Title: Why brother?
Post by: mono on April 22, 2003, 05:12:01 AM
i apologize if this was asked before.

from the day i first saw the movie i always thought the man standing on the shoulders of the boy was his father. then i read that it is his brother.
i couldn't believe this is the case (becaus of the age, i guess)
does anybody of you know why it has to be the brother and not the father, or uncle, cousin, friend..?
is there a source of this fact in the movie itself? (i only know the synchronized - German - version.)

Frank says to Harmonica "Hmph...keep your lovin brother happy."  Then, of course, he shoves the harp in his mouth.

Right.  And if it were his father it would be too cliché, I think.  It works best being his brother.

I was just thinking. Leone was an only child wasn't he?
In FAFDM and OUATITW there is the theme of revenge for a sibling maybe leone always wanted to have brothers and sisters and this was his way of fantasising about that. Just a thought.

i see. the German translation is "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod", which is also the title of the film and means "Play the song of death for me".
thank you for clarifying this.
(i can't wait to get the DVD to watch the original in pure English!)  ;D

I understand, it was impossible to imagine without this sentence.
Really there is a great age difference between the two brothers.
In french Frank saiys: play for your "grand frere" . Who knows the original sentence in Italian ?
Its possible that Sergio unconsciently tried to supress the age delta between Frank and Harmonica : I mean that harmonica seems very young when his brother is hanged.
And many years later when he met Frank, Frank and him both are tired.
So the old brother coulb be there only to say us: harmonica is not so young, look his brother is old.
Other enigma: young harmonica looks very indian with black eyes.. ???

the italian sentence is:
"Suona qualcosa a tuo fratello"
means: play something for  your BROTHER

That just shows how good the English Language version of the script reads, doesn't it?
"Keep your lovin' brother happy" is just such a menacing line when compared to "play something for your brother".

I don't think young Harmonica looks indian, he looks definately Mexican to me...
But I have noticed that young Harmonica wears the same clothes as the 'old' one...  Must be some really good set of clothes to last that long...

it's interesting to see what differences there are in the different language versions of this movie.
