Well of course.  Ennio Morricone.  Just kidding and welcome aboard.
I used to have a harmonica but could never get the sounds right.  Gave up.
Got to admit, that harmonica sures has a haunting quality to it.  When you hear those first 2 notes, you know exactly where it came from.
You'll have to excuse my smart aleck remark.  I've watched too many Bugs Bunny cartoons.

when a man with diatonic harmonica  meets a man with a chromatic harmonica, the man with a diatonic harmonica won't stand a chance of  playing those off notes.

Diatonic- The standard 10-hole major diatonic harmonicas come in all 12 keys of music and allow you to play a complete 7-note major scale of the key of the harmonica. Many additional notes from outside the major scale can be acquired by "bending" certain draw (inhale) and blow (exhale) notes. Most professional players are predominantly diatonic players. Diatonic harmonicas are typically used in blues, rock, country, and folk, but are found in nearly all styles of music. They are sometimes referred to as a "blues harp", "harp", "short harp", or "standard 10-hole". The particular model and brand of diatonic played by your favorite pro is not important when choosing a harmonica, more importantly, learn to play like the pro and you will sound like them. If you are at all serious about learning to play, start with a good quality one. The cheaper ones leak air, are very difficult to learn to bend, and can cause no end of frustration.
Chromatic- The chromatic harmonica has a button on the side, which when NOT used, allows you to play a normal major scale in the key of the chromatic. With the button depressed, you have all the missing half-step notes in-between the major scale notes. This allows you to play in any key and any type of scale. The chromatic is typically used in jazz and classical music, but is found in all styles of music. Bending doesn't work nearly as well on the chromatic as it does on the diatonic harmonica and when used, is used more for a "bending effect". In most cases, you will be doing good to bend a note a half-step down.
Tremolo- Tremolo harmonicas are Diatonic models constructed with double holes (sometimes 8, 10, 12, or more sets of double holes), each containing two reeds tuned to the same note, one tuned slightly higher than the other. Since both reeds are either blow or draw, when played, both will sound together and the slight difference in tuning creates a vibrating or tremolo effect. The tremolo harmonicas are primarily used for special effects. They are not made to play blues, bend notes, or do anything other than play the most simple melodies. Depending upon the particular model and brand, the major scale would begin on the 3rd or 4th set of holes, and then the pattern would be the same as the diatonic major scale pattern in relation to blows and draws.
Octave Tuned- "Octave harmonicas are similar to Tremolo models in reed layout and musical range. Instead of having reeds tuned to the same note, however, each double hole has one reed tuned an octave apart from the other. The resulting sound is stronger and full bodied, but without the tremolo effect. This is the harmonica equivalent of a twelve-string guitar (sort-of)."
Special Tuned Diatonics- For players that do not play chromatic harmonica, but may have the need for additional notes and scales in their playing, they can pick up a special tuned (actually re-tuned from the standard major scale tuning) diatonic. Tunings include: natural minor scale, harmonic minor scale, major scale 2nd position tuned (Lee Oskar calls them "Melody Makers" and Hohner calls them "Country tuned"), and "high octave" (key of "G") and "low octave" (low D, Eb, E, F, and F#) tuned.
Other Types- Additional types of harmonicas are available for special purposes like harmonica trios, groups, or orchestrals. Most of these are made by the Hohner Company, but other companies may carry some as well. This group includes: bass harmonicas, chord harmonicas, Polyphonias, and miniture 4-hole harmonicas.

"Get the music in your head first. If you can't hum, sing, or whistle a riff or song, you don't have it in your head, and therefore, don't really know it yet. Once memorized, play it repeatedly."

chromatic harmonica needed. unless you want to play

I play the diatonic (blues stuff) and it reminds me that one of the most bugging things about the film is that not only is Charlie Boy not playing the harp, he's not even been shown the right notes!  His kisser's all over it!

I've just had a play about and one way to do the basics on a ten hole would be:-

Draw on 4 sliding down to a draw on 4 with bend
Draw on 4 sliding down to draw on 4 with bend (again)
Draw on 4, draw on 3 with bend, draw on 4 with bend sliding back up to draw on 4.  NO BLOWS

Another way uses hole 3 only (drawing and blowing) but involves bending the draw note quite deep making your eyes pop out.

I'm sure there's lots of ways.

I was going to make a topic to see if anyone had a tab of Harmonicas song, but I see there already is one.  Which key do you think is closes to what Harmonica plays in the movie?

I have a harmonica, but I'm pretty terrible on it. I can roughly play harmonica's theme, but not convincingly. But I also have a banjo, and I can play Cheyenne's theme. I can post tab for that if anyone wants it.

how does one  bend notes
on a harmonica ???

A diatonic harmonica has notes 'missing' but it's possible to get these notes by moving the air in a different way.  On holes 1 - 6 these missing notes are got by drawing (sucking) in a different way while on holes 7 - 10 the notes are got by blowing in a different way.  Without being next to you the only way I can describe it is it's a bit like sucking a strand of spaghetti but sucking it harder (!) as it disappears into the mouth (!!).  It's difficult to achieve at first as the muscles in the mouth required are not developed enough, but once mastered is a piece of cake.  This is also why harmonica players are deemed to be good kissers (and other things!).  It gives that mournful blues note which is similar to a baby crying or a dog howling or a steam engines whistle (remember OUATITW has railways as a central theme).  I may be wrong about a chromatic as I've never really played one, but it would be hard if not impossible to bend notes as there are to banks of notes and a button that pushes a slide across the holes to determine the note that is played or not played.  If you really want to learn, there are plenty of books that'll show you how.  It is worth it and even though I'm crap, everyone else thinks I'm relly good but they've never heard the likes of Little Walter or Sonny Boy Williamson.

I had the same problem seven years ago, when I,too, got a harmonica at Christmas and wanted to play music from OUATITW,especially Harmonica''s harmonica tune.In fact, I wanted a harmonica just because of Harmonica.  ;D

I had the music for Harmonica tune back then, but I gave up practicing pretty soon.So I never learned to play harmonica...  :)

I wanted a harmonica just because of Harmonica.  ;D

Same with me... or, actually, I got a harmonica as a small child because my older sisters each had one (very cheap ones), so I needed one, too, and when I heard that tune, I decided harmonica was so cool... but I haven't learned how to play it properly yet as well. :-[
I posted notes for the Harmonica theme (not made by me) in another thread...

Nine years ago, I also got a harmonica for Xmas. And I too wanted to learn to play the Harmonica tune for OUATITW. But I lost interest in a couple of weeks.
