hello.
the best i've heard, is by David Bakker.
recorded in an amphitheater in Athens.
prolly 10years ago. (VHS)
the soprano was excellent, but this was Jill's America, not E of G.
some info on E of G:
a large orchestra seems to weight it down too much.
the EM original had a smaller ensemble. the tempo and rhythm spot on (orchestras can be sloppy)
most would have been session players. different attitude.
it shows on all the dollars music.
a recording sound stage - different to a concert hall. drier, cleaner sound.
a few takes would have been done, and the best bits edited together in post. (most orch records are done this way.)
Edda? at the time of recording was the best for this job, pitch and timing - almost perfect.
most of the other don't get the quick bits right at all, but it is a hard thing to sing.

long time no post.
had a listen.
that band - Atlantics - had a few big hit in australia in the 60's.
i was a big fan.
this version is ok. just.
i think, quite recent as they got back together a few yrs back.
anyway, listen to some of other.
mediocre.
just because a melody is simple like these does not mean it will adapt to any style.

however, it IS arranged in the EM dollars style.

bear in mind that the dollar movies were done on a very strict budget.
i wonder what Morricone got for Fistfull.
prolly a case of wine. lol.
he would have made lotz up from "found sounds"
eg = the whistler lead the choir as well.
i just think it all - the style - stuck when the movie became a huge success, so he carried on to the next ones.
i'd do the same, even now, titoli.
Morricone music always sounds better to me with the muso he gets to do the soundtrack, not the orchestras he uses on tours.

hey joe,
cool observations.
remember that when these were made, nobody had any idea the things like DVDs and home theaters would happen, and that these movies would become iconic.
so, when these where shown at a cinema - and i saw them plenty times in differing movie houses through-out Australia - the bogus dubbing didn't matter.
it was ALL out of sync, because the speakers were either on stage or/and behind the screen!!!!!!
certainly NOT surround sound. lol.
light travels many, many times faster than sound.
the images would hit your eyes instantaneously but the soundtrack was/is delayed.
if you are sitting ~ 30feet back in the cinema, the sound arrives 30milleseconds late.
believe me, 1/30th of a second is a looooong time with audio.
in other words, the editor would have know this, and wouldn't have bother syncing as tight as they do today.
BUT on DVD or TV, yes it's very obvious, now. (didn't bother me at all then.)

tone color, titoli, tone color.
certain instruments have more distinctive personalities than others.
these are used, generally, as spice.
not the main meal.
these elements were the strength of the dollar soundtracks.

here's another thought..........
maybe, if he had lived, Eric Fleming would have been even bigger than Clint Eastwood.
i like Clint - who doesn't?
BUT.
Fleming is certainly a better actor, based on Rawhide, thanks to Carrie.
he engenders a certain trust and gravitas that Clint just doesn't.
also Steve McQueen in Bullitt is really an early Dirty Harry.
again, more trust and gravitas, than Clint.

yup, they are the ones in HN.
was watching the latest Lawman upload tonight and i counted two in the final showdown.
James Drury guest stars as Dan Troops brother in this one and dispatches the main baddy with 2 shotgun blasts before being shot about 3 x himself.
and it's all in the same frame.
High Chaparral: the Doc Holliday episode. Doc, played by Jack Kelly, shoot a Mexican in the head a very close range. Bullet hole in head included.

hi guys,
just a small update.
been watching lotz of old TV westerns on YouTube.
mainly on CarrieOK4059, i think that's the right name..........
anyway, episodes of Lawman and Tombstone Territory feature shooter-shootee situations a few times.
maybe, because of budget and a "disposable" medium mindset lead to this happening.
oh, and, i think i was it in the High Chaparral a coupla times as well.

interesting.
one of my jobs has been recording voices.
i am very familiar with these movies.
although Frayling has stated that GMV did the vox in FAFDM, i don't think so.
too similar to FOD and the captain in GBU.
would have to suggest they are the same person.
