Once Upon A Time In America / Re:foreshadowing - the phony death of Max
« on: January 31, 2004, 02:29:28 AM »
Very good point 4 stars !
When Max had to imagine and proposed a plot to his new Mafioso bosses, he certainly remembered the salt scene.
"I shall pretend I'm dying. "

( BTW it's a classical infantile attitude. Everybody ,at least once , dremt to die and so punish his parents. )

Duck, You Sucker / Re:Thoughts on this film

because
"in Revolution, there is confusion".

As Noodles said  to young  Jimmy Conway after the oil bath:  you (the workers) shall be always fucked .(french subtitle)

Leone fascist ? Surely not.   But a little bit conservative ?

DYS is a perfect example of a transition film.Often transition opus are weak because they try to mix opposites.

1° First theWestern quadrilogy manner:big effect , large plans, strong music, cynic attitude, magic gun shots

2° At last OUATIA manner: more subtile music, more psychology, no big plan , more dialogs  , more realistic .VERY different.

For DYS, between 19th century films (Westerns) and 20th century one (OUATIA) Leone chooses a transition period (beginning of the 20th) , a transition style (motorcycle and horses, guns and machine-guns), transition country (if Europe and USA are in the 20th, Mexico seems still in the 19th) ,.

May be why many friends dont like  DYS. Too half/half,  not enough "Dollars" for some people , too "Dollars" for the others .

Not enough revolutionary for some people, too politic for the others.

Not enough magic ...too fairy tale for the others

And so on.

By the way, IMO Rod Steiger is a pure miscasting, Juan role was for Eli !

I he says it's out of place because Frank and Jill are inside McBain ranch, while Harmonica and Cheyenne's men are standing just outside.

Great ! Obviously it's impossible.
I can't imagine Harmonica and Cheyenne gang " tenir la chandelle".
Thanks Cusser

A Fistful of Dollars / SPANISH ACTRESS
« on: January 27, 2004, 01:26:26 AM »
Saw "VIRIDIANA", a BUNUEL Film.
The maid is played by Margarita LOZANO , the same actress who plays Mrs BAXTER .
Interesting woman, wild and sexy but not kind at all. Black eyes, angry look and deep sensuality.

(By the way interesting film, very "Bunuelian") :)

Marx: The emancipation of the workers will be made by the workers themselves

Wolinski ( a french comic designer): revolution will be made not by people who desire it but by people who need it

Mao: revolution is not  a  smart dinner.. it is a violent act by what one class overthrows an other one

Juan opinion is classicaly conservative: Don't move ,tomorrow will be worse !

But Juan is not a worker, he is not a peon but a thief. For a fistful of Dollars he could be a  killer for Mexican  landlords or US Investors. For a few Dollars more he could be a Counter-Revolution  Leader.

Juan is far from Zapata, Pancho Villa and Adelita.

Sean is  far from John Reed .

Both have a long way to dialectic and class struggle.

Delivrance is a great film, I agree.

But I 'm wondering about the mean of the word "nature"
I remember that Dustin 's woman was sodomized in Straw Dogs and the poor fat guy also in Delivrance ,screaming like a pig.

is it so "Nature" ? May be I prefer Culture in this case. :-\

Lawrance's Seven Pillars Of Wisdom is at times frightingly close to that film. Maybe less on sadomachism and the British/French betrayal.

(Thanks Smoker,)

Do you think so ? I like very much the book: very dry like a desert sand, not so easy to read ... in comparision the film is a sugared pleasure , a perfect entertainment Hollywood product with a well-shaved Lawrence and some white actors playing Arabians and Turkishs.

By the way  ,is Georges W. the new Lawrence ? Shall he learn to drive a camel ?  After Bagdad he currently dreams about Damas :D

Once Upon A Time In America / PIERROT LE FOU
« on: January 20, 2004, 03:04:49 AM »
I saw this film last night for the first time ( nobody's perfect).

Great !

I appreciate the scene where Belmondo driving his car launched it directly in the sea with his passenger.

Was Noodles a fan of jean-luc Godard ? ;)

Never really been a fan of The Wild Bunch, found Straw Dogs to be much more meaningful.

Jayson, you speak about a film with Dustin Hofmann versus Irish machos ?
I never liked it, it seems to me an easy apology of self defence: " please rape my wife,so I could KILL EVERYBODY ."

IMO , " The Getaway" is a great film from a great novel.  ::)

I think that the best movie I've ever seen about Cuban "Revolution" is Bananas by Woody Allen!!!!

I fully agree and Woody was a great guerillero!
I don't know if panties are still weared OVER the trousers in La Havana ;D
