Title: Silver Lode (1954)
Post by: cigar joe on November 01, 2009, 08:58:30 PM
A basically town bound McCarty/Red Scare themed Western that is nevertheless entertaining enough to keep you guessing what is going to happen next, its not great, but its not terrible either and it gets at times a bit cheesy near the end. It stars John Payne who I don't really recall seeing in a Western before as Dan Ballard an ex gunfighter who is tracked down by marshal Ned McCarty (Dan Duryea) who quite good in this as opposed to his usual over acting performances. Accompanying Duryea are Harry Carey Jr. and Alan Hale Jr. and Stuart Whitman, Payne has two female interests Lizabeth Scott as Rose Evans who he is about to marry and Dolores Moran who plays Dolly the town tramp. Allan Dwan directed.

Yeah, it's entertaining until the barn shooting. Then it falls desperately into the ridiculous.  This Dolores Moran is hot, though not a beauty. While Lizabeth Scott tries to play being still a girlie long after her heyday. But it is Duryea who, not surprisingly. keeps the show going (his voice is similar to Brando's, am I mistaken?). 4\10
