Title: Il buono .... MEMORABILIA
Post by: mike siegel on May 15, 2007, 08:12:26 AM
I try to start a series of new topic. Maybe for each film if you guys appreciate it - let me know.
I'm very much into collecting for almost 30 years now and think that some would like to see how the films were promoted around the world. This topic then might also serve as reference to complete collections here and there.
For ex. I'd love to see the complete set of US 8x10 Color stills (mini Lobby cards). Or Spanish LC's from the 1st release (do they exist? I only know the ones from the 70's).

So for the start here's the German set of 25 LC's. Very hard to find. In its entirety impossible anyway, since those big German sets of handtinted glossy stills nobody sells complete (first not many HAVE a complete set, 2nd it just would be too expensive). Took me 20 years to get them all together. Even though the Poncho has the wrong color I love them. They're real heavy photos handcolored and then sealed glossy. German distributors spend a lot on those sets in the 50's and 60's and because of that did not print that many of course (more or less 70-100 sets. Most were destroyed as 'our' National Screen Service didn't store them for years and decades. For rereleases new and chaeper ones were printed and those first rate memorabilias became scarce).

The German title falls back to Leone's original one: Two Magnificent Rogues

How about this set. Don't know how old or how complete?

Good to have.
It is complete.
Italian re-release Bustas from the mid 70's (belongs to the CASARO artwork poster, where they all stand next to each each other).

US cards...looks like there might be 8.

Here they are larger in order (minus two) but I added the image of the missing pair

Do you have the one on the upper left? That one is really expensive.
So those are two first release 2-foglios (100x140cm), a re-release 2-foglio, a first release locandina (insert) and another re-release 2-foglio (altogether there are about six different Italian 2-foglios).

Then there's the large (120x160, many reprints around!) and the small (60x80) French ones.
And the two nice Spanish first-releases. In the middle a Mexican LC.

In a few weeks we have the whole world assembled here :)

Here's half of the Spanish RR-set (I guess it is a set of 8 or 12). Anybody ever saw first release LC's from Spain??

And here is set A (six cards) & B (5 cards) from France. There's probably a set C around which would bring the set to 16 LC's. Can anybody confirm that?

I'll replaced it with a better pic soon.

Don't own any of those, just adding to your topic post. Here are some more I forgot to add.

We're closin'in :)

There's the Casaro 2-foglio which came with the six 'green' photo-bustas in the mid-sixties, the red one is a 4-foglio (200x140cm), probably early 70's. The glorious japanese 2-sheet door panel and a thai(?) poster I never saw. Cool.

Here's the German which unlike the great set isn't spectaculer, and the US 1-sheet:

eh, Amigo, that's a great!

The Danish I never saw. Next to it on the right is a 'Soggeto', those are the Italian 2-sheet Photo-bustas (100x70cm).
Probably 3-5 of those exist. THey came with the four Photo-bustas you asked about. I don't have any of those, they're very hard to get and even in Italy really expensive. I suppose a set of 12 or 10 (plus those soggetos). We're talking first release here.

The UK Quad is a re-release. To proof myself, the I'm able to let go things, I gave away the first release 10 years ago to a far- away buddy of mine. Stupid Mike :). So I don't have a scan, but it is much better - in color..

The LO MALO.. is an Argentinian one.
There's also the US half sheet (22x28inch).
The Lobby Cards aren't bad but reversed angles!
The TENDERNESS I don't know. South Africa? Australia?

Great pictures guys.  Here's the Japanese poster. Note the title in English has the literal translation...Good Ugly Bad. The Clint face shot is actually taken from FAFDM and the gun is added.

Oh I get it.... the idea of these lobby cards, as with the german ones, was to say "We'll show you photos from the film showing all the main scenes and story from the film so we can spoil it for you just before you go into the theater". I mean that last one showing Angel Eyes being blown away...whats all that about......its so half way through the film you can think to yourself...Oh I know whats gonna happen These three are gonna fight it out for the gold and one of the other two kills Angel Eyes and then Blondie's gonna hang Tuco.........WELL!!!! am I right?

A little off topic, but can anybody confirm whether the new spanish book on Eli Wallach has rare unpublished GBU photos, (and maybe how many) as stated in this month's cinema retro (which I know Mike S writes for....) I'm thinking of buying the book just for the pics (don't speak/read spanish)...

Posters: Australian re-release and first release. Great one.

Book: I'm supposed to get it later in June so I'll gladly scan you the pics. Not many, just a couple and not in great
'reproduceable' quality... Guess I saw one already here in the forum..

Do you mean this book by Carlos Aguilar's wife/partner Anita Haas (a biography on Eli Walalch in Spanish):

http://garringo.cool.ne.jp/book.htm

I have this book but, as far as I can remember, there are not any rare GBU stills.

I scanned 3 of the GBU rare stills from the Haas book on the rare photos thread on Gen discussion. Page 22 if you want to check them there. There is one more from GBU showing Blondie and Tuco arriving at the shelled building (where they get the note from Angel Eyes). Not that many but i hadn't seen these 4 GBU ones anywhere else. Theres a few photos from his other Spaghettis and all his other films of course.

Thanks again, Le Bon, should have known you would have already contributed these! They're great shots, are they in really nice quality within the book itself?

Maybe someone can help me with a collector's problem:

I'm trying to complete my French GBU Lobby Card - set. Unfortunately
I could never find out how many stills the sets had. There are two different
prints which included the same shots. The first set from 1966 has bigger credits / writing,
while the second (70's) has smaller in the white bottom area. I posted Set A (6 cards) & B (5 cards)
I have posted my sets from the 70's one Page 1 in the upper third.

Of the old cards I have 10 with one card which is not in the 70's set A & B.

So has the 70's set an additional Set C with another 5 cards which then comes to 16?

And how about the 60's set? Any ideas about the number?

'hope to find some serious collectors here, they MUST be somewhere :)

OK, so why do the two bottom "Zwei Glorreiche Halunken" cards show stills from "For a Few Dollars More" ?

Is this an intentional/unintentional screw up, like during the tiltles of "Goldfinger" all the scenes are from the film except a clip of the helicopter scene from "From Russia with Love" ?

Anyways, great stuff !

On the German Dr.NO rr-poster from 1968 is an image from FROM RUSSIA...
Promo department have their ups and downs. Check the GIU LA TRSTA thread I just opened.
THE HUNTING PARTY is on the rr-set printing the same year this GBU-set was printed. And
I love the half tracks and tanks on the Turkish poster :)

Hi guys,
I have always wondered where the picture of TUCO dressed in mexican garb swinging the rifle, comes from on the front of the GBU soundtrack and on some of the posters. The one about "for three men the cival war wasn't hell it was practice" .
They actually look like drawings of pictures...though colours wrong, and dont remember Angel eyes in blue trousers... etc....Well just looking at some of the photos in this memorabilia thread, there is one of TUCO where he threatens to hit Blondie with a spade in the cemetery..the German photos I think. The stance and position look exactley like the one on the poster. So I reckon they have taken that photo and edited it, drawing him in mexican dress and changing the shovel for a rifle. Why I dont know?....maybe more colourful
The only time I remember TUCO in this dress is the Siccorro scene, when he is in the cave, and when he chases and catches Blondie, I dont remember him swinging a rifle. Any thoughts, am I off track here? :-\ :-\

Probably just the artist modifying what he/she has seen in production stills. I'm pretty sure the drawings of Blondie and AE are also not found anywhere in the film. AE with a rifle in union garb??

Yeah....it looks like Blondie is firing the cannon, but he doesn't have the poncho on at that moment in the film...so it must be from a still somewhere..

Very interesting that GBU sheets in picture 4 and picture 5 (and maybe others, didn't look that close) show Van Cleef as Mortimer.  #4 shows Indio dead on the ground, and #5 definitely is in Mortimer outfit in its top photo.

The picture of Clint on the horse from that set is from FAFDM as well. I think with re-issues they probably just had a bunch of stills from both movies and someone wasn't paying that much attention. It's funny how much younger Angel eyes looks, must be the sideburns.

The real poncho is greenish-brown, depending upon which part and which side you view.  And the sun has bleached it.  I saw it at the L.A. Autry Leone exhibit, Clint has it, loaned it to the exhibit.
