Title: What happened to Sancho Perez?
Post by: Rudra on March 13, 2009, 11:29:32 PM
After he is rescued and brought to Indio's hideout, where does he disappear? Any idea?

Is that the dude that Clint rescues?
He remembered that he'd left his beetle mate behind at the prison so he went back to get him but when he weighed the situation up he decided to hell with Indio and his gang and the two ran off into the sunset together....

Yeah, he is the same dude that Clint rescues from Almogourdo Jail, in order to gain entry into Indio's gang. The last time we see him, is when he meets Indio at his hideout (with Clint) and after that he just vanishes into thin air.

Not true. A quick check of the SL Encyclopedia puts the matter straight:

Quote
The gang immediately after the breakout consists of Slim, Paco, Cucillo, Yuri/Huey (Benito Steffaneli) Wild, the hunchback (Klaus Kinski), and several unnamed characters. They are then joined by Groggy (Luigi Pistili) and another man, bringing the number of members to thirteen. It is this group of unholy disciples that Indio addresses from the pulpit of the ruined church when explaining his plan. In a bid to infiltrate the band, Monco breaks Sancho Perez out of jail and delivers him to Indio. Both men are accepted into the gang. Eventually, at Agua Caliente, even Col. Mortimer briefly joins the group. Indio’s gang members have an exceedingly high mortality rate. The first three to go are Blackie, Chico and Paco killed by Monco en route to Santa Cruz for the decoy bank job. Next is Wild, gunned down by Mortimer in Agua Caliente over an insult. After Monco and Mortimer are exposed  as bounty hunters, Nino kills Slim, under orders from Indio, and Indio himself kills Cucillo. These two deaths are blamed on Monco and Mortimer, who have been allowed by Indio to escape. Indio sends the remaining gang members after them, hoping his men will be killed (he intends to share the bank loot only with Nino). Groggy, suspicious, kills Nino and confronts Indio. Mortimer and Monco kills everyone else. Two, including Sancho, are shot jointly by Mortimer and Monco in the street.

I have highlighted the final comment regarding Sancho for the purposes of this discussion. Obviously, Rudra, you have seriously misrepresented the great Sergio's attention to detail. Some self-criticism is no doubt in order, as well as an apology to all members of this board. I leave it to you to decide whatever additional penance you should make to the memory of the great one himself.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the answer. I guess, I will have to watch the last 20 minutes again, to spot Sancho Perez getting a bullet from Mortimer-Monco team. Anyway, thanks for the answer.

I think you'll find that the entire gang is disposed of. No one's coming back for the sequel.

Maybe he was just having a little trouble with his adding?

But it's all right, now.

That's about what I figured Dave, but one would have thought Sancho would have gotten a more prominent death scene after all the character build-up.

True. In fact, I must admit that I myself am a little disappointed that Indio himself didn't take a more personal role in his disposal. For old time's sake. >:D

Given that Groggy affected to despise anyone who gets caught, surely he should have disposed of Sancho when he killed Nino?

As Tonto or Tarzan would say: "him dead".

Sancho was one of two men killed in the street by Mortimer and Monco. They had their backs to the camera. The numbers add up and you can do a countdown from Mortimer's estimate in the hotel room. So, unless Sancho quit and another man joined, he must logically have been one of the two in the street. I, of course, put up a valiant fight until that wagon burst into my hideout.  >:(

There is one gang member who has never been identified either by name of character or actor. He was in the chapel scene and he makes up the numbers. That's all I can say.

This question has been asked many times.  After breaking Sancho out of prison, he is only seen briefly in two non-speaking moments as far as I can recall.  1.  When robbing the El Paso bank, I think Sancho is the one in the wagon wearing a hood.  2.  After Indio kills Cuchilio and puts on an act, there is a shot of Sancho with a puzzled expression.

Maybe Sancho was indeed killed as described earlier.  But none of the guys killed in that scene look like Sancho to me.  In my imagination, Sancho knew he would not beat Manco or Mortimer in a shootout nor would he get any money.  So he fled the scene.  Maybe Manco's problem with adding was a reference to both Sancho and Groggy.  Manco either understood this or saw Sancho sneak off, so he factored that into his "adding".

If this theory is flawed, I welcome any counter-points.

Must admit after seeing the two killed in the street, i cant figure out if it is Sancho. They are both wearing sombreros and when Indio tells his gang to search for Manco and the colonel none have sombreros on.

One small point always makes me chuckle is when Indio shoots Cuchillo and he rolls down the slope and at the last second just manages to stop himself from falling over the side. Its only a foot or so but he must have thought he was further up the slope than he actually was and it was gonna hurt if he fell off........

Sancho was played by the Greek actor Panos Papadopoulos who died in Munich on 18 February 2001. Someone above mentioned that Sancho had a big character build-up after his release from jail but he then became part of the scenery with only a couple of possible sightings like the one in the wagon. I wonder if the actor left the production and so we only saw glimpses of a substitute. Assuming he was one of the two killed in the street, we didn't see his face. My bet is that the actor moved on.

I wouldn't say Sancho got a big character build-up; he merely got sprung from prison. We maybe Sancho was only important as an excuse for Manco to join the gang, but he's not any more important a gang member than anyone else; so, once he's sprung, he doesn't rate any more screen time than anyone else.
