I'm looking forward to hearing from any forum members who buy the blu ray. I'm all the way down in Australia so it'll take a long time for it to hit our shores. I might have to order it from Amazon...

DVD Savant (at dvdtalk.com) mentioned that Paramount will release a blu ray of Once Upon a Time in the West on May 31st.

I'll probably get it too, but the less-than-ideal picture quality is a bit of a disappointment. It'd be good to have the whole film on one disk, but I'd been hoping for a new transfer for this whereas it seems like they have just up-rezzed an older HD master, probably made when they did the telecine for the dvd release. I'm not holding my breath for a newly remastered special edition, so this may well end up being the definitive version.

Sergio Leone News / Leone retrospective in Australia

If there are any other Australian Leone fans on the board...

The Kino cinema in Melbourne, as part of the Melbourne Italian Festival, are having a Leone season:

Apparently they are screeing off 35mm prints but no one has yet been able to confirm if the newly restored print of OUATITW will be showing.

I actually managed to get a copy of the Stingray edition. A girl I used to work with was half Japanese and her parents live in Tokyo and I got her to ask her mother to order it in, then post it to me in Australia. It was great to see it fully uncut (this was in 2003) but unfortunately the picture quality was only avaerage, nowhere near as good as the UK special edition. It was a two disc set with two slightly different cuts of the film, one of the cuts containing the long flashback. I haven't watched it in a long time, so I'm not sure about any other differences, but I'd advise against getting it as the picture quality is average at best - at least it's the correct aspect ratio, though...

Saw it the other night at a preview and tend to agree with your assessment, Indio. I thought some of the action stuff was pretty good and I really liked the scene where the team breaks into the Vatican city, but to describe it as a cheese fest is dead-on. A shame. I hated the second one but I thought the original was pretty good, mainly because De Palma managed to bring some stylish direction to the piece. And I don't know about anyone else, but I just can't take Tom Cruise seriously anymore. He seems more like a mannequin than a human being.

It's scary - I was talking to a film producer recently, younger guy, trying to get a horror movie made, and his cinematic memory stretches all the way back to Blade, with Wesley Snipes! That's his idea of an older, 'classic' movie, for the love of God!

Off-Topic Discussion / Blue Murder
« on: December 14, 2005, 09:48:03 PM »
I'm from Australia, and one of my all time favorite Aussie films is a 3 part TV mini series made in 1996 called Blue Murder. It's based on real life events in New South Wales, in Sydney, revolving around corrupt cop Roger Rogerson and his best friend, drug dealer and crime lord Neddy Smith. Despite being made for TV, this show is as tough as it gets with some truly brutal, disturbing violence and characters - it's kind of like Goodfellas down under.

Anyway, Blue Murder has only been available on dvd in Australia - but a friend just told me it has been picked up by a US company and is out over there as a 2 disc edition! I had no idea anyone would have even heard of it in the US, but whatever - if you like cop/crime movies, I'd highly recommend taking a look at it if you come across it.

Great that Scott has posted on the board - best of luck for future roles.

BTW, regarding Leone's English - I recently (only briefly, unfortunately) met someone who worked on OUATIA in the early stages before having to leave for another project, and she said Leone spoke English just fine... Didn't get the opportunity to ask much more than that, but may have a future chance to do so and will post if I do...

Well, I checked today and still no solid indication of when Dynamite will be out here, at least not from my local dvd store. Will post as soon as it appears...
