Title: Ennio Morricone 19/7/06 London Concert
Post by: daylami on April 14, 2006, 09:01:16 AM
Ennio Morricone is doing one concert in England this year.It will be at the Hammersmith Apollo,London on Wednesday 19th July from 7.30pm.I have bought a ticket through Ticketmaster £57.50 (including postage and booking fee). This may be a last opportunity to see the great man performing the music from Sergio Leone's movies in England.

Just in case any of you guys were not aware and would like to attend the concert.

I am also attending on the 19/7 as you know Daylami. I was lucky enough to go to his last concert in November 2003 at he Royal Albert Hall. I t was also Meastro Morricone`s 75th birthday which was extra special and I managed to get Sir Christopher Fraylings autograph who was sat near to me, he was very pleasant. Incidentally if any members are going I have to say it did seem possible to try for an autograph from the man himself as during the encores etc he stands smiling and bowing and all that and a guy did approach him with programme and pen in hand but the Meastro didnt seem to understand what the guy was after, he doesnt speak any English I beleive. So Morricone just smiles and shakes the guys hand instead. I would certainly settle for that though! Then sell my hand on e-bay? No need to video the concert as the complete set is available on DVD, I have it and it is excellent, unless of course there is some new scores or a different set.  Wonder why thw venue has changed, has anyone any views on the Apollo?

I am going with my wife and I cant wait (and even she is excited after having listened to Edda dell Orso in OUATIW - I just hope the hungarian symphonics know what they're doing...

Maybe I'll see y'all there - I am in row T, somewhere in the 30'ies, dont remember, but it's pretty phenomenal seats.

Enjoy!

He will most probably be performing more or less the same gig as on the DVD "Arena Concerto", almost 2,5 hours of greatest (OUATIW, OUATIA (suite), DYS, GBU (main + ECSTASY OF GOLD)) + casualties of war, the red tent, canone inverso, The Mission, Cinema Paradiso, 1900, Legend of the pianist on the Ocean and so on - also with a bit of his more avantgarde stuff.

BTW - the following double disc contains STEAMING GREAT new recordings of the classics + Guns for San Sebastian, theme from Marco Polo, A LOT - even an incredible version of Man with a Harmonica - by the famous Prague philharmonics. Get it:

Tight sound, man.

Have just got a new cd of Morricone`s work with the director Tornatore, who is also an excellent director (Cinema Paradiso, Legend of 1900 etc) Got me thinking that Morricone`s best work albeit arguably and i do not want to upset anyone was with Leone. they seemed to share a certain intangible understanding, having said that his stuff for Tornatore is top drawer. Other  directors seem to stick with one composer also Speilberg/Williams, Lynch/Badalamenti and our own Neil Jordan with Elliot Goldenthal. What  do members think of these special relationships and can one imagine anyone else other than Morricone working with Leone?

mmm, the problem is that Leone had a different composer for The Colossus of Rhodes, his first film, Angelo Francisco Lavagnino. Cant remember how shoddy the score was tho...

The websites of the Apollo indicate that our concert is still on.

It's been rescheduled for December 1st and 2nd, I believe.

Oh well, glad I'd not arrange to ferry my dad from Boro to see it.

Yeah i did, my train tickets were no refundable and would have cots me £80 to change the date of them to december 1st, because the timetable are only set till october, don't get me started.

So me and our lass went down to london for a night, which was a nice break i suppose.

It could have been worse, because on the train down when i was getting off at kings cross, i heard someone mention sergio leone, and the man who was sat next to this couple when he was getting off said "nice to meet, you, and enjoy your concert tonight." So when i was getting off i politely aksed them if they were going to see ennio morricone tonight and they said with smiley faces, "yeah, we are." Only for their smiles to be wiped off when i said "so you don;t know it's been cancelled then and moved to december?"

Save to say they weren't happy, but thanked me for letting them know anyway.

They did ask me how i knew, and i told them that ticketmaster has phoned me and informed me, and i also recieved an email from them.

It's shockng really, 2 days before a concert and cancelling it, with no explanation. Juts my luck and ennio will die in september or something and i'll never get to see him, he is 84.

Did anyone else actually go the concert only to find out it was cancelled?

We came to London from Denmark on Monday 17th - went to Hammersmith with the greatest of expectations in a cab from Soho - to find a dead venue and a sorry looking weasly little note slappin me in the face... first I almost shed a tear then I knocked back 2 pints in 5 minutes. It was to be the event of a lifetime - and it went away...

Schroll down on the right, you'll see upcoming concerts. I kid you not, Leone/Morricone is too important to me. NYC is a 6 hours car ride from Montréal so I'll most probably be there. The Radio-city site has nothing listed after oct 2006, so we'll have to wait for confirmation. Unless, Peacemaker can confirm for us.

Sorry!   Lately, it just seems we are losing more and more of the talent from the 60's and 70's. When Sandra Dee passed on last year I was devastated :'(. She was my very first love interest. I had written to her on several occassions over the years. She was very special...and now she is gone. Maybe it is my age catching up to me, but I become despondent just thinking about these things. Sorry for the downer.

Final thought: I wonder if Ennio reads this thread or the people around him.

Great stuff Peace.
If this is his first concert here then this is a historic event that I'm really gone try to go to!

and I encourage others to do the same. I have a feeling he wont be coming back here...

I hope he plays "Giu LA testa".

He does and it's magic but it's Ecstacy of Gold that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It's usually the final piece in the Leone tribute and the crowd goes wild when it's finished.
If the concert is on I'll be going.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was so pissed off he never want's to hear the "M" word ever again. I thought it was odd the way the National Film Theatre event was cancelled, but the way actual concert was cancelled was just crazy.

The London Hammersmith gig has been rescheduled to Dec. 1st - I just got another pair of plain tickets from across the North Sea for that date - for just that one night in London. I pray he makes it this time, I'm getting tired of flying to London... Please Ennio - get your act together...

As I mentioned before - set list will be similar to Arena Concerto DVD from a couple of years back:

http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/review.asp?ID=1938

I seem to remember other members of this board writing about their attendance to some of the concerts on this tour.

You've been to a Morricone concert? Can you give us a full review?

In Europe we've been a little spoiled. I've managed to get to three of the many concerts and they've all been heart-stopping. The one at the Royal Albert Hall in London was spectacular and I can tell you that this huge hall was packed (literally) to the rafters. This was in 2003 on the Maestro's actual birthday (75) and the crowd sang "Happy Birthday" at the end. I think it was the first time I saw him smile. He appears to be such a shy, serious and intense man that I feel he doesn't actually know how to respond to adulation so gives the impression that he is a bit stand-off-ish. He has not spoken at any of the concerts I was at.
Apart from the Leone Western stuff he included the likes of The Mission, Casualties of War, Queimada, Cinema Paradiso, The Battle of Algiers, Sacco and Vanzetti. The recent cancelled London Concerts now rescheduled for December are to include some I haven't heard live before so that's something to look forward to. Check it out here
http://www.atpfestival.com/events/dont-look-back/line_up.php?view=642

I would expect that the NYC concert will be similar to London. Miss it your peril - assuming it goes ahead  :) but please leave some tickets for us on this side of the pond.

The Concert version of GBU main theme is an awful lot different from the one we're used to but works.
Insofar as nobody can ever replace Edda del Orso the Sean,Sean,Sean and OUTIW themes are always tear-jerkers and, as mentioned, Ecstacy of Gold blows you away.

One thing we got in 2003 but we won't get in London in December and probably NYC is Portuguese singer Dulces Pontes who performs songs from Sacco and Vanzetti and the likes of La Luz Prodigiosa and Sostienne Pereira. Believe me when I say this an act all by itself.

Anyone suggest a venue where members can meet pre-concert on the friday of the concert, somewhere near to the Hammersmith appllo and some method of knowing who`s a member without wearing Poncho`s!

Why, I was just hoping this was the perfect opportunity for wearing it! Damn! I'll not shave for 5 days, then!

There are some pubs nearby - I know coz I went to the venue in July - just to read the sad little cancellation message on the doors of the apollo. I then immediately knocked back 3 pints in some nearby pub. Man, I was down, down, down...

Still don't know if my wife is going to make this concert, so perhaps I'll spend some time in the afternoon trying to sell a ticket.
