Title: The Scarlet Worm (2010)
Post by: Col. Mortimer on May 26, 2010, 09:19:05 PM
A new film in the Spaghetti Western vein is soon to be in production. It stars Spaghetti Western veterans Dan van Husen and Brett Halsey. The film is allowing anyone to become a part of it. You can support the film by simply making a donation on it's Kickstarter page. Great prizes are being offered for contributing. If you always wanted a film credit, now is your chance.

I don't understand what will happen if the amount of money needed for this isn't raised in given time?

It's all or nothing. If the amount of money needed isn't raised in the given amount of time, the project won't be funded. If you donate, you will only be charged if funding is successful.

The title sounds like one Howard could have used for a Conan adventure.

I wish you guys luck, needless to say. My opinion is that you should have done more promotion before starting this in all-or-nothing mode. If 2.500 bucks is all you need, for example starting at a place like Facebook would have given you the much needed tail wind. (No, in case you were wondering, I'm not in any way associated with them. ;))

A 2.500 bucks SW is the best they could come up with in order to canalize their views on the issue?

The film is not anti-abortion propaganda. You haven't even read the script.

I don't have the script to send you (contrary to what you may think, I'm not the director or even the writer), but check this out:

It all got deleted on Imdb, lol, the jist of it was, (a poster named Paycal posted) that an aging gunfighter trains a young disciple to kill a meek brothel owner who performs abortions on his women. It sounds like a moronic juxtaposition of anti abortion propaganda and ridiculous storyline to me,  why would you need a trained gunfighter to kill a "meek" brothel owner.

In reality, from the histories of brothels that I read the children born of prostitutes basically were reared to become prostitutes, so the guy would be aborting his future stock in trade, in fact the age of consent in New York State up until 1896 was 10.

Bahhhh!

I don't recall all the deleted comments, so I can't re-post them. However, the screenwriter himself has said to me that the film is not anti-abortion at all (it just happens to be about one isolated incident involving abortions). He said he is not interested in "message films". Another person who has read the script also commented on how he never would have expected people to infer such a message (based on the script, not the Kickstarter summary of course).

I have a part in this.
I also did some stunts and second unit directing.
There's a producer credit in there as well...

Here's the trailer after a short article.

(catch me in the trailer. I pop up quite a bit).

Well, I have been missing for the better part of a year if that is any indication.
And this doesn't take too much of my time away, at least I won't let it from now on.

I watched the trailer and thought that what these movies are lacking is outrageousness: characters, scenes, dialogues. That's what Tarantino caught from spaghetti movies, though he wasn't always consequent. That's even what some american horror movies practioners do. I think it is better trying something new and fail than chewing the same ol' cud.
Sure, more easily said than done, but I can't see the effort, though, granted, we're talking about a trailer.

There's enough new material in there to warrant what you want.
None of it is evident in the trailer with the exception of the abortion stuff which is only mentioned in the preview.

It'll be hitting the straight to video market (which is where most Westerns crop up nowadays) which is inundated with pure uninteresting trash The Man Who Came Back, Six Guns,Aces And Eights,Ghost Town the list goes on) that don't try to bring nothing new to the table.
Our film has some authentic dialogue from the period as well as incidents ripped straight out of obscure history such as thugs being stuffed into cows to send messages to the criminal underworld.
The script was written by historian David Lambert.

I don't think he was being a grouch. He just has reservations and was expressing them.
I just don't care for people automatically bringing it down because it looks cheap or whatever weird prejudices they may have if it doesn't fit their standard viewing experience of 100+ million dollar movies. Fact is it was made with $7,000 (we won't and can't mention that when selling it) and it will go alongside $40,000+ Westerns in the video market. It already looks as good if not better than those bigger budgeted pictures.

The Western board at IMDB is full of chaps that have little imagination who have ridiculous "rules" of what makes a "good Western".

"If there are no Indians it can't be good"

"Any Western set in America but not made by Americans must be trash"

I've since given up talking to these stubborn oxes and left them to their own devices.

Thanks for the congrats.

Who needs an historian? SW weren't written by historians. Sure, verisimilitude is required, but you must let unbridled fantasy take the upper hand. Well, I shouldn't speak before watching the final product. The same goes for True Grit, I guess. So I'll be sitting here and wait...

of special note...

Brett Halsey is wearing the same hat he wore in Bava's Roy Colt and Winchester Jack.
Try as I might I can never sit through that one.
Despite the inventive camera angles and decent score it's a real stinker.

No idea at the moment.
The final cut should be done just before the year is over.
After that we start looking for buyers.

If we make a deal with Netflix (or the distributor makes a deal with them once they've bought it) it'll probably be streamed around the world. Is netflix limited to the U.S.?
I doubt it.

A distributor finally is making a deal for COMIN' AT YA! if you're still interested in that.
The company wants to debut it at the Berlin film festival.
My guess is it'll do the rounds in Europe before coming here.
