I saw this movie many years ago, and thanks to a friend who lent me a copy I watched it again today. The movie is about a Mexican named Joaquin Murrieta, who immigrates to California during the gold rush and tries his luck searching for gold. Once he finds it, he is beaten by three men and his wife is raped and murdered. He swears revenge and eventually he finds the perpetrators and kills them. Later, he leads a large group of bandits and terrorizes California.

I am surprised at the low score at IMDB, as I think the movie is a quite well made American western style. George Sherman's direction is pretty good, and I like the role of Jeffrey Hunter as Joaquin, although I don't find him a very believable Mexican. Roberto Camardiel (actor in many SWs) also plays a good role as three-finger Garcia, and Arthur Kennedy's role as Capt. Love is also quite decent. Diana Loris (Kate) and Sara Lezana (Rosita Murieta) also did play excellent roles. The cinematography is pretty good with several good action scenes. The musical score, while not remarkable, is also pretty decent.

I would give this movie a 7/10
