I don't know what you are exactly saying: i don't i don't know what does monco means in english. Here is what i know about the man with no name's name Smiley :

Eastwood's name in french is : "le manchot", which means somebody with only one hand (may be it is the same with "monco" in english, i've no idea).

At the begining of the movie, he keeps one arm hidden under his poncho (and like that he can surprise some guys and kill them in drawing with the hidden hand).

For me:
1: once upon a time in america
2: once upon a time in the west
3: the good, the bad and the ugly
4: fistful of dynamite
5: my name is nobody (almost leone)
6: for a few dollars more
7: a fistful of dollars
5075  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In America / Re:Sergio Leone opus and french serious critic on: March 31, 2003, 08:26:39 AM
The notion (Huh) of "genius" is very personnal... my genius are not the same as yours...

I'm agree for "a fistful of dollars", but "fistful of dynamite" is in my top 20 (but under ouatia, ouatitw and gbu).

SHorty, i hope you are wrong, i hope that genius can exist in france... i would like to be a genius Smiley

5079  General Information / General Discussion / Introduction scenes on: March 29, 2003, 04:51:56 PM
I think that one of the most important qualities of Leone is his introdution scenes (can i say that in english???).
If you forget the final duels, what do you really remember in leone's movies?

in GBU: the first part (until that "the good" is written on the screen) is the beest (on my mind).

in ouatw: the first scene is great great great... and after that the introduction of frank (for me the most beautiful introduction of a character ever made), and the one of jill and the one of the cheyenne...
in fistful of dynamite: when john appears...

in for a few dollars more: monco's apparition.

When you ask somebody to explain you ouatw, usually, the guy answer  "that was great, but i can't remember exactly... i recall three men in dusters, at the station, with a bog..."

I think that there is (for me) just one genius who did movies all over the world: it is sergio (may be orson wells...)
I think there is just one genius who did music: it is ennio.

For "le pacte des loups", you're right, it's an awful movie (if you call that a movie), but i think the director was trying yo imitate bad american movies.
For asterix, you're right, it is also bad.

I have never said there IS genius in france, i think there WERE.
Truffaut is an other kind of cinema that leone or scorsese. He did great great movies, and also other movies who were boring.
He isn't the only guy in france who did so great movies.

You (and i too) have a sensibility who makes you feel pictures and sounds. That's great. I am also open to other ideas of cinema. What is fabulous with leone, this is that he had all: pictures sensibility, sounds sensibility, script sensibility, time sensibility, music sensibility...
That's why he was for me THE genius.

I'm not a cultured man, but i can say that Maupassant was a genius (he was a writer).

And for the music... i think that YOU can't like the french (recent) music. All those guys (goldman, souchon, cabrel, sanson...) can't do what YOU may call music. They are more in texts that in the music, you know.

In fact, there isn't realy a lot of genius. I love cinema, i love scorsese, coppola, sometimes de palma, sometimes spielberg....
But no one of them is a genius.

FOr the conclusion, i think that we are in fact agree, but you think that cinema is pictures and sounds (for you, a good script isn't necessary, but it is only a good point), music (i think, because you didn't say anything) is really music and harmony, not texts, and books are for the texts.
This is your opinion (or i didn't understood anything Smiley ).
5081  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In America / Re:just saw OUATIA for the first time, i got QUESTIONS!!!! on: March 27, 2003, 11:05:42 AM
well, what did you really understand in this movie??? Smiley
My english isn't perfect, but i'll try to explain.

Max made all he could to make noodles betray (?) him.
Max had some pact with the police.
Max and the police killed the 2 other friends. (and noodles think it is his own fault)
Max tried to kill noodles too.
Max stole the money (that was why he killed the others).
Max was the real betrayer (?).

Max became a senator with this money.
Max did perhaps jump in the truck. According to Leone, the important point is that A MAN jumped in the garbage truck, and that FOR NOODLES, it is max. it is symbolic.

The lady (deborah, played by elisabeth mc govern) didn't change for a reason that i can't explain with my poor english, but i'm gonna trie: for a lot of reasons:
First, she is maked off (?), and we don't know her real face at this point of the story.
Second, in this scene, there is the old noodles, the young max (in fact, his son, or noodles "ghost" son), and the adult deborah: the three times of the movies are in this scene.

For the matter with joe pesci, i can't exactly remember what happened: it is my favorite movie, but i've seen it only 2 times (220 minutes version).

I hoppe it's a bit more clear for you.

ok, if you think you've got enough informations to have your own opinion, you're right.

Thanks for the english Smiley
5083  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In America / Re:Sergio Leone opus and french serious critic on: March 26, 2003, 12:52:33 PM
i'm agree with some points, i disagree with other points Smiley

First, yes, the majort part of the french are very proud of the "exeption culturelle franšaise"... which doesn't really exist, of course. But remember that those guys also love "lethal weapon ": they're just kind of silly men. There is more silly people than intelligent people in france, like everywhere in the world.

Second (do you sau that???), in france, cinema hasn't as much money than in usa... so french movies can't be action movies, they can't be Apocalypse now, they can't be fistful of dynamite...

But...
But...
Did you see "un air de famille"? THIS is a masterpiece.
Did you see "le gout des autres"? THIS is a very good movie.
...

But...
But...
Do you know Pialat? He's one of the directors of the french "nouvelle vague", and that guy did only very very intellectuals movies. And he says that he did it because he hadn't money to do other movies!

Third (and last), a lot of american dircetors are produced in france. For exemple: David Lynch.

Ok.

5085  Films of Sergio Leone / Duck, You Sucker / FoD, underrated? on: March 26, 2003, 12:31:39 PM
I just would like to say that this movie is often considered as leone's weakest movie... I can't agree: it's a beautiful movie, one of the best movies that i know. It isn't as good as the two once upon a time, but it is still better than a fistful of dollars and for a few dollars more... I think it is the same level as gbu.

Unfortunatly, james coburn and rod steiger both died last year... R.I.P
