The Good, The Bad and The Ugly / Re: IMDB.com still shot« on: January 05, 2005, 12:02:21 PM »
That is a still from the deleted Socorro sequence. There is a reconstruction of this scene on the restored GBU DVD.

I knew I read something about the gunshots in Chris Frayling''s book, and after a few minutes of skimming I found it:
Quote from: Sergio Donati Sergio enjoyed playing with the design of the sound. They had a lot of meetings to discuss it. He hated silence. For instance, the revolvers are in fact Winchesters, and the Winchesters are little cannons. They sent the sound man off to a valley near Rome, where there are no roads or distracting noises. Sergio sent the man, who came back with "ping-pong-pung", ricochets and echoes. It wasn''t electronic. It was recorded in a natural setting, because he wanted air and atmosphere I wonder if those sound restoration folks knew that when they replaced the best sounding gunshots ever. Just to make it sound technically good on their fancy 5.1 system. I''ve never seen so many gunshots wasted so badly... :''( 34

Well, there''s Harry Grey''s Hoods which I think was later reissued as Once Upon a Time in America. Donno if that''s what you were looking for though.

I hope not... The new gunshots in GBU was the worst thing about the whole restoration IMO.

Once Upon A Time In The West / Re: DVD Wooden Box Set w/ Harmonica« on: January 04, 2005, 08:43:17 AM »
Yea, I figured it had to be #27 873 and not #07 873K (if they made 2 x 20K series as you mentioned.) I got it not long ago as well, so it can''t be that old. That GBU box sure looks sweet. With the english title and not "Zwei glorreiche Halunken" printed on it one would believe it was intended for release in uk/us as well. Good thing I''m still young...

I''''ll need to find the cd first, though. So it might take a while... Ok, great. ![]() ![]() 40

Oh, that''s always a hard question. :- I only have "Takeoff: Film Hits" and "Filmmusic 1966-1987" myself, but if I could choose again today I''d probably go with "Movie Masterpieces". It has a lot of essential music on it. But it all depends on what price you are able to find it at too.

Probably the GDM 2038. I have that one inluded in a 31 track version. The quality of the extra tracks is awful and they contain all the sounds from the movie, so they are probably ripped right off the DVD.

Other Films / Re: The Great Silence aka Il grande silenzio (1968)« on: January 01, 2005, 11:46:28 AM »
On my DVD the text is in Italian and the translation is as follows:
The massacre of 1898, the year of the Great Cold, raised the public condemnation of the bounty hunters who, in a climate of false legality, made violence a way of life. An inscription was legible for years in Snow Hill, the area of the massacre: MAN MAY WALK OVER THIS PLACE FOR A THOUSAND YEARS BUT WILL NEVER WIPE OUT THE BLOOD OF THOSE WHO FELL. There is also an alternate "happy ending" on the DVD where the sheriff comes riding in. Together with Silence he saves all the prisoners held by Kinski and his gang. There''s a note saying: This "happy ending" was originally created for Asian and North African markets, where the producers felt audiences wouldn''t tolerate such a grim finale. No sound elements were available and there is some question as to whether any audio was ever created. 43

I just fricking hate small pictures, and I bet you do too! So, I took some pictures of my copy for you:
![]() Front ![]() Back ![]() Inside ![]() Inside ![]() Harmonica. It reads "Spiel mir das Lied vom Tod" on both sides, but has the copyright notice only on one of them. I haven’t watched the DVD but the content seems to be the same as on the english special edition. The soundtrack only has four tracks which can also be found on the 2004 release of the soundtrack. The tracks are: I. Once Upon A Time In The West (03:41) II. Farewell To Cheyenne (02:36) III. Man With A Harmonica (03:27) IV. Jill’s America (2:45) 44

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly / Re:Your favourite scene in this movie?« on: December 24, 2004, 02:45:01 AM »
I just remembered a good one; When Tuco and Blondie meets the union soldiers after leaving the monastery. I just love the look on Tuco's face when the union soldier brushes the dust from his uniform. And Blondies comment "God's not on our side cos he hates idiots also" just makes tuco even more of a fool. That's when you can almost hear Tuco's inner voice say "Fuuuuuuck!"
