Title: Blood Diamond (2006)
Post by: The Firecracker on December 05, 2006, 07:20:28 PM
What the hell kinda accent is Dicaprio trying to pull of here? I couldn't even sit through the trailer without constantly thinking about that uproariously bad accent. It was so distracting!

Bad accent or not, Blood Diamond is getting some excellent early reviews.  I guess its DiCaprio trying to mature as an actor by going against type, just like he did in Scorcese's The Departed.

I don't know... I must admit, I don't see anything bad on it. Maybe because you can hear much worse accents in English lessons. ;)

serious roles? Isn't this a silly action flick?

I don't think it is an action flick.  It sounds like there's a pretty good story with all of the action.  Going off of Ed Zwick's historical movie background, Glory and Last Samurai, I'm encouraged for Blood Diamond.  Richard Roeper even said it is one of the best movies of the year.

Yeah, Lenny DiC3PO's accent in the trailer is so bad that I knew immediately I couldn't sit through a whole movie of it. The best thing is to wait for the DVD and hope there's a foreign dub or something. Amazing that marketing would actually let us hear how bad it is before we bought our tickets!

Blood Diamond - This movie struck me as somewhat contradictory. On the one hand, it has a very interesting and not-very-well-known political context that is alone worth watching the film for. On the other, it's pretty much a formula action movie with an interesting context/backdrop. You can tell what's going to happen from a mile away, and there really aren't any surprises plotwise - particularly with Leo DiCaprio's character (and I didn't have too big of a problem with his accent). Djimon Honsou and Jennifer Connelly were very good despite playing very two-dimensional characters. I'll give it a 7/10 since I was entertained.
