Title: Leone's First Film
Post by: The Peacemaker on June 29, 2007, 10:36:31 PM
So, we finally have a new board. Wanted to be the first one to post here.

To anyone who's seen the film, can any of Leone's future trademarks be seen in Colossus of Rhodes?

Wow! This is great seeing this Thread up and running! I have yet to see the film though. I'm going to order it this week. I'm sure I'll have a lot to talk about after I see it. Stay tuned...

The only thing I like in the movie is the Colossus itself.

This is quite a historic moment for the board.
It's the first time the format has been changed since november 2002!
It's our first foray into refurbishing the board.

MMM! Looks good! In big screen it would work, I think...

I will swear that the Colossus is destroyed at the end...  >:D

I posted this in the thread linked above, but since it is easily reposted, I place it here as well.

Frank backs away. Has he won?

Frank turns, revealing a mortal wound.

I liked the film a lot. Saw it at a Leone retrospective in Queens, N.Y. back
in '99 - which at the time was pretty much the only place to see it.

I picked it up on Tuesday at SunCoast Video, for $9.99.

Just from the trailer I can see that one Leone trademark is in the movie; epic sweep!   O0

That trailer is hilarious, giving away vital plot points and misrepresenting others (what was that about devil worshipers?). Still, they do a good job of selling the thing. You'd never know from the trailer just how slack-paced the movie is....

Frayling tells us that that "orgy" was choreographed by Carla Ranalli (aka Mrs. Leone)!

I tried to start another thread about the name of this section, but for some reason it didn't take. So I guess I'll ask my question here: why is this section called Colossus of Rhodes when the correct English title of the film is The Colossus of Rhodes?

Instead of pointing it out here (we have no power) send a pm to CAL. He is the only one who can change the title.

I'll do the same.

Something funny i read about this movie...

it seems Leone's way of expressing his accomplishment was saying that he made the movie to .."pay for his honeymoon.."

i take it he wasn't very satisfied with it after all.

I don't think he ever cared about Peplum films.

Plus, it doesn't have the Leone trademarks that made him great, except for the epic sweep.

I rented it, never watched it, and returned it for some other movie.

I bought this DVD just for the Leone name, I saw the movie for the first time and I couldn't relate it to Leone's future works, but then I turned on Sir Christopher Frayling commentary and I could appreciate the film in a different light, of course it's very hard to think that the person who directed Colossus, was the same who directed FOD 3 years later, but Mr. Frayling does a good job trying to establish some links between Colossus and Leone's future work. It's interesting, but still this is my 7th favorite Leone movie (the least favorite).

well, he had to start and end somewhere...

Interstingly enough, if Leone's lifetime work had been a book, people would've judged it harshly by its cover... kinds like they do already.  All his best work found are beyond the first one (the cover of the book).
