31  Other/Miscellaneous / Off-Topic Discussion / ROD STEIGER on: July 15, 2005, 05:40:00 PM
Just watched a forgotten British classic starring ROD STEIGER called ACROSS THE BRIDGE (1957). This is ROD without the later over-the-top performance (s) that he became famous for! Stunning movie from a GRAHAM GREENE story. Rent it, buy it, borrow it, steal it! Once viewed.....never forgotten (imo).

but I am wondering if there are any French and German movies and directors that I would like if I'm into Italian fellows like Leone and Bertolucci?

As a start in terms of GERMAN film, do check out FRITZ LANG'S "M". Peter Lorre plays a character that puts LECTER in the Disney league! This is a masterpiece. You won't be disappointed!

Essential french viewing must include Jean Vigo's L'ATALANTE (1933). Beautiful and haunting with an understanding of cinema that most modern directors can only dream of!

If anything influenced this, it was probabaly the slow motion death in the duel near the start of THE SEVEN SAMURAI, which brings us neatly to the one film-maker who undoubtedly did influence Leone, Akira Kurasawa.
Was Kurosawa influenced by PUDOVKIN ? Check out his slo-mo work in the stunning DESERTER (1933).

JOHN FRANKENHEIMER and ERICH VON STROHEIM, from what I've read were two tough SOB'S!

Thanks Gramps,
I'll check it out Grin

He is the King of Cool Cool Cool Cool
He was indeed the KING OF COOL. Check out, if you havn't seen them already, THE REIVERS (69), a different role for McQueen but a terrific performance; and also in HELL IS FOR HEROES (62), a neglected war movie that (imo) ranks with the best! A fine actor, much missed. Nobody on the screen today can match him (imo).

UK tv showed HOMBRE as an early evening treat today. Years since I've seen it but was glued to the screen. NEWMAN wonderful but BOONE superb beyond words. A classic western.
