1  Films of Sergio Leone / Other Films / Re: Barquero (1970) on: January 08, 2009, 08:44:01 PM
For those in australia, Barquero played on fox classics on Jan 5. I missed the first 30 mins but enjoyed the rest of the film. Although Forest Tucker had the better lines compared to LVC, i thought it was a good LVC movie, and has been mentioned is more of a spaghetti than an american western (filmed in colorado).

The movie is repeated on Jan 10 and i'll definitely watch the whole movie, now does anyone have a dvd burner, since this is impossible to find on dvd??

An anti-social barge owner becomes the town hero when he rescues its residents from a band of outlaws.

Circuit City had this DVD for $4.99 in its flyer !

I 'thought' i'd seen the double box dvd set in the slimline paper box, but this may have been an overseas set (german) when i bought the 'my name is nobody' 4 disc set.

For any canucks out there, bestbuy has OUATIA for $6.99 in this weeks flyer, well recommended!

well the canadian dollar may be at par with the U.S, but our deals aren't.

As far as i'm aware, the 2003 release was in a double plastic case, while the 2005 reissue is in slimline cardboard, i'm hoping there weren't any 'improvements' done on the movie in these 2 years
7  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In The West / R1 - Any difference between the 2003 and 2005 releases? on: October 22, 2007, 02:22:25 PM
I just picked up the last copy in best buy and it was the 2003 special edition, is there anything different with the slimlime 2005 release (beyond the packaging), does it make a difference which i have?
thanks
8  Films of Sergio Leone / Other Films / Re: Jonathan of the Bears aka Jonathan degli orsi (1993) on: July 15, 2007, 06:27:52 AM
I've only bought the franco cleef version which i really enjoyed, was expecting the worst when i heard it was a italian / russian collaboration. Great story, excellent acting and cinematography. Didn't feel there was gratuitous soppy-ness with the bear, so don't know what was left out in the p&s version. Highly recommended for fans of Keoma.
Incidently, on the Keoma commentary, castellari talks about a 3rd film in the 'trilogy', did this ever get made?
9  Films of Sergio Leone / Other Films / Re: Un genio, due compari, un pollo aka A Genius, Two Partners and a Dupe (1975) on: July 15, 2007, 06:22:09 AM
You guys ARE my SW database.
The great thing about all the reviews that have been posted is that you get a variety of opinions which obviously may not agree. i then take the leap and buy what i can. Given the 2 trinity movies and 'my name is nobody', the expectations for 'genius' were high. After watching the german paramount release, i understand why 'genius' is hardly talked about. The story is confused, the actors wasted - Macgoohan doesn't appear until an hour, Kinski has a 5 minute cameo, and half the movie has b-grade film used which jars, especially given the amazing scenery. BUT the reason for the movies failure for me, has been pointed out in an earlier post, while Damiani did the excellent 'a bullet for the general', he can't do comedy.
While it may get better with repeat viewings, for me it will never happen, AND even trying to compare this to 'nobody'.... sorry banjo, "Nobody' is a classic.
10  Films of Sergio Leone / Other Films / William Berger's best SW's on: July 02, 2007, 12:49:27 PM
I hadn't seen too many movies with william berger, sabata and unrecognizable in Keoma.
I bought face to face and the first sartana movie, where he's very good in both. Any other movies i'm missing with good WB parts.
Face to face 'could' be my favourite SW without an american lead. Milian was relatively understated, great acting by volante and very strong lead by WB.
Sartana wasn't as gadgety / circus-y as i expected it to be an WB was great although a little on the deranged side.

just my little joke  Smiley
In spinal tap, the bass player shows the director the 'film he was in', where he plays a hit man who dies before the opening credits. For any non-north americans, a zamboni is the machine that cleans the ice on hockey arenas. I think this just goes to show the level of detail christopher guest and co go to in their films.

Spinal Tap A to Zed
Roma 79: Film made by director Marco Zamboni in 1976 that featured Derek dressed completely in white, playing a trained assassin who is gunned down by the film’s protagonist before the opening credits. Other Zamboni films include "I Siciliani," "Swarthy Like Me," and "Fusilli For Two." Marty DiBergi filmed scenes in which Derek showed a Beta video of his role in the film on the tour bus, but they were cut from the final version of "This is Spinal Tap." (As DiBergi watches Derek’s performance, David and Nigel pull their bass player aside to tell him that he’s "missing something in terms of thrust" in his "power zone," which prompts the zucchini solution.) See Aluminum Foil.

i'm disappointed that no-one has commented on Roma 79 by enzo zamboni. I've heard its a classic and features a famous rock bass player.....
13  Films of Sergio Leone / Other Films / Re: Il mio nome Nessuno aka My Name Is Nobody (1973) on: June 27, 2007, 06:42:35 PM
the extras are in german (with english subtitles) and the terrence hill segments are in english, so are easily watchable. The nobody doco is 75 mins and i think the genius segment is 30 mins full details on this page  http://www.fistful-of-leone.com/forums/index.php?topic=1810.15
I think the set is defintely value for money. I'd also read about the 3 missing clips (not scenes), but to be honest thay would not have made the film any less bad. The scenery in monumnet valley is excellent, the story, macgoohan is given nothing to do but most of all is the use of b-grade stock which jars compared to the good footage.
As far as leone direction, it says he did the opening scene of genius which i can believe, the bizarre thing with 'nobody' is that it says he did the worst scenes in the movie, hall of mirrors, washroom scene, and that he did these to make Valeri's excellent movie less good...
Lots of interesting stuff although it may be a few years before i watch the genius again, but still the same price as if you bought the uk genius by itself, i'm very happy with the set

I've been slow in replying but i just wanted to let everyone know what i great buying experience it was with jpc.de Afro
I bought the nobody 4 dvd set, the german 2 disc few dollars more and the 2 disc nobody for the father in law and.
They have english speaking customer service (email), they deduct taxes for overseas orders, flat rate shipping of 10 euros to canada AND the package arrived in 3 business days!!
The nobody 2 disc set is brilliant quality with great extras / interviews and i think the few dollars more north american sets are copies of the german releases.
Very happy!
ps no i don't work for / own jpc.....

Thanks for the reviews, aside from a poster on the wall behind nero in his keoma dvd interview, i hadn't heard anything about this movie, even on the new fangled 'internet'. does castellari mention it in the commentary track to keoma? (i haven't listened to it yet)
I really enjoyed nero in keoma and companeros so am going to get the franco cleef restoration of this.
BTW Django seems to be an acquired taste, while i love other corbucci's, navaho joe, hellbenders, companeros, i can't get into django -i'll blame the dub
