lyrics are "Sean, Sean, Sean"

Coburn's caharcter's real name is Sean.

When Juan (the Rod Steiger character) asks Sean his name and he says "Sean," Juan looks confused since it is an Irish name which he never heard of before, and says "huh?". Therefore Sean replies "John," which is a name that Juan would be familiar with. So throughout the film, Juan refers to the Coburn character as "John," though his real name is Sean.

Sean's friend in the flashbacks, who is also with the same girl as Sean, is never referred to by name in the film. But some people on these boards have said that in the shooting script his name is "Nolan."

Interestingly, the Victor McLaglen character in "The Informer" is named Gypo Nolan. I am sure this was no coincidence  ;)

Coburn plays John H. Mallory, as seen  in the clipping from   The Independent Irishman.

His slip of "Sean"   could be interpreted as "John"; the accent could cover it.

Sean Nolan is his friend in the car, at the tree,  and  in the bar.

Frayling has said (I believe in the film commentary) that "Sean" is an Irish form of "John"

In all the books Coburn is named Sean Mallory and Warbeck only as Sean's friend

Yes, we all know that. . I know a Sean Scheinmann, it's a Celtic/Gaelic form of "John".   It's possible he "slipped out" "Sean" as cover..or..his accent.
 My closed caption says: "John".

The Irish call it "Irish", but the Scots/Welsh call it "Gaelic". It's the same language. Sean Connery is Scottish, his name is a  Gaelic version of John...

In the James Lewis Book, "john Mallory" is his  name. "Sean Nolan" is his friend.  Coburn is not named.

I'm unaware of any other books--do you have authors? :)

Juan looks confused since it is an Irish name which he never heard of before, and says "huh?".

Juan says:  "What's  your name?", then; "What did you say your name was?".   He is astonished, as his name is Juan--like the destiny, as he later says.

Oh, well. It's just a movie. ;)  Dinnae  mean to argue on St. Paddy's day. . Just pointing out the one book.

I think it's cuz Juan never heard the name "Sean" before; when Sean realized that, he decided to make it easier by just saying his name is "John"

Yeah, possibly.  Who's to know for sure? What was Leone thinking? O0

I still believe he is blown away by the "destiny". Oh, Well, It's just a movie. ;)

I'm not here to argue like the idiots on BombShock or Shadow R/X.  Those guys try to argue FACTS.  So stupid... ::)

Ok, some books (like De Fornari) have the name of Coburn as Sean/John Mallory.

But I didn't found a name for his friend. In de Fornari's long synopsis he also only called "his friend" or "Sean's friend"

What was the idea btw that Coburn is only John and only his friend is Sean, Sean, Sean?

I don't fully understand this either. Perhaps John's friend is Nolan in the script, and I can accept that. But what's in the actual film to indicate that Nolan is Sean? Why would Mallory be named John and not Sean?

Is this a good time to trot out the "My Three Seans" theory?

doesn't the newspaper that offers the bounty say "Sean Mallory"? His name is Sean; he said "John" to Juan cuz he realized Juan never heard of tha name Sean before. I always viewed this as pretty straightforward, and I don't think this has anything whatsoever to do with Sean's friend in the flashbacks

I'm pretty sure the United Irishman calls him John. But I assume that's a British-run paper and they might not wish to honor an IRA man with a Gaelic name.

Mmmmm---maybe. But I'm sure since they put a bounty on his head, they'd do their jolly well best to get his name right. ???

I'm just so glad we cleared up the identity of John's Moto-Seeckle. :)
