3.30 AM over here, just got back from Budapest - my third and absolute best Morricone concert. I'll scan the programme tomorrow. I will just say this... he did the... MAN WITH THE HARMONICA. Yup. My jaw dropped to the floor when I've spotted it in the programme (more a book than a programme), it started the Leone segment, Il Forte from GBU followed, and then the usual Leone stuff. More tomorrow... in the meantime, I see someone uploaded it from the previous concert in Prague (where it made its live debut), too bad about the lousy audio (the fender guitar ROCKED in the Budapest Arena): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe5ovROt27Q

First review from Prague in; mentions "The last stage to Red Rock" and "Bestiality" being performed. "The red tent" and "The best offer" as well. Nice.

I'll be in Budapest on Sunday, so will report back, scan the programme, the usual.

Morricone wrote 50 minutes of the brand new, original material (it's all on the soundtrack CD); in the film there are also three "The thing" tracks not used in Carpenter's film and "Regan's theme" from Exorcist II.

Ennio's statement:

“When Quentin first asked me to write the score for his new western, I said no. But Mr. Tarantino is an astute man, and he left the screenplay for my wife Maria to read. He had spotted who is the boss in our house. Maria realized instantly what a brilliant screenplay Quentin had written for The Hateful Eight, and she told me in no uncertain terms that I had to do it. I am so happy that I did. To work with such a brilliant young director at my age gives me great pleasure. He was just one year old when I wrote my first score for Sergio Leone for A Fistful of Dollars. It is also a deep honour and very humbling to receive this prestigious award nomination for doing the profession I love. I receive it on behalf of myself, Quentin Tarantino, The Weinstein Company, and the whole cast and crew of this remarkable film. And of course I receive it on behalf of my clever wife Maria.”

I think there's a good chance of him attending the event; it's on Sunday the 28th, and look at this Drink:

"While Morricone did not attend the Golden Globes, he is expected to make the trek to Los Angeles to be feted by the 11th Los Angeles-Italia Film Fashion and Art Festival, the annual pre-Oscars event comprising movies and music and celebrating showbiz ties between Italy and Hollywood, which will run Feb. 21-27 at the Hollywood and Highland Center. Plans are also underway for him to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on that occasion."

"ENNIO MORRICONE & QUENTIN TARANTINO TOGETHER AT ABBEY ROAD FOR THE FIRST TIME TO LAUNCH THE HATEFUL EIGHT SOUNDTRACK

To mark the launch of Quentin Tarantino’s new film The Hateful Eight and its thrilling new score from Ennio Morricone, both artists met for a special event at Abbey Road Studios.

Tarantino and actors Kurt Russell and Walton Goggins watched as Morricone conducted the Czech National Symphony Orchestra in a live recording of music from The Hateful Eight, cut to vinyl. As a gift to fans, those who pre-order the album will be given the chance to receive one of these hand-stamped, direct-to-vinyl editions through www.thehatefuleightsoundtrack.com (while supplies last).

While they were at Abbey Road, Morricone, Tarantino, Russell, Goggins and the orchestra signed the famous wall outside Abbey Road, which had been covered in The Hateful Eight artwork.

Just hours later, Morricone’s score for The Hateful Eight was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Original Score category."
