PLAYED THE ECSTASY OF GOLD!

How did it strike you (I presume it did) the original version of EoG?

well the first time I heard EoG was when I watched videotape (yes, it was literally a videotape) of a Metallica   >:D concert for the first time. This was Metallica's  >:D famous "S&M" concert -- "Symphony & Metallica," in which they teamed up with the late Maestro Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony for a concert of their music with the symphony! So as an opening, the symphony played a shortened version of EoG
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG62B_dHfDQ
during the moments the crowd roars, that's when one of the boys walks on stage  >:D

Ironically that was the first Metallica concert vid I ever watched.
THis was when I just started following Metallica, so  I initially thought that for the sake of the symphony, Michael Kamen had chosen a symphonic-only piece to begin the concert.

Later, when watching other concert vids (and I eventually attended at least 3 concerts myself) I realized they started every concert with that song,  they played the version from the movie. But I didn't realize at the time that they used the actual one from the movie's soundtrack; to me and my friends who had never seen the movie,  it seemed like it was  a recording of one the band members singing the song! (We were convinced it was Jason Newsted)

eg. here is a beautiful version from Nimes as the crowd of many tens of thousands sings along
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQrvb3i1q-E

Then, for the first time in about 2009, the boys actually began playing a version of EoG on stage: see 1:47 of this vid
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z57hyZmbE8A

pretty incredible, eg? absomotherfuckinglutely!  >:D

okay, now that I got my childhood off my chest, so titoli prolly really wanted to know how I felt when I first heard it in the movie?

so, I eventually decide to watch the movie, and I'm waiting and waiting and waiting... the first half of movie moved too slow for me. Maybe I woulda shut it off and said "screw it"  but I needed to hear EoG! And I'm thinkiong, dan, maybe there was a mistake? I mean, when do u have a big theme in a movie not been heard at all once the movie is 90% done? Then suddenly Tuco's head hits a gravestone, and ooo, oooo, oooooo AND I'M LIKE OMFG ITS THE ECSTASY OF GOLD! I'd never imagined it would be a part of THAT, one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. (And I certainly never thought it would be topped only 5 minutes later with Il Triello! but that's another story  ;))

I was not referring to the fact that the tune was there but that, I presume, you probably caught the differences between the two versions: How did that original version impress you musically compared to the h-m versions you were already familiar?

P.S. Just out of curiosity: but when some officials ask you to give your generalities, do you start from your first recorded ancestor or you  just say name, birthplace and date of birth?

when you say "the differences between the two versions," do you mean the difference between the version Metallica walks out to onstage and the one from GBU? I believe that the version they walk out to is a recording of the GBU version (with the exception of the S&M show where the symphony played a special version).

p.s. I usually answer to the point, but when Metallica (and booze) are involved, I may occasionally digress  ;)

I've yet to hear of any Metallica fans on this board besides me.

I've been to three of their concerts (one in Madison Square Garden in New York City; two in Nassau Coliseum on Long Island); I didn't go to the Yankee Stadium show cuz it was not a typical show with Metallica headlining: it was called  THE BIG FOUR with there other heavy metal legends: Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth) so when tickets went on sale, I wondered if they would do a normal set [ which is usually 2-2.5 hours] so I figured, I've been to 3 of their normal shows why do I need to go to a show with 3 bands I don't care about. I then forgot about it for a few months, till after the show was over. By that time I regretted not going. I don't know if they played a normal set but it doesn't matter, it would have been awesome to see the boys in Yankee Stadium.

Oh well, I'll see 'em next time they come 'round the Big Apple.

And on that note, I am still still hoping that Ennio Morricone will do a show around here too someday. Unfortunately, seems like he has been sticking to Italy lately.
(How about the 'Tallica boys and the Maestro co-headlining a show?  ;))

I own every Metallica album from Kill 'Em All to Death Magnetic (Master of Puppets I have on both CD and vinyl), but I'm not sure if I would call myself a real fan anymore. My interest in music has shifted elsewhere (I still listen to some heavy metal but now I listen all other kinds of stuff, too) and I can't remember when was the last time I listened to them. But the first four or five albums will always be dear to me, in a way. I saw them play live in 2006 when I was sixteen, and the moment when Ecstasy of Gold started playing will probably stay with me forever (Metallica and Leone were like the most important things in my life back then).

FUCK YEAH  >:D >:D >:D >:D

They haven't made good music in over two decades, but their 80's shit will remain the greatest music ever made.

I too have hardly listened much to them in quite a while; they don't make good shit anymore, and there are only so many times I can listen to the same albums over and over again. But they are still a great live show, and I see them every time I can. And I'll also be grateful to them for introducing me to Leone. (And I only started listening to classical music after their S&M concert introduced me to that stuff. And I only started getting into art (paintings) after I was introduced to it by Leone. So one art form introduces a person to another  O0)

Very interesting backstory there, did you walk into GBU with any expectations when you first saw it?

No expectations.  We who knew who Clint was from Rawhide, and GBU (Montenegro version) was a hit on the radio, and we liked westerns.  No advertising here in Phoenix at all, never saw a trailer.  It was 1968 and I was 15.

We couldn't figure out in the title sequence why there were so many Italian names.
