1  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In The West / Gabriele Ferzetti / Antonioni on: February 18, 2003, 01:08:26 AM
Gabriele Ferzetti, who plays Morton, is also at the center of another one of the greatest films of all time, Antonioni's "L'Avventura."

I definitely see a huge influence on Leone from Antonioni, by the way.  Particularly in their love of close-up compositions, placing one person on one side of the widescreen frame and then surprising you when another person suddenly enters the frame from the other side.

This happens startlingly in "L'Avventura," and is one of the things I also love about "Once Upon a Time in the West."

While I don't know if Leone ever expressed any influence from Antonioni, his visual language was considered very revolutionary at the time and was much discussed in film circles worldwide.

Leone's first film is available in widescreen on DVD and can be found from various websites like Luminous Video   The only thing is, it's not subtitled and you'd need an all-systems DVD player to watch it.

"Once Upon a Time in the West" is available on widescreen DVDs in Italy in two versions, one with a new Dolby 5.1 remix.  A friend of mine found one of them on the web.  It's in Italian of course and you'd need an all-sytems player to watch it.

It's also on the big Leone box set that has the Eastwood westerns, an opera and some extra material, like interviews.  All unsubtitled of course.

The film is also available widescreen on PAL VHS from

If anyone would be willing to share their copy of the laser disk for a few days, I would be very grateful.  Please write me at  I recently borrowed a copy but it turned out to be warped.

I recently heard a rumor from a friend at Premiere magazine that the film will come out on DVD, but I'll believe it when I see it.
