Title: Jesus Camp
Post by: pixelated on February 19, 2007, 12:05:55 AM
anyone else seen this..?

"A growing number of Evangelical Christians believe there is a revival underway in America that requires Christian youth to assume leadership roles in advocating the causes of their religious movement. This documentary, directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, directors of the critically acclaimed THE BOYS OF BARAKA, follows Levi, Rachael, and Tory to Pastor Becky Fischer's "Kids on Fire" summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota, where kids as young as 6 years-old are taught to become dedicated Christian soldiers in "God's army."

This riveting Oscar-nominated documentary offers an unfiltered look at a revivalist subculture where devout Christian youngsters are being primed to deliver the fundamentalist community's religious and political messages. Building an evangelical army of tomorrow, the Kids on Fire summer camp in Devil's Lake, N.D., is dedicated to deepening the preteens' spirituality and sowing the seeds of political activism as they're exhorted to "take back America for Christ."  "

well, i just watched Jesus Camp.. and i'm pretty unsettled right now.

the contents of the film were enough alone to disturb me.. i was not aware that a good sized chunk of the film, including the intro, was filmed in my hometown and at the church i went to growing up. i've experienced a lot of what is going on in this movie throughout my life, until i moved out, although not as extreme. had no idea this film would be hitting so close to home though.

anyway, strongly recommend this film. it completely drives home the impact this movement is having on our government right now

the leader of the camp in this movie, even states she would like to see children in this country as passionate as the children being trained as militant extremists in other countries

i'm going to go try to unfuck my head now

Peacemaker - It's been doing a good job in the past several years >:(

Really? I don't think so.

Organized religion is just like a dictatorship. It tries to shield us from the truth.

Besides, isn't religion suppose to teach us to love one another and tolerate different beliefs instead of killing others in the name of that religion?

It's supposed to be a lot of things, but quite often the teachings are bent to the parishioners will or misquided/warped views of what's right and wrong.

For some, religion can be a useful tool to overcome the many hardships life is Bound to offer. For others it becomes a sickening addiction, completely overshadowing the true joys of life. Often the latter comes equipped with the makings for horrific and deadly results.

Also, religion smells funny and its mother is said to be of a promiscuous nature.

The bible should be a book for people to learn how to respect others and live in peace, regardless of how unbelievable the stories may be.

Unfortunately, power-hungry people have manipulated it to meet their own personal agendas.

I see the Bible as a fairy tale.

It's an interesting read, but laden with holes. At best it's a man made depiction of second hand "knowledge", even if it were rooted in fact, the true happenings of the events therein have long since been muddled and twisted until essentially lost. If there is some higher being above us, there is no book which explains it.

Not trying to come off as hostel whatsoever, just stating an opinion. Now the countless number of those who've been slaughtered in the name of religion, now that's hostel.

i can remember getting a a swift browbeating from my family for so much as paying one dollar for a record. and there's that phrase get w/ christian people. i like proverbs as it's a self help deal ...up to a point. but after making myself watch mel gibson's passion of christ i won't  go near this film. i just guess i'm as set in my ways as they are.

surrender my life to the lord ? hey man, i may pray every night  for god to stop this madness, but the buck stops here, in my wallet. think of all the soldiers who fought for freedom who wern't christians. they died on omaha and juno beaches on D-DAY. the're in hell now ? bibles don't kill people. religion does. i've read about this jesus camp in time magazine. scared th bejusus out of me. i've got friends in low places but even we draw the line down to good vs. evil. ain't no heaven. ain't no hell, as john lee hooker said. i'm a disciple of the blues. i may keep an open bible in my house, but i also keep an open mind. i made some deals w/ god when i was young. before viet nam. before richard nixion. before JFK, RFK, MLK. before the mansion family, before altamont.  one of my best buddies in music "root boy slim" used to belong to a frat HOUSE  accross the street from george w. bush. " what a bunch of skull and cross bones stuffed shirts."

here's slim to preach now :  O0

do you beleive ray charles is in hell ? john lennon ? "no man hath greater love than to lay down his life up for another."  i suggest we replace the 10 commandments w/ the 10 suggestions. you get one life. you wanna blow it ? be my guest pal. "me ? i'm w/ him" !  tuco pointing to blondie.  ;) w/ a brother like tuco's he ought to know. i get ANY sass back on this ?  you'll have amanda b. deltwith on your hands.
