Title: Deathly Hallows SPOILERS (only who read it come!)
Post by: Jill on July 28, 2007, 02:25:33 AM
Also, I've finished it. Anyone else read it? We can speek about the plot.  ;)

My first feeling is:  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( for my favourite charakter (not for Potter, I hate that little bastard  ;D and hate his SOB father too...).
But HE...  :'(
Oh poor man. He was a real hero...
But He goes to the Heaven. (Like Working Class... um, that's another tale. ;D)

Well, my initial reaction was, "Wow, all those spoilers I heard were such complete bullshit."

And I agree that "He" was the best character of the series.  By like... a million miles.

Agreed, Snape was the best.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Harry? He's just so bland. Too much of a boy scout.

When I said "good" I meant he was good in contrast to evil. He never was evil, just made bad choices, it was his love for Lily is what turned him over to the good side.

And you'd be suprised how many people don't like Harry Potter even though they read the books, I don't understand why people don't like the main character, I actually thought he was a well developed character. And a boy scout? Did you catch the part where he tortured that Death Eater? He has acted out many time on anger. Rowling herself says he is not a saint.

I started read it for Snape, Lucius, Remus, Sirius and other male charakters... (I found a lot of fanfics about them, and I wanted to know who these men with strange names are...  ;D)

I'm disappointed Lucius survived...  :( And poor Lupin and Tonks died. Not to mention Fred...  :'( I think Jo watched too much SWs, especially from TSG type, but not enough.

I don't like Harry very much, but I respect him. He's not a superhero, but he's really brave and in the end he became a Man.

But if I wrote it, the final duel were like so:

Harry and the Dark Lord standing like two SW charakters before the final duel, and then would came a lot of flashbacks... and at the end one curse. Voldy dies.
At the very end: Harry watches the bodies of Death Eaters, and he counts: '10,000 Galleons... 15,000... 17,000... 20,000... 22,000...'
(Lucius tried to curse him in the back, but he's faster)
'27,000... All right now.'

Haha, and I believe it was you who wrote your own version of the beginning of Deathly Hallows, taking ideas from Harmonica's intro at the train station. You should write a fan ficition based on spaghetti westerns.

Yeah I was disapointed when Lucius survived, but he pretty much give up being a Death Eater when he found out Voldemort was going to kill his son, plus his wife helped Harry out in the end.

I was thinking how sweet would it be if Ennio Morricone composed for the movie, that would be super sweet.

I didn't.
The epilogue felt tacked on and cliched.

And what parent, in their right mind, would send their kids off to the most dangerous place in the world?
Did they learn nothing for seven years?

It's not dangerous anymore now that the villian is dead. That was the point of the epilogue, to show everyone who survived has moved on.

"all was well" just means no more Voldemort. Even though they are living a good life, they still have suffered many losses. It also rules out any possiblity of another book.

Yeah the series ended just the way they should. Jo herself says she's done with "Harry Potter" though she will write an encyclopedia for any more loose ends.

I guess I stand alone being a Harry Potter fan though. Oh well ;)

Yeah, Voldy is dead, and the world became boring.  ;D

And when Teddy maries Victoire, the child will be a werewolf-metamorph mage-veela? Uhh. Just imagine, when he/she's in wolf form, will have nice silvery blonde hair, which changes itself to pink or to blue in every moment...

Yeah.  I thought Harry would die.  "Happily Ever After" has been used to death.  I also think that some of the locations for the horcruxes were lame.  If Voldy hadn't made the location of each horcrux so obvious, he'd be alive.  Why not make a rock a horcrux and throw it into the sea? Better yet, a lake. Even better would be under some random dude's grave. Like in GBU.  You think some one with years experience in dark magic would think up a good location. Oh, well.

Yeah you can tell the author conveinently placed them in areas they were easy to get to just to get everything wrapped up within the year it takes place in (which strangely, according to the Potter's grave stones, takes place in 1997!?).
In reality, a hunt like that would have taken years.

No apparently I didn't. Voldy hid ANOTHER horcrux in the chamber of secrets. I say "ANOTHER" because there was another Horcrux in the Chamber earlier in the series. Which means he hid two in the same place.

But I must be wrong because I "didn't" read the book

The lake was the best hiding place ever, and The Chamber of Secrets is close. Speaking of The Chamber, Ron speaking Parseltongue was stupid. No excuse, just stupid. The Room of Requirement is not a good place. If I were Voldemort, I'd keep it in the Albanian forest. I'm not completely disappointed with the book, though.

Yeah but to hide two there is just stupid.

And Ron was an annoying git the whole book.

Ron was just copying what he heard Harry say to the locket. And why would Voldemort put them in Albania? He wanted to put them in place that meant something to him.

No, they found the fang from the skull of a dead Basilisk in the Chamber, the Horcrux they used it on was found at the Malfoy vault.

Yeah, I still can't get past how he could speak Parseltongue. They should've had it so that Hermione was possesed, then Ron screams "NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO", then he crushes the cup with his foot. It would go along with how love is the greatest magic of all. lol, that's actually pretty stupid.

If that's so then I must be getting confused with the locations because I know that he did hide two Horcruxs in HOGWARTS. Which is just as dumb.

Again. A quick ploy to get the timeline to finish within a year just we can have the nauseatingly jolly ending where everything has been "well" for many years.

I just explained it, Ron was imitating Harry when he opened the locket. He just remembers the words.

Using a foot to crush the cup won't destory the soul.

And love just the magic Voldemort never knew because he never had loved or been loved, he was a sick and twisted psychopath who grew more wicked when he split his soul after murdering so many people.

No the Diary was owned at the Malfoy manner the whole time, but Lucius decided to hide it in Ginny Weasley's cauldron so he can discredit her father. Voldey was pissed when he found out about his diary being destoryed.

Certainly not. The series is by far the best thing to come out of literature in a long time. In fact, now that the series is over, America can stop reading again.

The series had it's bumps (The entirety of the 5th book, parts of the second, a good portion of the 6th and mis-steps in the last) but overrall it is a good fantasy story.

correct, but that doesn't stop the glaring errors on the pages.

Or the fact that you have only read each book once when they were released, you have little memory of what's going on. Maybe you should read them again, I doubt you will, you seem to have too much pride in your negative opinion.

At least you are saying something that's not negative.

Is this IMDB (It's been certainly turning into it as of late) ?

I can express a negative opinion without people jumping down my throat right?
I didn't like the ending. I didn't like some of the lazy solutions to problems.
Deal with it.
The book, like the series and like ALL series, has it's flaws.

and what would you call your devotion to the series?
You can't bare to listen anybody who sites it's faults.

Here is a massive one...

CHO CHANG. For three books Harry's feelings for her were hyped up to the extreme. When they finally came together in the 5th book, Rowling provides the ultimate anti-climax.
Their first date, asexual Harry blows it.
Chang is virtually never heard from again for the rest of the series.

Again I don't hold any "pride" on an opinion of a series I'm not overly fanatical about. I said a few negative, and true, comments and you got overly steamed.
Calm down. It's paper.

Silly man, Harry only blows his date with Cho Chang because he was tactless. She was still crying about her dead ex-boyfriend and Harry doesn't want to hear any of it. The reason she was never heard of again because her best friend rat out the DA and Harry thought she deserved the jinx on her face, which Hermione has conjured when the members were signing up for the DA. Anyone who is a traitor will get acne across the face spelling "SNEAK" and Cho thought this was rude, and Harry thought it was brilliant, and Cho thinking Harry likes Hermione better storms off and never speaks to him again.

Yeah that's why I wrote this...

"The series had it's bumps (The entirety of the 5th book, parts of the second, a good portion of the 6th and mis-steps in the last) but overrall it is a good fantasy story".

By the way, mirroring is a good tactic on IMDB but here it's kinda stale.

1st: Good all around
2nd: Good all around
3rd: Good all around
4th: Perfect (arguably the best)
5th:Awful
6th:Ok (great finale!)*
7th:Slightly above average

* First half is like the 5th book which was dull and uninspired.
The last half really picks up and the ending is the best of the series.

What does everybody have against the Fifth book?

I presonally didn't like the first two.  Can't remember the third, really, but the last half of the series was darker, and better.  The series as a whole was good, but flawed.  I didn't mind the ending, but the epilogue was awful.

I started, but I accidentally closed it instead of minimizing when I was halfway through the video (had to eat dinner, y'know).

My theory (well, what I wanted to happen) was that Harry would be one of the horcruxes, so the only way he could defeat voldemort would be to kill himself.

What was his?

Think it should be left as is.
With her not willing to make a sequel or spin-off, she will be reduced to making books for learning magical creature language like troll language (Kevin must excel on this! ;D) and others.
Much like Tolkein I suspect.
Could be wrong though, she might pull something else out of the hat.

Well you have the upcoming movies to look forward to. Not sure if your a fan of those. Personally I think everything after 2 can only be enjoyed by those who have read the books.

Maybe the 4th film is the exception. It came close to being a stand alone flick.

The movies are not great, though in they are going into a better direction, making them more character driven instead of wasting their time with putting in as much subplot as possible, dumbing them down, and the result is a family film full of two dementional characters.

But there will be a book that will tie up any loose end that happened after book 7, she actualy answered alot of unanswered questions.

What was his?

He says the final horcrux is Harry's scar. Harry attempts to commit suicide so Vomit-man can perish but Snape explains to Harry that he can remove the Horcrux but it will cost Potter's magical powers/abilities.

Horcrux is removed, Voldy dies and Harry is reduced to forever be a muggle.

Good twist. I like this ending better.

Still the best way, IMO.

The way she ended it was fine.  As soon as I found about the power of the "Deathly Hallows" I knew what the ending would be.  But that's more than halfway through the book.  So my ending wasn't any more predictable than hers, because I got half of it right, and she made it obvious what the other half was.

I have to go with FC on the Cho deal.  I don't know why they would amp that up for so long just to have it fall flat on its face after one date.  Maybe I've forgotten something.  Or maybe they did that to be more realistic.  But considering the series, I think realism was the last thing on Rowling's mind.

Well the reason behind Cho Chang, is key to Harry's character development.

Cho Chang was a popular girl, athletic, lots of friends, and very pretty. That's the first thing Harry notices about her, and was why he was crushing on her. But despite being famous for being the boy who lived, he couldn't ask a girl out. In OOTP, when Cho takes interest in him, since he was the last person ever to talk to Cedric Diggory her ex, he was in a compartment with friends, Neville, Ginny, and newly introduced, Luna Lovegood. Ginny is cool, but Neville and Luna are very unpopular, and when Cho walked into talk to him, he wished he was in a compartment with cooler kids. After months of chasing after Cho, finally kissing her, they dated briefly and because Cho was confused about her feelings for Harry, getting over her ex's death, and her jealous of his friend Hermione, and Harry's inexperience with girls, the relationship never worked out.

The next year, Harry is again in a compartment with Neville and Luna, only this time he is asked to join a group of girls so he won't have to sit with them. But Harry declines feeling Neville and Luna who aided him in a battle against Death Eaters and Voldemort last year, feeling he is already with the cool kids.  This is in complete contrast with how he felt when Cho saw him last year in the same spot.

First girlfriends didn't always work out, Jo wanted Harry's first kiss to be with someone he will not end up being with, the girl she has planned on Harry to fall in love with was Ginny Weasley. And that's the point of Cho, Harry's character development.

1.And you shouldn't it up.

2.If you wanted me to apologize to you, instead of acting like a dick, I would have done so. But now you pulled this crap so now you owe me one as well.

1. I don't know what that means

2. If you assumed that I wanted you to apologise to me then why didn't you do it in the first place instead of acting like a loon?

And the only thing I "owe" to anybody on here is a few dvds which will be sent in the mail shortly.

I wasn't paying much attention, and I thought you'd let it go. But if it really bothered you just confront me about it. I don't pay attention to every single post you make. So come on, PM me and we'll talk about it.

So Rowling says Dumbledore's gay. Interesting note. Bad timing, though. I posted on the ongoing argument. My screen name there's John G. a reference to the mysterious murderer from Memento. Don't ask me why I chose it. I just didn't want to give a real name.

I've been dieing to read this tread... but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting (pretty fun though).

I agree with almost everything FC said. Plus I thought the dream kind of thing (the discussion with Dumbledore) when Harry should have died was soooo stupid and cliched. And it felt like Rowling was on purpose showing all the dark sides of Dumbledore because she suddenly noticed how saint-like character he was. I have mixed feelings about the epilogue... I do care who made kids with whom etc. because I cared for many of the characters. But the way it was written somehow turned me off. That being said, I cried in the end. This was I think the second book that has ever made me cry (the other being LotR, on both readings). But I think it had more to do with the fact that the series was coming to end than the way it ended.

I've been meaning to erase my stupid comments but now that Kevin has left I don't think it would be a good idea to leave his side of the arguement floating there without my posts.

I forgot to say I knew Snape had killed Dumbledore upon Dumbledore's request right after finishing the sixth book.
