Title: Return of the Seven (1966)
Post by: titoli on January 18, 2007, 05:16:07 PM
Not quite bad as the original, but without those 2-3 great moments which made the first one worth watching. And of course the cast is not stellar one of the first. Still this have some points over the other one: it is shot in Spain and not in the swiss Alps, doesn't have any mawkish man-woman dialogue, the narrative rhythm is faster. Good performances by the mexicans and spanish, less for the gringos. The score is the one reason this series was so famous and here it is proved beyond objection.

I enjoyed the third film the best and it seems to have had a higher budget than the second film. There is an embarrasing shot in RETURN OF...when the group are first riding off together and the film crew is seen silouetted against a building.

Good authentic-looking scenery. Being filmed in Spain as you say helps the film. And the music is good. But I found it generally a bit heavy going.

I was going to turn off the bull fighting scene. As I get a bit squeamish about such scenes. But no need to worry. There's so no sight of any bull before or after the so-called killing. I laughed.

The original was actually pretty good until they got to the climatic fight scene.  You had a movie full of bluster and then they bust out with cap guns.  Sam Peckinpah made The Wild Bunch partially as a response to it...
