Pretty certain that the first watch is a 1930's Art Deco Rotary watch - they were very popular in the 1930's especially in the UK
I'll have a look at the 1960's watch and report back - also in case your interested the lighter De Niro uses to light Max's cigar is a Dunhill😉👍

INTERESTING! How do you know that's Dunhill?

Chris, can you also post some photos of the watch Noodles wears during Deborah dinner?
I really think it's black strap/silver dial, ordinary numerals..

Just give me instructions about that, please. I'll use my money and, if you can, your expertise.

1. Do you agree JLC Reverso (i'm buying it in 1 week) is the closest watch to Noodles' one?

2. Then, maybe you can zoom ti better to see more clearly.. is it brown strap with gold dial or black strap with silver dial? Can't say it, isn't it black/silver at Deborah date and brown/gold throughout the rest of the movie (opium den/ratting/beginning/etc.)?
8  General Information / General Discussion / Re: Gabutti's "C'era una volta in America" on: February 27, 2016, 03:38:44 AM
1. Really?? What's your idea of his looks? Old De Niro (1968 Fat Moe's scene)? Young De Niro? E. G. Robinson? De Niro and Robinson mixed together?  Grin

2. I thought Max was the real name... isn'it?

3. What family members photos do we have? Only 3 black and white Hyman pics in his late years?

*It's not sure two brothers look like, then i think if Leone depicted old Goldberg bald he was probably like that (base on their first meeting, just like Fat Moe's speakeasy).

4. Do you have an idea of what's the cafe (near Calvary Cemetery, Queens) Leone and Harry met?

11  Films of Sergio Leone / Once Upon A Time In America / Re: Noodles' watch on: February 25, 2016, 10:34:30 AM
Or maybe is it more like JLC Reverso?

Don't know, i'm sure Chris is the right man for that.. Chris please one last stand!

Please guys give me your opinion.. who should i contact for (hopefully) receiving Harry Grey's photo?
I doubt he was host in the BBC Roaring Twenties and Thirties show.. come on, maybe Simeon was wrong, or he was deliberately tongue in cheek... then i would definitely not consider BBC..
maybe Frayling.. but how the fuck can i contact him?

I suppose Leone did write a note saying that Time was one of the essential elements of the film but all the Cartier Tank Louis watches I've seen have the name Cartier shown prominently, Roman numerals, and a fancy border between the numerals and the centre of the dial.

e.g.

Noodles 1933 watch

Has a square dial, ordinary numerals, no obvious brand name, a rather bland face and a small second hand area.

Noodles 1968 watch

A round dial and no obviously visible brand name

Great, btw what's the brand in your opinion?
Clearly not Cartier, but isn't Tank Louis very similar to Noodles' one (except for the ordinary numerals)?

Then, can you see if the dial's gold or silver, and the strap black or brown?

One last thing: could you please post the other Noodles' watch (Detroit shootout scene)?
That seems  gold dial and black leather strap (with yellow display too)... is it correct?

Thanks Chris

We have no evidence.
Please track 1945 and even 1950 census to find if Goldberg became Grey... or even 60s or 70s, censuses aren't stopped at 40s.

Then, i don't think his wife lied to Leone, so what about Maxie? He's been in jail with him (reading Gabutti), then he's been arrested in the 70s after a failed bank shot and broadcast in TV , and jailed at San Quentin.. maybe some database could show him.. or maybe Max wasn't his real name.. could you try to search for him?

*Curiosity: we accepted, according to Palm Spring Star promoted by his son Simeon, that his name was Herschel Golberg and was born in Kiev (not Odessa), anyway i read the dedication written by Simeon and it says "Heschel Goldberg" (2nd page); maybe it was mistranslated, or maybe his real name was actually Heschel and not Herschel as we have established...

Anyway, our last thing to discover will be (as ever) his photo: first clue, he was bald in his 70s  Grin  Grin
