Title: Possible 210 minute cut of OUATITW?
Post by: T.H. on April 23, 2008, 08:01:17 AM
from Wiki of all places  :D

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) - Recut by Paramount from 165 minutes to 145 minutes for U.S. release, restored in 1984. 168 minute and 171 minute versions exist in Italy, and a three-and-a-half hour cut is rumored to exist, with James Woods claiming to have seen it at the Sergio Leone estate.

Maybe it's a joke, I dunno. I am very doubtful.

The key word is rumored. :D

Let's just say, hypothetically, that this version exists. If anything, it's probably an incredibly rough cut that somehow survived 40 years. Even though the validity of this is certainly in question, I thought it was thread worthy. It's interesting, I will say that.

If I had to guess I'd say this is about what James Woods said: "blah blah blah and he showed me another epic masterpiece of his, Once Upon A Time In The West - what is it, three and half hours long? - at his house when we blah blah blah" :D

I've seen this version. The extra fottage comprises mostly of a close up of Fonda's face while taking a HUGE crap. Morricone's music for it is BEAUTIFUL! Would've won an oscar if the scene wasn't cut.

Leone had planned on a wipe sequence but was too pressed for time that he wasn't able to film it.

WRONG! It was actually Cheyenne taking a dump while riding on Morton's train. Just before saving Harmonica, he had some other business to attend to... :D

I'm pretty sure he didn't bother to wipe. That's just a rumor.

Giving this topic some serious thought: I would think that any three-and-a-half hour version, if it exists at all, was probably Leone's rough cut and not something he felt was prepared for release. We know thanks to Frayling and others that there were many scenes scripted (and some of them filmed) that, if inserted into the film as is, would conflict or make redundant material in the existing cuts of the film (repetitious dialogue and plot exposition, for instance). Leone's director's cut was about 175 minutes, give or take, unless I'm mistaken, so I doubt the missing footage was material he wanted in the final film. Based on what I've read on the subject, the only deleted scenes I particularly want to see are the beating scene (maybe not put back in the film, but at least as an extra) and the confrontation between Harmonica and Morton just before Cheyenne's rescue of Harmonica ("I'm Frank's boss"/"Does Frank know that?"). The other scenes would probably be interesting as curios and little more.
