The only question is: Unless Frank knew who Harmonica was (or at least had some idea of his abilities), why did he send three guys? Surely one skilled gunman would be theoretically enough to deal with a nobody.

Well, Groggy, it's very simple (as said Mr. Morton to Frank's principal liuetenant during their poker game with $100 banknotes).
Wobbles told Frank that someone who is looking for Frank is very dangerous guy.
We know exactly that Harmonica sent (to Frank) his invitation  for the rendevouz through Woobles. Wobbles was Frank's "blinkers and flaps" and - I'm sure - Wobbles let know to Frank that Harmonica is very dangerous exemplar.

Hi, guys!
Thanks for your warm words about my blog.
Dave Jenkins!
Special thanks for your very interesting response to my topic.
And yes I fractionally agree with you.
I think Snaky, Stony and Knuckles probably were very special fighters of Franks gang. Something like combatants for extremely hard missions.
It seems to me they werent involved in regular actions. Probably Snaky was Franks old friend and sometimes he (and his henchmen) fulfilled Franks exclusive orders.
But I cant accept your following argument: nobody missed of them when they were killed".
Well we are talking about dreadful killers. I cant imagine that Frank makes himself slobber after his henchmen became deadmen.
Frank has killed Dave Jenkins, Calder Benson, Jim Cooper, Chuck Youngblood and hundreds and hundreds another persons. He wasnt maudlin man and he didnt miss his dead banders.
Here you are. Smiley

Hi, Jill!
Yeah! I agee - horrible snoots!
By the way I've changed design of blog's layout. I think it became "much more powerful" (as Frank said when he had been asked: "How does it feel sitting behind that desk, Frank?"
To my opinion Frank's style (taste) lived through evolution.  Grin Look at faces his old gang's gunmen. They are natural monsters!  Embarrassed
But his belated henchmen were very pleasant guys.   Wink
7  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In The West / Michael Harvey - 100% on: October 02, 2008, 07:09:42 AM
Dear il brutto!
Yes, Michael Harvey played the principal Frank's lieutenant. Without any doubts.
The reasons are:
1. First - Mickey Knox, who wrote all dialogues to the OUATITW, told about it. He invited Michael Harvey to OUATITW. Mickey Knox has suggested to Leone to use Michael Harvey as Frank's principal lieutenent. The stunman and translator Benito Stefanelli was invited for role of another lieutenant.
2. Second - I saw Michael Harvey in another westerns of Sergio Leone. I have a lot various photos of Michael Harvey and I know 100% that it was him. Not Antonio Casas. I agree with you that there is a formal resemblance, but... you are wrong - 100%.
3. Third - there is no Antonio Casas in cast credits of OUATITW.

10  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In The West / There is no Antonio Casas on: October 01, 2008, 09:27:07 AM
Dear Il Bruto!
Thanks for efforts to help!
But I am sure you're wrong. There were four poker players (without Mr. Morton). Two of them are Frank's lieutenants (actors Michael Harvey and Benito Stefanelli, stuntman and unofficial translator of Sergio Leone for english speaking actors). The third one is italian actor Aldo Berti.
I am sure that unidentified player with blonde (or grey) hair is not Antonio Casas.
Now I see his photo (I mean Antonio Casas). That's not him! 100%. Without any doubts. I think you mixed-up Antonio Casas and Michael Harvey.
