Title: Watch the Fistful Italian trailer and Italian dvd outtakes reel!
Post by: Jordan Krug on March 04, 2009, 05:30:52 PM
Ordered the new Italian FOD deluxe dvd package (cause my Blu Ray player can't play the special features, only the movie) Thought I'd be a nice guy and rip a couple of the features to nice high-quality quicktimes for you all to see/save. (I doubt very much these will be ported over to North America discs). I'm hosting them on the backend of my website for now, but I'm not going to keep them up there forever, so grab em now while you can.  Also might be best to let the whole thing load before you play (they are high data rate..)

Here's the original italian trailer (pay close attention - I'm pretty sure every shot is an alternate/extended take or unused angle from those in the film). Also the Morricone music seems to be slightly different than the version in the film.

http://www.jordankrug.com/Screening_Room/leone/fistfulitaliantrailer.mov

This is another very cool supplement, starts off with alternate titles, then montages of clapperboards, extended takes, alt takes etc. I think most of the material is just trims from the takes already in the film. It's amazing to see, one only wishes there was more, (maybe not so quickly edited)  and that some of the pieces were longer :) (it might take a while to load, it's 13 min long)

http://www.jordankrug.com/Screening_Room/leone/fodaltfootage.mov

There are more supplements on the disc, most are very interesting interviews (with english subtitles available!) If you have a pal/region free compatible dvd player I recommend you pick up the set. Comes with a ton of cool paper extras as well (all in Italian though)

Enjoy!

I just watched the trailer, that's really cool. Did you notice that they often use too much of the same shot? you often see one second before Leone said "Action" or one second after he said "cut".

You're absolutely right, but thankfully the trailer cutter wasn't a great editor cause it's cool for us to see those couple of extra seconds :)

Thanks for that Jordan.  O0

Your right about the trailer...looks like all are alternate takes and the music is definitely different about half way though.
The supplement is great. I love the first gundown one where Clint is doing his poncho flip and a gust of wind hinders it and on the final shootout his gun jams and the look on his face.

Actually, it says on the disc that they restored the trailer along with the film. The supplement on the film restoration is pretty amazing too - I was right in guessing that they had re-color timed all of the night scenes. Nice to see the film treated with such respect.

Ok, there's always one pain in the arse and here I am.......
Is there any way that I can watch this without paying to download Quicktime? I don't currently have it installed.
I'm itching to watch these clips!

The Rat

Edit:
I figured out how to do it for free.

Thank you so much Jordon Krug for sharing this. I wonder whether similar footage will be on FAFDM and GBU?
What a fabulous insight into the filming. I never thought we'd see anything like this.
I like the alternative music, particularly the main title theme with more vocal harmonies.
Fascinating stuff

Try KM Player. IMO, it is far superior than Windows Media Player and it also plays Quicktime files. You can also play videos with more than one audio stream.

The funny thing is, when you look at some of the slates, can you imagine loving a film called "Ray the Magnificent"? (or "The Magnificent Ray") :) Even they must have thought that was cheesy cause they changed it DURING production to "the Magnificent Stranger" (hand written on some of the slates)

Title: Re: Watch the Fistful Italian trailer and Italian dvd outtakes reel!
Post by: Le Bon on March 06, 2009, 03:54:50 PM
I was going to mention about the slate with RAY THE MAGNIFICENT on it...you beat me to it  O0 I heard that the working title was THE MAGNIFICENT STRANGER but RAY  ??? If it was called RAY first and then changed to MAGNIFICENT STRANGER you can work out which scenes were filmed first from the trailer.

Yes, that version of the title music is on the extended or bootleg CD, I have a copy of that.  It's somewhat "partway" between the music from Pastures of Plenty (sung by Peter Tevis) and the final soundtrack cut.  When I first heard both those on the CD I found them very interesting, as I was trying to figure how Morricone got from one to the other.  Apparently Leone liked the music from Pastures of Plenty (which did not have the whistling), told Morricone he liked the music.

Check out Benito Steffanelli in the trailer at 1:06. He looks pissed that Ramon is smooching with Marisol.
Wonder if that was meant to play into the movie at one point or another.

That's funny, I didn't notice that - he actually rolls his eyes, like "here we go again"

Should that trailer not have had SPOILER ALERT written all over it....talk about giving the story and crucial parts away...especially the shooting of the Baxters....

I remember watching another trailer for that movie, the one on the R1 DVD (probably the american trailer). Every single guy being shot was in it.

Thanks so much for posting the outtakes segment, it convinced me to go and import the set from dvdland.it. I'm happy to be corrected, but this looks like a whole new restoration of the movie, different to the MGM and German Paramounts from a few years back - I've only watched bits of it, and it looks superb. The restoration segment on the DVD unfortunately is only in Italian - pretty much everything else has English subtitles, but not that bit.

Also, one crucial thing, in the segment where Clint shoots the 4 Baxters who scared his mule, I'm convinced there is a bit more information on the sides of the picture. The guy who is shot on the right-hand side of the screen, in the MGM version you don't really see much of him as he falls (slightly off screen) - in this version, you can see a lot more of him, he's basically completely on screen.

I'm going to try and get some screen caps done, for comparison, but am interested in other peoples take on this if they have the new set.    :)

You're absolutely right, this is a completely new restoration from the original negative, I believe the mgm restoration was from an interpositive element (nobody wanted to ship the negative overseas).  I think this accounts for the slight cropping on the MGM and german versions. Mgm didn't do any digital restoration on the film (John Kirk doesn't believe in it), but the germans took the MGM HD master and digitally restored it (removing flicker, dirt etc) a couple of years ago. Up until this new version, that was the best quality version.. Even thought the restoration segment is in italian, you can see pretty clearly that they went all the way back to the original negative, re-color timed it (especially the day-for night scenes) and digitally removed original camera negative scratches etc. There's not a spec of dirt anywhere! It looks stunning on the blu-ray, as good as any modern feature in terms of sharpness, color accuracy etc. If FAFDM gets the same treatment by the same company we're in for a treat. (there is a FAFDM BLU ray which I have, it looks very good as well, but is only in Italian and has no extras) I think it's produced by a different company.

I would love to see screen comparisons if you want to take the time to do them :)  Thanks for your comments on the cropping, I hadn't noticed that originally, now that you point it out it makes me even happier to own the new version.

Here's the first one, I'll get some more up in a day or so. From the top down, in this order:
1) Original UK Region 2 DVD (backup copy)
2) MGM UK Region 2 SE
3) Paramount German SE (TLE Films restoration)
4) Ripleys Home Video Italian DVD (new Italian restoration)

Look to the center-right on the bottom image, you'll see more of the building on the right. Also, top-right has a bit more mountain, and (possibly) a fraction more information along the bottom of the screen.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this - it's clear that the new image is sharper, less contrasty and has more info - all of which are hard to judge without direct comparisons - thanks for your effort!

Yes :) But anyway, if you don't watch movies on a computer, your own tv screen probably crops even more than any of these releases...

Actually, it was when I was doing a quick comparison on my TV that I noticed the extra information (when Clint shoots the 4 Baxters)  ;D It was purely by accident though, I wasn't looking for it.

Also, the MGM SE has a lot of flickering on it, particularly during the "My mule don't like people laughing..." segment. The German Paramount is better in that regard, but this new restoration seems to be in a different league altogether.  When the 4 Baxters are shown in close-up before Clint shoots them, you can actually see clouds in the background in this new version.

Finally, in one of the extras, you get Allessandro Allessandroni sitting down playing a Spanish guitar and whistling the theme tune - its a great moment, almost worth the price of admission on its own.

Now, I wonder what these guys (the restoration people) could do with FAFDM and the others? O0

I bought the Box (Euro 19,00 Ebay Italia) and just watched it.
AND IT'S GREAT.

Not much need to discuss the stuff here - any serious Leone fan must have it in his collection.
The film is in English anyway, the rest is subtitled.

Great stuff.

I really appreciate what you have done JK, they were great to watch.
Anyone else notice the previously unheard bit of music from the trailer. It was a bit of guitar that fitted in at the end of the main theme. The version that we know normally fades out on the soundtrack before the guitar is heard. It's always really exciting hearing a bit of previously unheard music for the rat 8)
