Not from you?

I'm surprised that MGM gives GBU away. But the 2nd disc seems to be the MGM version, with all the MGM bonus, and with the cave scene.

Now what I really want is a 2 disc Blu from OUTW. Theatrical version and this long Italian version. (and with a Norwegian dub with Greek subs)

Not from us. Unless they swiped the 720p video on Jordan Krug's blog without asking. We'll know the answer when this is released.

I heard as early as Dec 2015 that KL had the rights for GBU. I didn't believe it at the time but this proves it.

What a pleasant surprise. Curious which source they used for the "skeleton shot' footage.

But I did see GBU years later and there was an intermission just after Tuco cuts the chains and jumps on the train.

Interesting. I didn't know that the International Cut was presented with an intermission.

The Italian cut had the intermission during the monastery scene right after Blondie throws coffee in Tuco's face and says, " I'll sleep better...knowing that my worst enemy...is by my side...to protect me", and then passes out.

Of course, but there's not much of a difference, and at the moment it's the only one available. And it was a basic information which did not need to go too much into the details.

Understood, and I agree with you. There are no major differences in terms of full scenes being deleted for the Italian home release version. However, the original theatrical version included the full Tuco torture scene, not the abbreviated version as found on all home releases in Italy. Also, we know the desert scene was longer in that it included the "skeleton shot".

Italian version as released in Italy on DVD and Blu: 174 min

But the "Italian version as released in Italy on DVD and Blu" that you refer to is NOT the original Italian theatrical version as we've discovered from Italian 35mm elements (circa 1966) that have surfaced over the past couple years. This revelation was unveiled in another thread last year.

The extended version is the only option available on BD.

Extended version gets 9/10 while the 161 min version gets 10/10. Heck, I'll pretend I'm Spinal Tap and give it 11/10. Screw it, I'm giving it 100/10.

What's wrong with Wallach's voice?

That's right at the reel change, the kills are at the very end of reel 1. This often happens to the end of reels, they take the most abuse. Even the 98 DVD is missing a holstering shot in that exact section even though it was originally a part of the u.s cut.

This man has your answer.

I have it stuck in my head that GBU premiered in December 1967. IMDB reports a US release date of Friday, December 29, 1967. I know that IMDB info can be erroneous but Roger Ebert's initial review came to mind and that was published on January 2, 1968. I'm sure there are more reviews from the late 60's that should be able to verify this. One of which is New York Times reviewer Renata Adler's scathing review that was published in January 1968. So a late 67/early 68 release seems about right.

That's actually a good idea. It didn't occur to us. The problem is...how??

My pleasure.

DJ, do the caps of the 35mm scan take you back to The NewBev?

I thought the folks here would be interested in seeing screencaps comparing the MGM 4K BD vs. 35MM dye transfer print scan.

Glad to know intellectuals still find the Italian Western genre worthy of analysis and discussion after all these years.
