has to be the end scene as de niro takes the puff in the den then slowly lies onto his back and smiles.

greatest de niro film (except OUATIA obviously)...The Deer Hunter.

Greatest de niro performance...Taxi Driver.
483  General Information / General Discussion / Re:Spaghetti Western POLL on: February 03, 2004, 03:25:28 AM
only discovered leone this time last year but ive seen all of his films - except colossus of rhodes.

Apart from leone ive seen el condor (which is absolute shite) and captain apache (which is almost as bad). Which makes my screenname rather ironic as it suggests ive seen Django.
I really want to see Django, The Great Silence, the Big gundown and the trinity films but unless i have the dough to splash out on newly-released dvds or purchase film four there aint much hope!! Angry
484  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In The West / Re:Cheyenne the half-breed on: January 28, 2004, 04:58:05 PM
frayling suggests that cheyenne is actually manuel gutierrez. so his father looks to be mexican but as the 'half-breed' it suggests his mother would be indian. however would she have been 'the biggest whore in alameda'? Maybe.

OUATIA but hard to pick between OUATIA and OUATIW. In terms of great artistic brilliance these two are head and shoulders above Leone's others. In purely entertainment terms GBU is the best and you have to be patient when watching the once upon a times. But aesthetically, stylistically, musically and emotionally Once Upon a Time in America gets my vote as a hugely affecting work of art that manages to steer away from the hollywood melodramatics of that Leone taboo, the godfather. In my mind OUATIA is better. A wonderful 227 minutes of cinema. And the music? Leone has such a debt to Morricone. Shocked

ok so GBU is perfectly paced.
But no flashbacks! Leone's use of flashbacks is better here than in FAFDM and OUATIA. The end shootout where Harmonica flashes back to himself as a young boy being tortured is my favourite moment in cinema and McBain massacre is up there too.
I think it's the greatest film of all time (with the possible exception of Seven Samurai or Citizen Kane) and certainly better than The Wild Bunch!!
487  Films of Sergio Leone / The Good, The Bad and The Ugly / Re:Has anyone got the lyric of "The Story of a Soldier"? on: December 09, 2003, 06:23:20 AM
Hi
Djimbo here

I found the lyrics on John Nudge's page
Here they are: (there are the lyrics to the original song and as actually sung in the film)

The Story of a Soldier
from the film The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
music by Ennio Morricone
lyrics by Tommy Connor

Bugles are calling
from prairie to shore,
"Sign up" and "Fall in"
and march off to war.
Drums beating loudly,
Hearts beating proudly
Match Blue and Grey
And smile as you say Goodbye.
Smoke hides the valleys
And fire paints the plains.
Loud roar the cannons
'Til ruin remains:
Blue grass and cotton
Burnt and forgotten
All hope seems gone
So soldier march on to die.
There in the distance
A flag I can see,
Scorched and in ribbons
But whose can it be;
How ends the story,
Whose is the glory,
Ask if we dare
Our comrades out there who sleep.

Lyrics to The Story of A Soldier as sung in the film

Bugles are calling from prairie to shore,
"Sign up" and "Fall In" and march off to war.
Blue grass and cotton, burnt and forgotten
All hope seems gone so soldier march on to die.
Bugles are calling from prairie to shore,
"Sign up" and "Fall In" and march off to war.
There in the distance a flag I can see,
Scorched and in ribbons but whose can it be,
How ends the story, whose is the glory
Ask if we dare, our comrades out there who sleep.

(Thanks to Michael Caletka and Addie Smith)
