Off-Topic Discussion / Re: STOP MAKING SENSE - IMAX (1984/2023)

Saw this on IMAX on Monday with the (horribly awkward) live stream Q&A to follow. I've seen this movie over 10 times and I'm only somewhat of a Talking Heads fan. I just think it's a complete masterpiece and one of the best films ever made. The restoration is gorgeous and the sound design is out of this world... especially in IMAX. I've seen the movie a LOT and I immediately noticed how significant the restoration is.

Unfortunately, technical difficulties at our IMAX chopped off the first 15-20 minutes so we missed the whole building-of-the-set sequence.

But still - 10/10!

JC is one of my favs. Starman, They Live, and Christine are my A++++ ones.

In the Mouth of Madness
Prince of Darkness
Assault on Precinct 13
Escape from New York
The Thing
Big Trouble in Little China

are basically in a big 4th place tie.

Hahah. I remember being so BAFFLED that you gave Elvis a 10 (a movie I can barely sit through 5 minutes of, though somehow finished) that I got confused by its ranking on your list and had to check what you gave Banshees.

But wait, didn't you 10 TG:M and Elvis and only 8 Banshees? Is Banshees now a 10 or did those two get lower?

My 2 favorites of the year are pretty vanilla: The Fabelmans and Banshees. Really really liked both. Linklater's Apollo 10 1/2 is also one of my favorites and I thought Del Toro's Pinocchio was great.

PowerRR's Rankings:

1. La La Land
2. Whiplash
3. First Man
4. Guy and Madeleine on a Park Bench
5. Those 2 episodes from that one Netflix show
6. That iPhone commercial

1 through 3 are 8ish. 4 is a nice starter movie 6/10. His Netflix episodes are decent but the whole miniseries sucked. iPhone commercial is lame.

I want to see Chazelle make a great movie of his own. He is king derivative (a VERY good copy-cat though) but I'm still holding out hope that he'll make his first real movie soon. Unfortunately, with Babylon it looks like he's taking his PTA form again.

TH's Rankings:

worst "director" ever

1. Those 2 episodes from that one netflix show - best cinema in years
2. Guy and Madeleine - cassavettes ripoff!
3. First Man - more expensive, bullshit hollywood cassavettes ripoff!
4. La La Land - PTA ripoff, but at least a ripoff from before PTA fucking sucked!
5. That iPhone commercial - better than Whiplash
6. Whiplash - SUCKS. DUMB.

DJ's rankings:

1. La La Land - movie is a 0 but blu transfer is 100000
2. Whiplash - movie is negative 15 but blu transfer is 1535
3. guy and madeline - only on dvd, waiting for blu transfer
4. First Man - I own the 4K UHD blu but don't have a player
5. Those 2 episodes from that one Netflix show - I don't stream! waiting for critierion blu!
6. That iPhone commercial - what's an iphone?

What about the soundtrack?  Nobody ever says anything about BB/BCS soundtracks and they are amazing.

It?s a 9 because not everything is as good as the last season (which is a 11/10). Too much skylaaaaar and Mary scenes. Not a lot, but too much. By the way, the writers knew that because they regularly abandon full subplots like the whole kleptomania thing without notice. Good thing but, like Jacques Pr?vert told Georges Brassens when the singer refused the Legion d?Honneur: ? It?s a good thing to have refused it; it would have been better not to deserve it. ?
As you know for me, big imperfections don't mean "not a 10". In that case, BCS is endlessly more imperfect than BB. There's endless more pointlessness and meandering. Still are both two of the greatest works ever and easy 10s.

But this is an Altman guy talking to a Fincher guy. A meanderer vs. a perfection-lover.

My predictions:
noodles_leone is gonna love it.

JenkinsRR, on the other hand, is going to hate it twice.
I'm actually starting to think I won't like it. I'll be there day 1 of course, because I love seeing massive movies like this in theater and I've loved Chazelle's work so far.

But it looks so manufactured and way too silly. Almost like a Target-commercial version of The Wolf of Wall Street meets Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Though I think the mixed reviews are exciting me more than 10/10s across the board.

Breaking Bad, seasons 1 to 5 - 9/10
A 9? A 9????!!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I hope only because BCS is a 10. But shouldn't BCS be a 15/10 and BB a 10/10? And no comment on the Blu transfer?

We are done. I am JenkinsRR now.

I'm taking this answer as a resounding YES, but:

YOU, not me, are actually PoweRR.

If IMDb says 2021, it's 2021. If it says 2022, it's 2022.

No 2022 list is allowed to have a 2021.

If you can't see 2021 til 2022, then revise last year's list, dammit!

The Fabelmans (2022) - 8/10
Can't wait to see this as the best movie of 2023 on French fuck movie blogs.

The worst! A real shame to meet in real life. Pretentious and cliche! Wouldn't recomment the film, but the Blu transfer is 11/10.
