An Oscar that was given to him years to late. This man should have at least 10 in my humble opinion.

He always looks so intense in his pictures. I love his glasses though. O0

Yeah, he does have an intense look about him. You rarely see him smile. It seems like he's always hard at work in his mind.
-
It seems like he's always hard at work in his mind.
Absolutely.
Only time I met him personally was before a concert (not directed by him) of his terrible "serious" music in Rome (I abandoned the music hall after the first half). I spoke with him about the way he spent his nights and had a very peculiar answer: he did jogging in his enormous apartment about 3-4 o'clock a.m. This was in the late '80's, I don't know if he still does it. Anyway while talking to him about this innocuos matter he emanated a more relaxed impression about him, though I think he was anxious about the concert as he at the time used to consider his serious music as his only real musical output (I think he has a more fair view of his cinema and pop work now, though).
-
titoli, i'm not familiar with his "serious" music. How would you describe it? You found it too abstract or avant garde?
-
I heard one concert on tv of this stuff and that half concert live around the same time. It is of the experimantal kind, though he didn't make use of electronic instruments (he dabbled in electronics in the '60's and, thank god, brought the experience in his non-serious music). I rememeber a piece called "Pezzi for piano e forte" where he experimented with the piano's dynamic: but melody was absent or imperceptible, more like a series of chords (usually with many dissonanze) and pauses (I saw this twenty years ago so I can't describe it better). I remember the first piece at the live concert was for two (or four?) double basses along the same lines.
-
I see. Thank you. Sounds quite experimental. There wouldn't be any similarities or traces of the things that one might love in his orchestrations for cinema.
-
Absolutely. That was what kept me amazed: all his qualities as a tonal composer were completely absent or, if not, I didn't perceive them.
-
Great stuff titoli! Thanks for sharing your experiences with Ennio. You're so incredibly lucky to have not only met him, but spoken to him as well! That's amazing.

It's true. No man on earth puts this kind of talent out there without being a gift from god! :)

It was more nodding than laughing. We don't have a nodding smiley here...

Aptly said TB. His musical talent is not of this world. His music is able to reach
deep down in one's soul and touch on emotions you never were aware of. O0

Nice photo. He is actually smiling quite broadly. He really did appreciate
receiving his Oscar, God bless him.

Yeah, he was in tears during his speech. Good for him! It was way overdue that Oscar. I think this is one of the few pictures I've ever seen him smile.
-
I was glued to the tv during his acceptance speech. Even
though he is in his 70's I think he is going to be around for a while.
He has that feisty quality that you see in people who live to a ripe
old age.

I know a lot of people don't like Tarantino, but if he gets his war film Inglorious Bastards off the ground, I hope he gets Ennio to compose.
-
Agreed. That would be a huge coup for Tarantino and the film.

He's used some Ennio music in his past films, but they were old tracks. I'd like to see some new composed music by him.
-
We can only wait and hope.

That'd be cool. In fact you never know, people might take him more seriously, just because of a good soundtrack! I can't imagine GBU without the score. Then again I can sort of imagine The Godfather with the score of GBU. Imagine this:
SPOILERS
Mike shoots Solozzo and the cop at the Italian restaurant. Instead of playing a variation of the main theme, the audience hears "EHHUH EHHUH EHHHHH, WWAAAAA WWAAAAA WWAAAAA".
:(. Sorry if this seems off topic, 'cause it is.

So he played the owl in Twin Peaks?
Honestly, that pic is creepy.

'just found some reference pictures of my Leone / Terence Hill / Morricone (western only) soundtracks. A bit off-topic maybe,
but here they are anyway.
