Hey DJ... my bad but there is a second, better “Phantom” thread. Of course I had to make 2

I saw an advanced screening. It was of course excellent. Compared to the rest of PTA's filmography, it's a minor work in scope ... very much just based in one house. It's much lighter in tone than the trailer suggests, and with many Hitchcock-esque moments. DDL is great, Vicky Krieps outdoes him. It's a slow start but the movie turns quite fun in a weird way, and like The Master, lots going on thematically. TONS and TONS of Greenwood's score which is his best yet. It feels like a fully scored silent film at times. Beautifully shot with an uncredited cinematographer. I will be buying the 4K UHD blu and watching it many many times... no question.

Because I love lists, here is a list. You'll notice many 10's. Keep in mind that probably more than half of the movies I would give a "10" to at all are between PTA and Leone.

1. The Master - 10
2. Boogie Nights - 10
3. Magnolia - 10
4. There Will Be Blood - 10
5. Punch-Drunk Love - 9
6. Phantom Thread - 8
7. Hard Eight - 7.5
8. Inherent Vice - 7
9. Junun - 6

Thank you, my friend!
Mikey! gimme your thoughts on Song to Song.

Nice signature photo. Can you make it a little narrower? It’s stretching out the page. Thanks  Smiley
Fuck you drink, how dare you request to compromise Leone's framing??

Phantom Thread (2017) - 8/10
PT Anderson strikes again. I think most people including myself will like this more than Inherent Vice.

Horace and Pete = his final masterpiece?

Written, Directed, and Shot by Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring Daniel Day-Lewis
Original Score by Johnny Greenwood

December 25th

Set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Leslie Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.

And you deserve to die.

So, what about that HBO Spielberg documentary? Do you learn anything about filmmaking in it? I've heard some great reviews but it's hard to put your hand on it in France.

a bit here and there but it’s mainly a Spielberg praise piece. A very thoughtful and entertaining one though.

You suck.
its not that it was too slow it’s just that the characters felt so dead. I don’t really like the original that much either though. Both are all right.

Blade Runner - 6
Blade Runner 2049 - 6
Spielberg - 8
Young Frankenstein - 3
Little Sister - 4

but it's not better executed than Scott Pilgrim

I agree with Novecentk. Very good film. Caught it in 70mm IMAX. I did find it very jarring when it switches between IMAX and regular 70mm though. There are very few scenes not in IMAX, I wonder why the whole thing isn't in that format.

8.5/10 finally a war film that avoids overdoing sentimentality

I know a few of us here dabble in / have careers in video and film work ( n_l, mike siege, me, others?).  So I figure we could have a general thread to group all the self-promotion into one lump. I'll start.

Here's some stuff I've done in the past year that I like

This music video for one of my favorite bands. I edited and co-produced. they're pretty much unknown but the new album has gotten solid praise from Rolling Stone as one of the best of the year so far. Obama likes them too. Most of the views are on the Facebook upload, so here's the YouTube one. It was released this week

Same as above, edited and co-produced. This is my hometown friend. It's unreleased, in distribution limbo. No new album planned, so no release strategy.

'Dare to Be Remarkable', documentary I posted about before, but in full form. also in limbo other than a few screenings throughout the year - a tough sell for obvious reasons. Edited this as well
