I checked it out, and I also received a confirmation by Amazon that we are talking about the 226 minutes version.

This time, it's the right one!!!

This is just wonderful news.

The name Amazon has is:
Once Upon a Time in America - S.E.

What does S.E. stand for?

At 226 minutes, does this correspond to the normal full length version?

S.E. stands for Special Edition, I believe. The running time shows it's a complete version.

You have to be very careful with this.

Fnac.fr annouces a 220 minute version, but amazon.fr, who works with fnac, has the 116 minute version.

Before buying the DVD from Fnac, I personnaly would check it in Fnac Les Halles if it is the 220/226 minute version.

I'm maybe wrong, but I would tell you to buy the DVD from Amazon.com (USA) if you can read the zone 1 dvds.

just looked on www.play.com.They have details of the Region 1[but not the Region 2,I assume it will be the same]release of OUATIA.They are

Original Director's Cut

Audio Commentary with film critic Richard Schickel

Revealing 'Once Upon A Time' Sergio Leone doc.[sounds like the same one that Film Four used to show in the Uk but I could be wrong]

Photo Gallrey

Trailer

Sounds OK.the commentary should be interesting but there's no mention of deleted scenes.

Great....... :-\

Now the guys at Warner have finally decided they are going to release a full DVD version of OUATIA with the oh-so-unimportant exception of the director's country of origin.
Too absurd to be true, isn't it?

Does any of you guys know something about an Italian release?
Does either the English or the French 226' release have an Italian-spoken version? I would content with that...

Looking forward to your feedback...

The Amazon.com DVD release is annouced in English and French, no other language.

Amazon.fr has an italian version in language and in subtitle, but don't forget that it's the 116 minutes version.

Shorty,
since both the American and the English releases are 220 or 226' long, why should Warner decide to release in France the butchered 116' version?

If you consider that all of them are announced as 2-DVD special editions maybe for once Fnac is right while Amazon.fr is not....... at least this is what I hope ;)

And now I've found this:
http://www.cinestore.com/html/fiche_produits.php?groupe=1&page=1&id=18121&code_origine=1063AE (http://www.cinestore.com/html/fiche_produits.php?groupe=1&page=1&id=18121&code_origine=1063AE), one more website where they say that the French release will be 220' long and will have Italian language and subtitles.

I really don't know what to say. The editor in France is Warner Home Video too but the DVD itself is made in France.

Now, if you compare the information on Amazon.com and Amazon.fr, Amazon.com is explicit: "Newly Remastered Director's Cut Print". Amazon.fr doesn't say anything about this.

Anyway, Allocine.fr says that it is the 220' version too.

From my own part, I've already buy the DVD from Amazon.com (USA). If I was you, I'll wait until the physical release of the DVD in Fnac, and check personally if it is the 220'/226' version.

I don't want to purchase the DVD from Amazon.fr or Fnac.fr and find the surprise that it's the 116' version!

I agree with you.
After all we've been waiting for years, so we may as well wait for another couple of months... and see which version will actually be released

Right, Amazon says 226 minutes. But several other web sites, in reporting the new release, describe it as "the 229-minute international release". Most of these web sites use the same wording for the entire new item, which may indicate they are copying it directly from some official press release. I never heard of a 229-min version before: I thought the "full" version was 226, with a slightly shorter 224-min version for the US (so that it could get an R rating, instead of X or whatever, 2 minutes where cut from the rape scene). I guess we'll just have to wait and see -- currently, the Warner Home Video site has no info on this DVD at all. In any event, I can't wait to finally get it!
FYI, several people asked about an existing DVD (with yet another different run time, at 227), which is "region free" and apparently comes with English, Portugese and Spanish soundtracks. I believe this was a Brazilian release, though whether it was official or not, I don't know. It has been available in the US through several import dealers for some time. But I never bought it, after finding out that it is a full-screen version. I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch Leone's direction mangled like that!

220' 226' 227' 229'
are all these versions actually different or are they all the same, the discrepancy on running times might be due to different methods in film and standards transfer.

It seems that there are two different offering (DVD zone 2) in europe (FNAC in France or Playcom in UK): 116 minutes release immediately available AND 220 minutes (2 disks) annouced by June.
I checked today the FNAC website and the second one offering (the most complete) is cancelled. I am very disappointed and I wrote it to FNAC.
For information:

Thank's god Playcom in UK still maintains the product and the delivery date (June 30)

220' 226' 227' 229'
are all these versions actually different or are they all the same, the discrepancy on running times might be due to different methods in film and standards transfer.

Yes, that's a good point about the running time being affected by different film standards (NTSC vs PAL, for example) because of their different frame rates. Perhaps that does explain some of the discrepancies. But in addition  to that, there were multiple "cuts" of the film, with different running times. There's a good discussion of this at: http://home.earthlink.net/~davidp_hayes/Articles/m10.html

That article discusses five different versions (one of which is only a rumor). One of these runs for 3hrs 46 minutes but was cut by two minutes to 224 mins for release in the States, so that it could receive an R rating (jnstead of, presumably, an X rating). The 2 mins were cut from the second rape scene -- some people think these cuts actually improved that scene, others disagree (of course).

But other versions with times of 227 or 229 minutes are not mentioned. Maybe the article is not that authoritative after all, or maybe there's bad information on the times people quote, or maybe the different film-rates account for some of this. Amazon is still quoting 226 minutes, Warner is still saying nothing, and other sites (which seem to be  based all on the same press release) are saying 229 mins. Foreign releases are (like the full-frame, unrestored Brazilian release that has been floating around fo a while) often quote 227! We'll soon find out!
Cheers,
--Alistair

And now... Germany will get it too!!!
Go have a look at http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009555U/ase%5Fwwwkelkoode-21/028-7204349-1162962 (http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009555U/ase%5Fwwwkelkoode-21/028-7204349-1162962). It will be released on June 18, but no technical info is available yet, nor could I find it in other German websites.
.
.
.
Updated news: today the same site has cancelled June 18 as expected release date, and my German is a little too rusty -to say the least- to understand what they say there

Shorty, you are right, I'm becoming nut
Today
1° Amazone Site in France announces a collector (2 disks) and 116 minutes by June 12
2° FNAC annouces the same collector and 220 minutes by june 30 ,  BUT delete this offering without explaination
3° Play Com in U.K still annouces the same collector by June 30  without any information about time lenght.

I am not quiet.

GuyBrush, I keep my fingers crossed , but  the offering on CINESTORE seems the same than another sites: 220 minutes ? really ? What the part of  movie and comments?

By the way ,  Playcom in UK now shows us a new cover with Williamsburg Bridge (as any others) AND a smart De Niro face.

But always no comment about lenght.  ???

Yes, I like that cover with DeNiro-Noodles very VERY much.
It's a pity that in France they will release a slightly different cover.

As regards length, don't worry, it will be the 220' version which circulated in Europe in the 80's, as also reported by BlackStar

I own the US laserdisc which runs 226 min. On this version there is an important flasback of the final scene missing. I hope they corrected that and the 3 more minutes on the DVD-version is a hint for that.
Does anybody know more about that?

Most versions of the film seem to omit the scene you mention[presumably the scene when Max is trying to get Noodles to shoot him and he remembers various bits from childhood briefly].the really old UK video had this scene in,and so did a showing on UK's Channel 4,but the widescreen video did not,nor did a showing on BBC2.I have a [rather poor]Portuguese DVd of the film and the scene is still missing!I also hope to God the forth-coming DVD has it.
