136  General Information / General Discussion / Re: Leone, Auteur? on: June 16, 2007, 12:15:58 PM
The scene where Frank kills little Timmy is one of the greatest moments in bad guy cinema, i mean who can kill a child?
That's a good example of very operatic dramatic moment. The timing of Timmy running to the door after hearing the gunshots with the music crashing in as Frank's group gather around~brilliant!

Is Sergio an Auteur?...

Absolutely!

Of course Morricone has a huge role to play in this.
Leone's style has even been mimicked by many television commercials, and it is easy to recognise
Leone's films are the quintessential spaghetti westerns, with style coming out the wazoo.

A few of Sergio Leone's trademarks...

Camera shots from the hips and boots
Drawn out duels for a Morricone musical treat (also for tension)
Super close ups of the characters eyes
Odd characters for the supporting roles
The dialog
The dirt~finally westerns where you can see the dirt.
The overly dramatic gunshots
and many more i can't think of right now.

IMO~Leone's westerns are like great opera~great music and larger than life characters where the truly evil get it in the end.

Thanks for the welcome Noodles and Marmota!

IMO (although nobody asked)~ OUATITW is Leone's best film, but i have a strong nostalgia connection to FAFDM

Hello all, I've posted already but just discovered this thread. I've been a huge Leone fan most my life~at first watching them with my dad  a l o n g  time ago as a child~my dad has been dead for some 30 years now and everytime i pull out my Leone films for summer viewing, i think of him.
142  Films of Sergio Leone / A Fistful of Dollars / Re: Fistful of Dollars or Yojimbo? on: June 13, 2007, 07:13:40 PM
Definatetly  FOD

It comes down to visual style for me. While i enjoy SW, in particular Leone films, i don't like samuri films.
I'm not saying FOD is a better film~i just prefer it.
143  General Information / Sergio Leone News / Re: LEONE ANTHOLOGY 8 DISC SET also separately on: June 12, 2007, 03:20:12 PM
I thought that the box set was poorly designed, so i bought FOD,FaFDM and DYS separately for $15.00 apiece, seeing how TGTBaTU is the same, why bother?
144  General Information / Sergio Leone News / Re: R1 Leone SE's to be released in June on: June 10, 2007, 08:00:51 PM
Unfortunately DVDBeaver doesn't compare the German releases of FOD and FAFDM.

AS far as the picture quality, of the German release, being better than the R1...i'm going by the post by Sundance on page 3 of this thread~it's the first post on page 3. You can see that the Geman release isn't as blue as the other.
146  General Information / Sergio Leone News / Re: R1 Leone SE's to be released in June on: June 10, 2007, 11:43:09 AM
Hello Eric;

The UK R2 dvds have no mono soundtrack, but i thought the German dvds have the original mono soundtrack.
If the picture quality of the German disc are better than the UK discs(therefor better than the R1 discs) I can forgive the Pal speedup.
147  General Information / Sergio Leone News / Re: R1 Leone SE's to be released in June on: June 10, 2007, 12:41:46 AM
Hello Everyone! Newbie here,

I've been a huge fan of Sergio Leone films since i was a  small child watching them on tv with my dad.
I only films i collected  were Leone films when we had a VCR, and when DVD players came out, i bought my first one only when Leone films were released on DVD. Living in Canada i bought my first non-region DVD player to pick up the UK SE versions, not realising that there was no original mono tracks Angry
So, with the new R1 being the same as the R2UK discs but with the original mono tracks restored. The picture quality of the R1s still won't be as good as the German releases~~Is this right? The comparison shots earlier in this thread shows the R2UK to be very blueish against the German release.
