Title: Favourite line
Post by: Half Soldier on April 18, 2004, 11:17:31 AM
I'm new to this excellent site but one of the fun things i've done is trawl through the different subjects and looked at members signatures.  It makes you realise how many classic lines there are in so few films of Sergio Leone.  My signature (good friend by my side) is from (I think) one of the all time classic scenes in cinema history at the mission in GBU.  But favourite line?  I like the bit in OUTITW where Frank spits and says 'Now that you called me by name'.  Spine tingling stuff.  I'll probably change my mind next week though. :-\

The Leone spaghettis are filled with a ton of memorable lines.  And memorable scenes: maybe my favorite is Tuco caressing the gold coins in his hands, then standing up showing his head framed in Blondie's noose.

yes ! yes ! yes ! cusser. my favorite scene as well. when that rope catches tuco's eye and we hear the familiar aahheeahheeahh, the guitar plays an especially low twangy register.  for some reason when i hear that gutsy guitar line  i think of the dragnet theme. DUM-DA-DUM-DUM ! your like, SO busted tuco.  ;D

These are my personal favorites:

"Keep your loven brother happy."

"How can I trust a man who wares both belt and suspenders? Man can even trust his own pants!"

"They call them millions..."

"When you have to shoot. Shoot, don't talk!"

"He asked you to be there, but there was only me... "

"Well if you miss, you had better miss very well! He who double crosses me and leaves me alive, he understands nothing about Toco, nothing..."

"Lets pretend that Chico here is the safe; which weighs three hundred pounds and cant be opened with dynamite..."

"Duck you Suckers!"

  Harmonica from OUATITW:

"Your friends have a high mortality rate, Frank.  First three . . . then two."  ;)

"You brought two too many."

Classic.

"Inside those three men are three bullets"

One exchange of lines that is hilarious and makes me laugh out loud every time is when Harmonica pretends to turn in Cheyenne at the auction for $5000. You know, when they're walking down the stairs... something like this:

- Judas was content with 4.970 dollars less..
- Only they did'nt have dollars in them days..
- But sons of bitches, yeah!

How beautiful is that? It's almost a Monty Python gag...

"These rebels have no will to fight.
They'll soon be finished.  We get rid of these
bastards and then we begin making money on those
yankees.  They carry gold, not paper dollars - and
they're gonna beat the South.  Look.  See that one with the white beard sitting in the wagon?  General Sibley...he looks dead.  He's finally getting out of our hair.  Hooray for Dixie! Hooray!  Hooray for Dixie!"
-----------------------------------------------
That whole monologue perfectly captured the greed, cynicism and absurdity of GBU.  I roll on the floor laughing whenever that greasy hotelkeeper says his lines.  And then the reply to his old wife or mother or whoever it is, "Shut up old hen!"

'See you soon, idi-, idi-'

'Idiots. It's for you.'

This goes nicely with 'You? - you can't even read' earlier.

where there's revolution there's confusion
and where there's confusion a man who knows
what he wants stands a good chance of getting it.

has to be

'When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk!'

This is one of my favourite film lines full stop, and i wish more characters in other films would take note!

When a man with a 45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with a pistol will be a dead man.

I generally smoke just after I eat. Come back in about ten minutes.

See you soon idi..idi
Idiots. It's for you.

Who the hell is that? One bastard walks in another comes out.

When you have to shoot, shoot don't talk.

Looks like were shy of one horse.

And a whole lot more but I'm not gonna list them cos I'll be here all day.

I have many, but I've remembered this one:

Stupid, useless bridge. Flyspeck on headquarters' maps.

(It's connected to something else for me, one book, where an island on map is called "flyspeck" by one character, and when the heroes decide to go there, that character says "It would be funny if we came there and saw it was really only flyspeck.")

As if I could choose one. Here are a FEW of my favorites, divided by film.

Fistful of Dollars:

"My mistake . . . four coffins."
"When a man with a .45 meets a man with a rifle, the man with a pistol will be a dead man."
"Sometimes a man's life in these parts depends on a mere scrap of information."

For a Few Dollars More:

"This train'll stop at Tucumcari."
"When the chimes end . . . pick up your gun."
"I usually don't smoke until after I eat, why dontcha come back in about ten minutes."
"Ten minutes and you'll be smokin' in hell!"
"Because of the trains . . . 'cause of the DAMN TRAINS, DAMN 'EM!"

Good, Bad, and Ugly:

"Two kinds of people in this world, my friend . . ."
"Take a slug of this captain, and keep your ears open."
"A golden haired angel watches over him."
"I'll sleep better . . . knowing my good friend is by my side."
"200,000 dollars is a lot of money, we're gonna have to earn it."
"Hey, Blondie! you know what you are! . . . .Just a dirty son-of-a-bitch!"
"But the pity is . . . when I'm paid . . . . I always see the job through."
Any of the insults spewed by Tuco.

OUATITW:

Every single line in the film,

Fistful of Dynamite:

The whole speech Juan gives about "The revolutions."
"You make the holes with the holy water, and I get inside!"
"That is incredible! That is fantastic! My name is Juan and yours is John!"

OUATIA:

"Noodles . . . I slipped."
"I like the stink of the streets! It cleans my lungs . . . . . and it gives me a hard-on."
