Title: Coburn or Steiger
Post by: Beebs on August 10, 2005, 08:09:14 AM
Who is the lead role in this? Naturally I haven't seen it because I cant find where to buy it but after reading Eli Wallach's book he was offered the role in this movie but the producers said no use steiger. But I thought it was James Coburn who ended up playing in the role.

nope, Steiger ended up getting Eli's role

James Coburn has the lead role though, the film is mostly about him

I could see Eli Wallach playing Juan, but Rod Steiger did a great job.

No, not both Wallach and Steiger. Steiger's character reminded me of Tuco, so I believe Wallach could have played him, but Rod Steiger did a great job in the role.

I thought they were both equally important characters.  I don't remember thinking Coburn was any more significant when I saw the movie.

Depending on how you look at it, FOD is sort of a buddy film although somewhat twisted.  Sean and John have a similar relationship to Manco and Mortimer, a very uneasy alliance.

sometimes sean is called john(there is a discussion on  that in this board somewhere)

lets take into account that john is his real name.

did u know juan in english(usually) is john.

so technically the two main characters are both john

if u ever want more useless trivia just ask me ;D

in my opinion, coburn is not the leading role, neither is steiger.
The movie is not about  a man, it's about the relationship between Juan and John...

the revolution steiger and colburn get into reminds me of the civil war blondie & tuco get caught up in w/ a big difference . AE's, blondie & tuco avoided the war with disgust.  so many men wasted so badly.

th civil war was about slavery, cotton, and southern "pride". the revolution was different.
there was a real cause to take up arms....and dynamite

You don't think the abolition of slavery was a worthy cause Kermit?

if the civil war is what it took to abolish slavery in the south then so be it.
thanks for your kind attention
