Title: Sanjuro (1962)
Post by: The Firecracker on July 09, 2007, 04:00:07 AM
Viewed this last night and preferred it to the rather draggy "Yojimbo".
Great film. Wonderfully balances comedy with action.
Superb ending showdown! (which I also prefer to Yojimbo's lazy climax).
Watching Mifune's comic performance here makes me wonder if Tony Anthony was channeling him during the filming of his westerns. He makes the same exaggerated expressions and has the same funny way of speaking.

Thar she blows! Hehe. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment, Firecracker. Sanjuro is definitely better than Yojimbo.

I like Yojimbo better.  I'd give Sanjuro an 8/10.

More of a Yojimbo fan myself as well, his playing of both sides is masterfully done and a pleasure to watch.

I never found Yojimbo to be draggy, and in fact preferred it to FoD. That's just me of course. What'd you like more about this?

I agree, Yojimbo is better (than Sanjuro and FoD).  I think it's marvelously acted and photographed, the music is great too.

I haven't seen all of Sanjuro, but what I saw didn't impress me as much as Yojimbo. Except the slow mo blood explosion. That was great.

Remake? WHY? Why top remake all the good movies?

This is an excellent humorous samurai film. And men, who the hell could be better than Mifune and Nakadai? Not to mention who could direct better than the Master...

Tried this 3 times and first two got to sleep thirtyish minutes before the end. It has 2 or 3 good scenes. But it drags and most of the time it is ridiculous: expecially the infamous last scene.  Mifune though is very great: the way he disposes of a dozen villains is tremendous. 5\10

A very amusing film. The last scene is one of my all-time favorites. Thar she blows! O0

Your point is what, exactly? That you don't have a sense of humor? But Don Titoli, we've known that all along.

I wonder what kind of a movie it would've been if Leone re-made this too.

It would have starred Terrence Hill.

I thought that was pretty cool but I have to admit it is ridiculous, my first reaction to it was "wtf? this guy's body is like a fizzy drink"
