Title: About the Dubbing............
Post by: archangel on August 07, 2007, 10:39:15 AM
hi guys,
just laid down for three hours in the studio and put "West" thru the system.
made a point of not watching the visuals. just listened to the soundtrack.
Fonda, Bronson, and Robards did their own voices, for sure, no question.
CC DID NOT. even the ambience around the voice is different to the others.
if you guy stop perving on Claudia (impossible, i know) and LISTEN only, it's obvious.
the voice-over was done by a pro whose hubby was a major voice over guy there at the time. he got her in, the production team must have been pushed by budget problems, because she does sound FAKE.

what a great soundtrack! EM was into avante-guard music at that time, and this creeps into the proceeding all the time.
there are bits that COULD be sound effects or, they might just be musical instruments. very hard to say.
for a movie this old the sound design IS truely wonderful.
the bits i liked the best weren't the obvious well known cues but the subtle bits that blend in with the natural sounds/
very artfully done.
and very entertaining.
this little exercise just increased my respect for the people who made this wonderful art. (pretty hard, as it was already 100%, anyway.)

side note, OT:
Eastwood voice in GBU, was dubbed by himself, as we all know.
but what you might not know is:
it was done in America, New York, i think, and has a totally different sound to the italian dubs.
a lot of the other dubs have some "air" in them. iow, the mic was a coupla feet away from the artist.
in CE's case, he has been close mic'd, within 6inches. this has a more intimate effect, and i think it was intentional in this case.
it gives Blondie a sort of omnipotent feel, befitting his statis as a messenger from God (Gabriel).
this is hard to pick up sometimes, as the atmospheric elements mask the effect. (which they should do.)
best, archie. O0

If I had to guess, I'd say sound/music people rather than filmmaker.

yep, i'm a sound guy.
been doin' it now for some 45yrs.
since 15yrs old.
i hope this info clears up some issues.
i'm a huge fan of SL and EM and just about anyone connected with these great movies.
while it is not a hard thing to copy EM music style, it's extremely hard to come up with such interesting and long lived art as Ennio has achieved.
Bravo to all,
